This collection of Spawn issues 1 - 6 is perfect for any fan of Spawn who wants to relive those days in the nineties when Spawn was hugely popular. This is also the perfect way to introduce new readers to the creative world that Todd McFarlane introduced with all of it's creepy and evil moments with the victorious, testosterone driven heroic moments expected with Super hero comics, with some of the campiness thrown in as well.I will briefly touch on the best points of this collection and the worst, and let you judge on whether you agree that this is the perfect, most cost efficient way to dive back into the former flagship series of Image comics!+ The ArtworkWith Todd McFarlane, you either love or hate his style. One way I would describe him is creating focus through eccentricities in his scenery, from the large and fluttering cape which Spawn wears to the different color contrasts used. Generally, you could say that the artwork is mostly solid with vivid, yet wild, imagery which I personally consider a great example to showcase McFarlane's talents in bringing an unknown independently owned superhero into mainstream nerd popularity. Where everything is not 100% perfection, like how odd a child character Cyan looks, as her face and appendages seem sort of bloated. Small issues like this very seldomly occur, but the other 98% or so is completely awesome, given you appreciate McFarlane's style which clearly was influenced by comics he read or even worked on. So I would say this is a positive, while some will disagree.+ The StoryI detailed most of the general Spawn story in my review for the animated series, so I will generally say this: Spawn is a badass Superhero whom is someone whom made a deal with the Devil to return to Earth in exchange for his services as a Hellspawn, or harvester of souls for Hell's army. Through these underworldly themes, the story is not your traditional Superhero vs. Villain conflict, as Spawn conflicts with universal forces like Hell/Heaven, supreme beings, crime bosses, cronies, and so many other types. With these sorts, some of these issues even feel like suspense/horror driven, with Spawn even toppling a serial killer in issue 5 - "Justice" (As titled in book). It combines terror with mythic elements into the Superhero genre, and it is apparent why this comic took off like it did! Just Spawn himself, being a Hell bound being who yet uses his wicked powers for his sense of Justice is a familiar story, but with Spawn is done in such a unique and twisted way. Just be warned, if you like this as much as I did, you will want to get vol. 2 pretty shortly after to tie up more loose ends. It becomes addicting! JUST BE WARNED, THIS IS NOT A COMIC FOR CHILDREN!!+ PresentationI think this is one of the best graphic novel/trade paper back editions of this comic, and actually superior in quality to the originals. I have a first edition Spawn # 1, and compared to the copy in the Origins collection, it doesn't look as nice. (Mind you, this issue is in Very Fine-Near Mint condition.) This is not to say it looks awful, but the glossy pages the TPB uses is far superior in durability and is glossy rather than traditional comic stock. This is perfect when you actually want to keep originals in good condition (although Spawn #1 1st ed. is NOT a valuable comic), and it works well to give you a fairly lengthy read, for a comic (I can finish one in about a half an hour or so, but usually in 45 minutes with few breaks.). The cover, for a paperback, is appealing and actually looks pretty good sitting on a bookshelf!- PaceThis is really my only negative point here, and it is the pace of the action and story in these early Spawn issues. Granted, this is knit picking completely, and I generally see these as superb! But I could never shake the feeling that I just wanted to know more, and that these comics were some of the best at leaving you on the edge of your seat until the end of the issue, only to find that what you have been wanting to find out all along is in the next issue. This is not problematic until you finish issue 6. Without giving anything away, I will say it leaves you wanting more! And where this fits pace is where some pages are dedicated to ficticious news panel spreads or a page or so as imagery pertaining to what Spawn is thinking, while they leave some questions unanswered just to keep you going. I get that they need their cliff hangers to sell their next issues, but sometimes it just feels excessive in Spawn specifically. It is a small flaw to me, but others may find it really aggrivating.-- Overview --I think this is one of my comic series ever because Spawn, his identity's problems, and his willingness to keep his human sense of conscience, even being a cursed being, is so compelling. You can tell there are other superhero influences, but you can also see horror influences and even a strange sense of satiric comedy in it. It gets campy in parts, and feels a little lighter in tone than the HBO animated series that Spawn spawned, but I personally like it better. For one, it wasn't cancelled in middle of a huge story arc, and also because it shows Spawn as an evil being holding onto the remnants of his soul through those he still has in his new life, not just those he misses form his old like he mainly was in the show. The art is stunning and for about ten bucks, I say it is well worth it to catch up on Spawn, remember why he was so awesome, and/or to understand why this was what set Image off when they started in the early nineties.To me, considering the flaws others may see, I give it a 9/10. I personally think it is near perfect though, aside from my minor pacing gripes, which is why it is 5 stars above. One of the best hero origin stories and introductions ever!

Spawn is my favorite superhero, by far he is everything Batman wishes he could be and more. He's dark and brooding and he actually kills his enemies so there is no vicious circle of cat and mouse. This is a great read and it has McFarlane's original art. I love it!

The Mafia are sending a cyborg assassin, Overtkill, to take out whoever is killing their men. On wrong info, they decide that Spawn is the killer and send Overtkill in to finish him. Spawn has to escape after sustaining serious injuries, he decides to go back to his basic training as a soldier and use the skills he already has without draining his superpowers.He makes it to an armory and gears up for the next confrontation.The thing I really liked about this issue was the art work in the action scenes, the energy created in the panels was incredible. As a character I wasn't that keen on Overtkill but it was good to see that Spawn has decided to change strategies and use the knowledge he already has for his mission on earth, which to be honest still isn't really that clear.

This was a great introduction to Spawn, the hero from Hell. The book contains the first six issues of Spawn's comic book series. Not only was the story good, but the art was very vivid and cool to look at as well. Overall, if you're looking for a dark read, or if you're wanting to start reading Spawn, then this book is for you.

I read this series years ago when it was first published. Still is as good as I remember. I wish the movie was as good. I heard they are doing another movie and I hope it is better than the first and as good as the book.

spawn is great, I'm not going to leave a comment about it because that's a given. as for quality of these reprints 10/10 I have the orignals and I buy these to read and to have and to share. they are 15-20 in stores. cheaper here and got here within 48 hours or sooner. A1 quality.

Only Al (Spawn) finds out that five years have passed since he died and that his wife Wanda has remaried his best friend and they now have a child together (something Simmons could never do). Ouch. Life sucks. The Devil (Malebolgia) has screwed him bigtime! Enter The Violator, an entity and emissary of Malebolgia's, hiding his truly hideous demonic form behind the guise of a short, fat, disguting clown. Really weird.Spawn works on levels that Marvel and DC couldn't or wouldn't touch at the time. More adult in its themes. More skin. More violence. More vulgarity (without outright profanity). Issues illustrated and discussed in Spawn were darker and more relevant than anything that was going on in the big publishers comic collections. Corruption and greed, murder, rape and despair....What McFarlane did in the creation of Image and Spawn was giving the artists and writers back their pride and their rights to make a profit on their own creations and move away from the tired characters that Marvel had been toting around for decades. What he did with Spawn was create a anti-hero/vigilante Hellspawn kick-ass comic legend. Sure it got tired as it drug on, but the begining was fresh. Dark. Deep.Dig it.

Basil the Great was one of the three Cappadocians, Bishops and theologians who supported and advanced the doctrine of the Trinity, when it was under attack between the Council of Nicea and the Council of Chalcedon. Basil was a polished writer, having studied in Athens, with Gregory Nazianzus.The first thing which strikes one is the emphasis Basil places on the analysis of prepositions. Unlike English, French, and German, to my knowledge, preposition change their meaning depending on the case of their usage in the text. The same preposition "meta-" can mean "with, amid, or among" if the context is genitive, while it means "after or behind" if the context is accusitive (or as it appears as a prefix for such words as "metaphysics".) Basil suggests many writers get these subtlties of meaning a bit mixed up. As you read the Cappidocians and others of the period, they sound more and more like modern linguistic philosophers, making arguments on how the terms are used by pastors in the sanctuary.What is remarkable is the extent to which Basil and the other Cappadocians come so close to virtually quoting Plato, especially his "Myth of the Cave" in Book Seven of "The Republic." Basil's main argument is that as long as you assume the Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity, none of the way of speaking about it devalues its role in comparison to The Father and The Son. It is co-equal in importance to the other two. He cites his well-known metaphor that the Spirit is akin to the heat of a branding iron, a property of that rod, but not of its essence.Like his fellow Cappadocians, he spends much time on the connectin between the body and the soul, and how one can be saved when the other dies and decomposes. One of the most rewarding things about studying the Cappadocians is that you do not get the sense that the orthodox and the heretical divisions of Christianity were at one another's throats. That comes later. Here, it may not be unlike modern ELCA Lutherans arguing with Missouri synod members. Both sides were devout and largely shared the same scriptures.It is a great boon to have these little treatises from these giants of the fourth century, so we can determine easily the strains of fourth century theology.

I cannot compare this product to other translations however I think that almost any other translation would be better. There are many misspelled words leaving me to wonder if anyone even bothered to proof the text. It is quite apparent that the translators were not entirely proficient with the English language which makes reading this book a bit of a chore.This is an ebook that was printed by a website leading me to believe they probably just ripped the text off the internet somewhere and printed it out in book form.

If you are interested in reading Basil's thoughts on the Holy Spirit, this is the edition to get. It is a fresh translation with brief but helpful introduction. The text has many footnotes, indicating Scriptures cited or translational issues. I compared this with the older translation, and it is much better. The content of Basil's writing here concerns the controversies of his day, particularly the Arian controversy. So, much of the book discusses the various parts of speech used in relation to the Spirit: "though whom" "from whom" "with "and" etc. The reader needs to reconstruct the views of Basil's opponents from his refutation. Nevertheless, there are many eloquent passages in this, and the book itself is brief. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in the teachings of the Church Fathers.I'm impressed with this "Popular Patristics Series", too. It looks like it's an Eastern Orthodox effort, so they are re-translating the Fathers I happen to find interesting.

This is particularly amazing since St. Basil wrote over 1600 years ago.On the Holy Spirit is a survey of the scriptural passages (Old and New Testament) which explain and illustrate the nature of the Holy Spirit, that he is divine and co-equal to the Father and the Son. St. Basil wrote this before the Nicean Council, which was convened to discuss the relationship of the three Persons of the Trinity, so it is very scholarly. It is a good companion for those who would like to study the bible on these topics, but also for those who would like to have a thorough understanding of the arguments against the co-equal divinity of the Holy Spirit circulating at the time.I will read more from this translator because he does not inject his voice into the translation as far as I can determine.

As an American, High School English teacher I'm thrilled to read ways in which to encourage my students that success and satisfaction aren't always monetary, or status related. This book was refreshing to me in so many ways- as a teacher, as a Mother and now, as a friend- who will be purchasing a few more copies to share.

Appreciated the outsiders' perspective of the authors, one American, one British, covering many aspects of parenting from childbirth to teens sexual practices. One major difference, more implied than explicitly stated, between the Dutch and Americans raising of children is the government support given to families in the Netherlands. So, whether there is a transfer of practices possible in the US without similar support is questionable, my most important take aways that are transferable are the giving children freedom to roam the neighborhood, a sort of free range childhood, (there was one report in the major news that an American mom who was cited for letting her children play unattended in a neighborhood park) and the natural conversations about their sexuality throughout childhood so that sex among teens is informed and safe sex. One huge difference that is probably not transferable that I admired, having retired from public school teaching, is the delay of academic emphasis until after the primary grades and the de-emphasis on competition for the highest grades. Rather, the emphasis is on play and social interaction. Can't see Americans giving up on their kids being the smartest, but maybe we would have happier, less stressed kids. Food for thought for raising happy kids.

Fantastic book! Nice mix of personal anecdotes and cultural history backed up with cited research. The co-authors have children of different ages and do a great job of comparing the Dutch culture to their respective home countries (America and England). I'm currently reading "Bringing Up Bébé" and I don't enjoy it as much as I did "The Happiest Kids in the World".

I called this review “good enough” because one of my favorite takeaways was the idea of good enough parenting. This book was the cure for what my own neurotic, anxious, guilt ridden, sparenting in the US. The Dutch talk about “good enough” parenting and living. There isn’t s drive for perfection like there often is here.One of the criticism I keep seeing about this book is that it constantly compares Dutch parenting to that in the UK and US, but I felt the writers were upfront about that this is what this book is about.My only criticism is that I felt like sometimes Dutch parenting was painted with rose colored glasses while UK and US parenting could at times be a bit of straw man. That being said though, I still liked most of the general concepts in this book. They helped me relax and realize my kid is going to be okay. I don’t need to “do it all” for my kids as is often the American way. It helped me recognize it’s important to take care of myself and just let go of somethings.I do not agree with every piece of advice offered in this book. And some of the advice would be nearly impossible to follow outside of living in the Netherlands, but I loved the broad concepts of it.

BEST BOOK I have EVER read about parenting! As an American mom, we are blindly conditioned to do certain things within our parenting. This book made me realize there were things I naturally wanted to do in raising my child and knowing it is OKAY to do so!!!! Made me want to move to Holland!

As an American who has lived in the Netherlands, this book rings so true to my experiences. I often hear through friends and family in the US the incredible pressure to be the "perfect" parent, in big and subtle ways. At one point, my brother, in a moment of desperation, threw a parenting book out the window as it had completely stressed my sister-in-law into thinking she was "ruining" my nephew for life.That is the refreshing thing about The Happiest Kids in the World. The message is simple: relax. It's going to be okay. The book has such a friendly, warm tone and I found myself laughing along as I could relate to the culture shock of wait, they let kids do what? And they survive and thrive!? Amazing! The authors' personal anecdotes are all followed up by research and interviews with Dutch professionals and it feels very balanced, a bit like the Dutch parenting the book advocates.A common complaint for books like this is "Well, that won't work in the US." Yes, part of Dutch parenting happens due to the government--the way they prioritize maternity care and families in policies, the way schools are structured and how health services are available to all. But that only came about because it reflected the culture, the actual families living out their values. My experience in the Netherlands with children was that they weren't weird or exceptional specimens. They were normal kids who were allowed a really low-key beautiful childhood. They felt safe and loved. That's something that all of us, parents or not, can hope for and strive to create in our communities.If you want some entertaining, non-judgemental advice of how to get off the treadmill of perfectionist parenting or if you're just interested in getting a glimpse into Dutch culture, this is a fantastic start.

Great book for American parents to read about letting kids be kids and not pushing them to a state of anxiety. Also really highlights the differences on our cultures, which really developed over the last 60 years there, in education and parenting. A worthwhile read for any parent, and for educators and policy makers in education and child welfare and health programs.

The author definitely shows his passion for the topic, but unfortunately he also shows that being a fan doesn't make up for being a poor writer.Huge parts of eSports history are being completely ignored, with the European scene absent while the Asian scene is just being brushed over (with a focus on the few Americans as part of that scene), which means that the two largest eSports scenes in the world are barely represented. The long play-by-play descriptions of Dota 2 matches will bore you to death unless you're a big fan of the game itself, and many other games that should have been represented are also absent.A topic such as eSports history would have required a more thorough work of research, and a less biased look. Too bad !

I received this book from my son for a Mother's Day present. He is a player and a fan growing up playing games. I had not been very supportive for his gaming activity. He thought this book could help me understand. The book is well written with detailed descriptions of the people and the history. It took me back to those years when he was playing at home. Frankly, I was clueless on what was going on. My son is now an engineer at Twitch. This book allows me to find interesting topics to stay connected with him.

I'm a home cook, and I've been cooking sous-vide for almost 3 years now with an immersion circulator.When I first started cooking sous-vide, I purchased Thomas Keller's "Under Pressure", and was woefully disappointed with the recipes contained within. I started looking to the internet for resources on how to cook sous-vide, and what I found was a lot of discussion about what temperatures to cook certain ingredients at, but not full recipes.Fast forward to 2016, and I'm happy to say that Sous Vide at Home is truly a cookbook focusing on sous-vide with the home cook in mind. From addressing food safety concerns (regarding cooking temperatures, bacteria, and plastic bag safety) for beginners to introducing new recipes for the experienced, I found this book to be a wonderful resource of sous-vide cooking at home, and a must-have.I really appreciate that Fetterman takes the time to include instructions on a do-ahead strategy for most of the recipes in the book, so that one can sous-vide what is necessary ahead of time and then finish the dish afterwards.I think it's probably the first time where I've looked at a cookbook and felt like I wanted to cook every recipe in the book, and felt like I actually could, because the instructions are so clear, and it doesn't require a lot of fancy (or expensive) ingredients or equipment.One of the other wonderful things about this book is that she takes the time to include recipes from all parts of a meal -- not just appetizers, or entrees and dessert, but she even has a recipes for cocktails and sauces that you can prepare sous-vide.

This is a great sous vide cookbook, and the author's passion is obvious. It doesn't boast 300+ recipes, but is a well thought out introduction to all the possibilities of sous vide cooking - and exposes you to everything you can apply the technique to. The explanations ahead of each section are helpful and the book builds on the recipes so you can see why for those it makes sense to cook sous vide as opposed to standard methods, and I felt it gave me a good understanding of what sous vide makes sense to use for the most (very long time slow cooking or low-temperature cooking) and how to modify other standard recipes to take advantages of the method. The included recipes are not complicated (the beauty of sous vide itself is that it makes cooking most ingredients very straight forward) - the hardest parts of any of them will be the steps you need to do away from the sous vide part. The directions are very thorough and easy to follow and there is a lot of detail on how to do most of the work ahead of time. There is also good explanation as to why you use a certain temperature and how changing times and temperatures affects the cooking process. I have cooked a fair number of the proteins in the book, some of the veggies, eggs and also attempted the cocktails and desserts - and everything has come out excellent. While i like that it is a somewhat ambitious cookbook that tries to challenge a more experienced cook as well, the explanations are excellent so if you have any interest in cooking and are able to follow a recipe this should not be too hard to follow.

Let me preface this with, as a designer, I am a fussy brat about what goes on our coffee table and I HATE reading unless I have a sense that there is something really epic and groundbreaking going on in a book. So, yes, I have read Sous Vide at Home cover to cover, and yes, it will sit on my coffee table for at least the next two months. This book is outstanding.I work in the tech industry currently and about 6 months ago my most brilliant colleage started hounding me about how amazing sous vide is and how it will change my life forever and restore my faith in cooking, etc. etc. etc. My brother in law is a bit of a foodie so I bought him a sous vide device, this book and a handful of vaccuum sealing bags for Christmas... and then I was feeling extra generous that day so I kicked in for the same items for myself ;)So, this book came, and oh my goodness - that cover. A gorgeous silky black background with a mouth-watering steak and what I can only imagine is sea salt scattered artfully acroas the page. Turns out you CAN judge a book by the cover - every recipe inside is as tantalizing and magical as the opening image in this gastronomical page turner.I really appreciate the back stories to each section of the book, the approachable language of the author and the specific invitations to experience new people and cultures through recipes. The Chinese Tea eggs are artful and wonderful and I can't wait to try them.I seriously can't recommend this book enough for a clear and concise intro to the many and varied possibilities of sous vide, and as a work of art for any sitting room focal point. A decent book for the beginner. I am a culinary instructor at a college, a private chef and caterer and have been in the industry for 25+ years and have been cooking Sous Vide for several years now. It is great on the line when all you have to do is cut open a bag where the meat is cooked and held at a perfect temp., grill mark it and send it! For the average home cook, you may use a few time and put it in on the bookshelf never to be seen again, but it is a great tool for private chefs, small kitchen restaurants, and service at culinary schools. Recipes are meant to be played with, so have fun with it. I do warn though, there are safety concerns with sous vide; so follow recipes and safety guidlines like you would canning.

We were totally new to sous vide and decided to get some expert advice and suggestions. This book covered both of those items and we have thoroughly enjoyed this style of cooking as a result!

Have had a sour vide cooker for a while, and tried some other fancier cookbooks. This one has really made me enthusiastic for the technique. Would recommend it. Very useful and the recipes are very accessible. Just how to get the air out of the bags without having a vacuum machine was a great tip.
