Kenneth L. Calvert is an associate professor at University of Kentucky, where he teaches and does research on the design and implementation of computer network protocols. He has been doing networking research since 1987, and teaching since 1991. He holds degrees from MIT, Stanford, and the University of Texas at Austin. Michael J. Donahoo teaches networking to undergraduate and graduate students at Baylor University, where he is an assistant professor. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research interests are in large-scale information dissemination and management.

If you want to program TCP/IP and/or UDP in Java, you need to have read this book.They give the essential information to using the object libraries that interface to Sockets. They are not the final word. They are the starting point. My favor quote: "It is considered a beginners mistake to assume a single [TCP] read will read all the bytes of a single TCP write" on page 18. I have found code that was tested by Systems Engineering as being "good" that violated this principle.

If you are looking for a concise reference for TCP/IP programming in Java with examples that work, this is the book. Buy it. I studied under Dr. Ken Calvert at the University of Kentucky; he knows his stuff! A+++

Excellent precise overview of Socket/Channel/Buffer abstractions - why and how of it. The last chapter (under the hood of TCP) alone is worth the price.

This book gave me a lot of understanding how TCP/IP actually work. In a small book, author explains TCP/IP, sockets and even Java NIO. And he does it better than in specialized and verbose books, each of which is devoted to one particular subject. I strongly recommend this book, especially for learning NIO.

Learning about networking for Android apps. More in depth. I haven't had the chance to fully read the book yet.

a very nice, intro level book. it starts at the very beginning, but doesn't waste a lot of time; provides the reader with some simple working examples, well explained; and points the way to more sophisticated stuff. perfect.

Seems to be a lot of well written reviews on this book already. I do agree there is a lot of material packed into 80 pages. Example are short, practical , well written and to the point. Not for the beginner.Would be helpful if one already new their Major Scales and fingering, and the diatonic chords built on the Major scale along with some music theory.Also knowledge of Bar Chords and some of their extensions would be helpful. Over the years I have gone through many of the so called popular methods such as the Ronny Lee's and Mickey Baker's books. I find this book to be the modern version of these books.Lots of good up- to date information and condensed examples that can be applied to one's playing for the serious student of Jazz Guitar. And if you find the book to difficult or moving to fast, perhaps you are not ready for this level of guitar playing . Also consider that a good teacher might be able to direct you in the right direction, or pace you through this book based on your experience and knowledge.

Not laid out in a manner I prefer but all the content is great and I know enough to use what I need.jazz is not really for beginners anyway so yeah its a good book if you can already play.

Excellent book. Many good jazz chord progressions. Lots of jazzy licks in tablature. Has some really good jazz standards. The CD is very helpful. I would say that this book is good for intermediate and experienced players.

I bought in the kindle version, i can't see some pages because the images are too small. Also i didn't receive the audio. I recommend to buy the paper version, not the kindle one.

This book is information dense and it's going to take a bit of time to soak it all in. All in all, it's great book covering alot of ground.

This is a great book for learning the basics of how to play jazz guitar. While it's not necessarily for a beginner guitarist, it's still a good book for learning jazz.

I really enjoyed reading it. It’s Good for beginner. But the contents were not simple. Many things to think about and practice. Thanks!

The book seems to attempt to present everything in 80 pages.To illustrate, on the 8 first pages on chords, 80 different chords are presented (all with the same root, C). The title of the ninth page is "Other common chords".Sure, these are all chords that are used in jazz, but the challenge is to get so familiar with different chords that changes are almost second nature, and then I -for one- need the information presented in smaller chuncks and some excercises to internalize the information. Within the 8 pages there are 4 pages of chord progression that you may play to use the different chords. But even playing through them 10 or 20 times is not sufficient to learn 80 chords. (The chord chart is provided for each chord, so you do not need to remember any chord to play the progressions, which also slows the learning.) Moreover, there is no explanation of how each chord is derived from more basic forms, these are simply 80 independent objects to remember.All these chord progression is played on the accompanying CD, and with a definitely jazz-comp feel. However, while the book indicate an even strumming, four beat per measure, the actual playing in the CD is a syncopated rythm. Moreover, the bass is more prominent in the sound than the guitar, so it is hard to pick up the rythm used on the CD. The guitar is not isolated in one of the channel, so it is impossible to enhance it. This is a larger problem later, where the ensamble is larger with a sax, a piano, bass and drums. The guitar comp is very hard to isolate, to figure out what is going on.When it comes to improvisation the picture is the same. While other beginning books sticks to the major scale for a long time, the book jumps right ahead to harmonic minor, melodiv minor, diminised and whole tone scales. You are told that over the dominant chord you may use the mixolydian, he Prygian dominant, Lydian dominant, Super locrian, Dominant diminished, Whole tone or mixolydian scale. All this information is given before the first example of a solo is presented. And when the first solo is presented there is no analysis of it. Presumably there is no need to, all the information is already presented.If you already know a lot about jazz guitar, but need a short summary; a place to look up jazz-chord, fingerings of the different scales, brief review of which scales to use on which chords etc. This may be the book for you, hence the two stars. This also applies to those who have tons of book but lack one that summarizes it all. But as an instructional book for those who want to learn jazz guitar however, I would not recommend this one.

Like all of the other DK Eyewitness books, this one is great as a fairly comprehensive overview of the topic and is nicely (and densely) illustrated. I have always loved the sort of clean and open layout of all DK books and while some tend toward cluttered (this is one of those), they are still better designed than 90-percent of the books in the world. DK found a cool design template and ran with it and I find it to be very comfortable and very accessible.That said, these books have a tendency to be sketchy on actual details. While there is a two-page spread on clouds, for example, it's not overly informative. The information provided seems accurate and interesting, but if you're looking for a guide to different types of clouds, this is not it. I looked up things like mammatus clouds in the index, for example, and they're not listed. There are a lot of things you'd think would be included that are not.But still, as an overview and as a quick outline, these books are great. And they do serve a good purpose in that they expose you to a lot of information quickly, which makes it easier to find books that delve more deeply into the things that interest you. I bought this book used for four cents, lol, and even tough it had water damage and was missing the cd, I think I got a bargain.

I had intended to buy the DK Eye Wonder Weather which I had checked out and liked at the library, but accidentally bought this DK Eyewitness book instead. I don't need the clip art CD or poster attached in the book, but some people like that kind of thing, which is probably why the CD and poster are included with the book. Most dissappointing: some of the pictures of clouds and landscapes, for example, are too grainy and poor quality compared to similar pictures in Eye Wonder. However, the pictures of weather instruments and some drawings are quite good quality. I only wish the entire book had crisp, clear, high-quality pictures. The book cover seems waterproof and durable; no jacket. Binding seems durable, but I have not had the book long enough to test its durability. The glossary and index in the back are useful. I love the DK books, and this Weather book is one reading children can reference again and again, and non-readers can enjoy for the colorful pictures.

First off, I want to premise my review by saying that this book is a learning experience. Some of the stories are quite funny, while others are not as funny. I consider some of them a "teachable moment", as in what NOT to do when encountering wild animals. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I laughed out loud a few times with some of these stories. I have always loved our wildlife, especially bears, and this just makes me love them more. It really shows you how incredibly intelligent bears are and at times, a comedy show. Not that encountering one in the wild would be relaxing, but still. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves bears and our beautiful wildlife.

We have always enjoyed stories of animal/people interactions (think James Heriot or Carolyn Jourdan's personal veterinary stories) plus we live near the Great Smoky Mountain National Park where we have hiked a fair amount and I have spent some time there fishing and volunteering with the fisheries department, so this was a particularly enjoyable read. More importantly perhaps are the messages that Ms Jourdan works into some rather rollicking tales; wild animals are unpredictable and many visitors are clueless. I personally have not had any close interactions with bears (thankfully) but I appreciated the educational bent to many of her stories--I feel a little better equipped should it happen. As a longtime outdoor person I couldn't help but get some good laughs at some of the "interactions" of clearly uninformed people and bears. This is a great companion book to Bear in the Back Seat I & II. If you like outdoor stories of people and wild animals this whole collection is worth reading. If you are "city folk" and are thinking about visiting this area reading this would be a worthwhile activity--forewarned is forearmed!

I don't know anything about bears (there are none in my country) so it was interesting to read these stories. I am now very glad that there are no bears in my country!Some of the stories were quite funny but I must say, I was a bit shocked to read about people hiking alone or working alone up trees or abandoning their work partner in potentially dangerous situations.(Just for the record: vodka in a spray bottle is widely used by theatre wardrobes the world over to remove sweat smells from costumes! The costumes do need to be able to dry out however so spraying the inside of a bear suit would definitely be problematic)

Wonderful book to make you laugh and enjoy some of the antics of the black bears. It also shows how stubborn people are that don't obey signs and communications about not feeing bears or leaving food where they can smell it or get to it. I feel sorry for he Rangers who have to try and save people's lives who do not follow the rules. The book was very enjoyable and I recommend it to everyone who loves stories about bears.

Having visited the Great Smoky many times, I can relate to these stories. Though never see in a bear, except those kept in confinement at the top of the mountain where the lift-car takes visitors up and at Zoo's I have visited. I know these are animals could inflict lots of pain, if they so choose.Living in the Midwest all my life, I know there are many dangers waiting for those who choose to enter wooded areas. These Rangers and park personnel must be special people for putting their lives on the line to insure that visitors can enjoy their visit to one of the most beautiful places in America.

Written from the Park Rangers perspective these stories gave the feeling of actually being in the moment, without the danger. I wanted it to go on and on as I'm sure there are many more stories out there. Here's hoping !

This book is a delightful mix of true stories about bear encounters by rangers and others in the Great Smokey Mountains. Many are very humorous although not all. The author also weaves her own comments at times. Probably my favorite story is about a tourist, a bear, and vanilla wafers. The ranger came upon a lady standing with a large bear also standing with his paws on the lady's shoulders. She was placing a wafer in her mouth and the bear was taking it and eating it. To learn the rest of the story you will need to read the book, but I am convinced you will not regret doing so.

Thanks once again Carolyn for bringing us both funny and scary stories about the bears, rangers, and people in the Smokies! Short, quick, and fun to read! I hope printed ones are available before Christmas as they would make great stocking stuffers!The stories excite us and make us laugh, but teach us too!

Irene W. Leigh, PhD, is a Deaf psychologist whose experience includes high school teaching, psychological assessment, psychotherapy, and private practice. From 1985 to 1991 she was a psychologist and assistant director at the Lexington Center for Mental Health Services. She taught in the Gallaudet University Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program from 1992 to 2012, was Psychology Department Chair from 2008 to 2012, and attained professor emerita status in 2012. Jean F. Andrews, PhD, received a bachelor's degree in English language and literature from Catholic University, in Washington, DC, a master's in education in Deaf education from McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College) in Westminster, Maryland, and a doctorate in speech and hearing sciences from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Dr. Andrews was a classroom teacher of reading at the Maryland School for the Deaf in Frederick, Maryland. Raychelle L. Harris, PhD, a third generation Deaf and a native ASL signer, received her bachelor's degree in American Sign Language (ASL) from Gallaudet University in 1995 and master's degree in Deaf education from Western Maryland College in 2000. Dr. Harris has been teaching ASL as a first and second language since 1993. She returned to Gallaudet University for her doctoral studies in the areas of education and linguistics, with her dissertation topic focused on ASL discourse in academic settings.

Great book, good read and my special needs daughter really understands now what the 4th of July is all about!

A good book that is close to a great book for children regarding Independence Day in the United States. Wonderful pictures and includes history as well as popular ways to celebrate our country. Includes the Declaration of Independence as part of the story rather than just talking about fireworks as so many children's books do.My only disappointment in this book is in the back, under the heading of "Just the Facts". For "What:" Independence day is defined as "a cheerful holiday that emphasizes freedom, equality, patriotism, and togetherness", all true and good descriptives of the day and what it feels like and looks like. However, not a great definition of what it actually is: a day to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, what that meant, who were the heros who signed, why they signed and why Independence was declared. Must teach our children the full meaning. Since Constitution Day is not usually observed by many Independence Day is also becoming a day to review that foundational document as well.Would still recommend the book as mostly good, just somewhat incomplete in glossary definitions.
