Review

"In her delightful style, Lois Tverberg engagingly leads us across cultures to begin to envision a different worldview, a worldview more consistent with the world of most of Scripture. In so doing, she brings alive texts of Scripture from the inside." -- Craig S. Keener, Professor of Biblical Studies, Asbury Theological Seminary; Co-author of the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible"Lois is a superb teacher, using story and gentle humor to great effect. I devoured this fascinating book. Highly recommended!" -- Lynn Austin, Author of Where We Belong"Lois Tverberg has written still another classic. For those who want to know what it was like to be one of Jesus' inner circle of disciples and sit down with him to study Scripture, Tverberg's new book is the place to start." -- David N. Bivin, Founder and Editor of Jerusalem Perspective"Thanks to the good work of biblical scholars, the historical Jesus of Nazareth is once again situated in his divinely designed Second Temple period Jewish context. I'm recommending it to everyone I know." -- Todd Bolen, Professor of Biblical Studies, The Master's University

"The Bible is an Eastern book. We see it through the colored glasses of Western culture. Much is lost. We miss the subtleties of humor andmany of the underlying assumptions.... If you want to more clearly understand what Jesus meant when he taught His disciples, this book is a great place to start. (And follow it up with the other Rabbi Jesus books.) I could list any number of reasons I loved this book, but I’ll limit myself to only one.Chapter 5 is entitled “Greek Brain, Hebrew Brain” for a very good reason. Most of us in the western world think very “Greek-ly.” The world of the mind is at the forefront of our reasoning. Not so with the Hebrew. Theirs is one of concrete thought. Hence, faith isn’t something you think. It’s something you do! Love isn’t a feeling. It’s an action. Jesus said, “If you love me, you’ll keep my commandments” not, “If you love me, you’ll feel ooey-gooey inside during worship.” That distinction alone puts a whole new meaning on “Love your neighbor as yourself.” That’s the kind of distinction that changes me.I can’t say enough good things about this book and the others that Lois has written. Looking forward to the next one!

I have never been disappointed with any book from Lois Tverberg. I don't know how she does it. A relatively new believer could understand this book, but as a seasoned pastor who himself has authored two Jewish Roots book, I never fail to learn new bits of information or gain new perspectives from all of her books. And this one is no exception.Tverberg's insights into the difference between Western (Greek) thinking and Ancient Near Eastern (particularly Hebrew) thinking is excellent. If people ask me which is my favorite Tverberg book, my answer is "Whichever one I am reading."If you have interest in the Jewish Roots of Christianity -- whether a layman, pastor, or academic -- I think you will enjoy this clear but informative (and challenging) read.By the way, you do not need to read her books in sequence. Each books is self-contained, so jump in anywhere.

Lois’ books are eye-opening in the way she shares her biblical knowledge & wisdom from a Hebrew perspective. Her new book, in particular, explains the importance of reading the Bible from an eastern lens, as the Bible was written by & for an ancient eastern audience. This may seem insignificant, but as Lois explains in her newest book, it’s everything when reading, interpreting & applying biblical principles to our lives.I’ve read & enjoyed every book Lois has written, but I consider this her best, most significant book to date. When Christians separated from their Jewish roots, they lost so much. Greek, Westernized thinking became prevalent, yet its worldview is in stark contrast to how the biblical writers thought, wrote & lived. It’s to every modern Christian’s advantage to begin afresh with open eyes, ears & hearts to what our living bible speaks to us from ancient days ago, from its Mother Tongue. This book will light a new fire in hearts to begin a deeper, more exciting way to study the Bible. When I started studying from a Hebraic perspective, I started having fun studying the Bible! I felt like I walked through a new, exciting portal that led me to find new gems all the time. I hope “Reading the Bible with Rabbi Jesus” ignites the fire in many people around the world!

One of the best books I’ve read that helps us understand the Bible in its context and meaning. In our western world we miss so many nuances of the land and the people where the scripture is set. This book will help you to understand the culture, the people, and so much more. This could be the best book you read all year to grow in your knowledge, understanding and faith of God.

This final book in the series was an excellent book to end the study of the Jewish perspective on studying about Jesus and the culture of Israel.

The New Testament was originally written in the context of the Hebraic culture. As Christians, we can gain a great deal of insights to our beliefs from the Jewish perspective. Lois Tverbe has written an excellent book provides a valuable bridge between these two important cultures. We’re a lot more alike than we are different.

Lois has done it yet again. Great book full of very insightful knowledge to help us unlock the true context of the scriptures

Used this book for a women's Interdenominational Bible Study. We were amazed at how much we've missed as Gentiles. Very readable basic book was easy to follow. As study leader, it helped me to prepare each lesson in a logical way.
