"A superb account of how a controversial technology becomes normalized patient by patient. While following families from newborn screening to post-Cochlear implant, Laura Mauldin shows that little of the political turmoil related to this medical technology is salient for the parents faced with a child with hearing loss."—Stefan Timmermans, University of California, Los Angeles"Dr Mauldin is a talented writer who offers keen insight in several areas where practitioners can improve."—Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education

I'm deaf and I work within the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention system. This book was by far the most illuminating narrative I've read about how families of children that are deaf or hard of hearing born today are immediately put on a track for oral/aural and auditory habilitation and presumed cochlear implantation. Not only did this book describe the process parents undergo (yes, one downside was the small and limited number of families that were followed for this book), but Mauldin most importantly helped me understand the socio-cultural and medical narrative perspectives of deafness and essentially why there is such a divide in the long-battled positions of proponents of oralism and those of a Deaf identity and use of American Sign Language (ASL). I like how Mauldin clearly outlines her biases upfront and describes her structured and anthropology-based approach in documenting and capturing this unique cross-section of how modern medicine and technology interacts with both mainstreamed and minority cultures. A must read for anyone in the EHDI field, Universal Newborn Hearing Screening state programs, Audiologists, Speech and Language Pathologists, Deaf Educators and parents alike.

This book has really helped to open my eyes to the perspective of members of the Deaf culture about cochlear implants and the decision to implant very young children. The CI industry may not have been as altruistic as hearing people might think. The industry is just that and is very profitable. Professionals really need to be supportive of family's decision making on implantation. Reading this book has helped me to see this more clearly.I still support implantation for children, but there is lots of things that families need to consider and they should be supported with being fully educated on the pros and cons of ASL and oralism. One is not THE answer, in my opinion.

This book is a great resource for people who are familiar or unfamiliar with the competing narratives of deafness: the medical narrative to support the need for a miracle cure and the socio-cultural narrative that emphasizes the linguistic and cultural rights of the Deaf community. The author did a wonderful job in summarizing the complicated narratives in her introduction, but she made an important (and controversial) point that the readers should take note: both narratives reject disability as one attribute that falls out of the acceptable range of human diversity. The medical narrative may make sense in this case since the goal is to rehabilitate people and bring them closer to the norm; but with the socio-cultural narrative, deafness is seen as part of human diversity but not as a disability since deaf people have a community, a history, and a language in order to function as human beings. The socio-cultural narrative is useful for the Deaf community to frame their reality this way so they can maintain their culture and language against the oppressive nature of audism, but by rejecting their connection with disability, it does very little to support the reality that disability studies scholars, activists, advocates, and allies involved in the disability rights movement have been pushing for decades: that disability is also part of human diversity and that the society must end its oppression and discrimination of people with disabilities. This is especially important because about 90% of deaf and hard of hearing people with or without additional disabilities were born to hearing families (meaning family members who are not deaf and not familiar with sign language and Deaf culture) and the majority of these families typically do not question the ableist ideology that having a disability (including deafness) make their children different (read: not normal) and they must do something about it. This is what the book is about: hearing parents who unexpectedly bear deaf children who are not like them and they need support and guidance from people who supposedly know best - the medical professionals on hearing loss and speech and hearing rehabilitation. What I appreciate about this book that the author doesn't put anyone in a negative light or paint the medical professionals as the enemies of the Deaf community. Everyone in the book seem to be sincere in their attempts to provide the best future for deaf children. What the author is trying to point out is that the ideological intersection of gender-specific parenthood, ableism, medicalization, and technology defines what it means to be "normal"; it explains why people do the way they are doing when it comes to children with their hearing abilities that do not fit with the norm. The book does contain its limitations as the author discusses in her introduction: it follows a small number of families and all of the medical staff in the book are at one medical center in New York City. It may not represent the majority of the families in the rest of the country and the world, but it offers useful and honest insights on the reality that the families and their deaf children with cochlear implants are going through today.

I highly recommend this book as someone who was deafened at 2 from an illness, raised oral, using sign language in a school for deaf, attending mainstream, schools as the only deaf person without any formal support services, attending universities and finally using access services. I'm a profoundly deaf whom hearing aids were of no use and currently use a cochlear implant. I'm also fluent in ASL as a fifth language and I'm a foreign born but my deafness didn't prevent me from mastering English as a foreign language. I find it sad about division between oral and signing cultures and feel that everyone needs to get along. As a deaf adult, I believe in using all communication options whenever possible and not limiting to just one.

An absorbing view of people regarding cochlear implants for children, their mindsets, goals and hopes. It challenges the medical viewpoint that a cochlear implant is a standard treatment for deafness, because it is much more complicated than that. As no two individuals are alike, nor are their families, the results of CI surgery are variable. To be taken into consideration are the expectations of the parents, their social environment and preconceptions, their inner feelings of guilt and acceptance, and their reasonings for subjecting their children to surgery. Since nothing is guaranteed in any major decision concerning children, well-informed parents need to also examine their motivations and weigh their options as well as that of their children. Also examined are the preconceptions of society in general as well as those of doctors.

Instead of the same old tired, secret manifesting "struggle" against what ain't and try and only focus on what you want, this angel brings a divinely new perspective. It is deeply archetypal, thus even a Jungian analyst could love the bringing forth in this book.Bravo Tosha.i am allowing it to come forth.

Tosha's book came as a pleasant, long anticipated surprise. The lines she wrote are thoughtful, and strike right to the heart. The book, however, is quite small, like a precious gem, and must be savored slowly, a few pages at a time and not taken in a one hour literary glut so that you sit with her words whirling in your mind and in your heart, not able to piece anything together coherently. Perhaps that was the key after all... It is a wonderful book, and I will treasure it.Patrick

With so much chaos and transition roiling around us at the moment, this small book of poems is startling in it's poignancy. As a follow-up to Outrageous Openness this little book presents the same material in a more esoteric way and in the process channels it with more mystery and magic. The poems are perfect to read as part of ritual or just a nice way to end the day as a reminder to surrender to the Divine. If you are going through a hard time or just a spiritual seeker, this book is definitely work picking up. Since reading it I've recommended it to several friends.

Tosha Silver, one of my new favorite authors! I highly recommend this book and if you haven't purchased "outrageous openness, letting the divine take the lead," you need to. Her writing is magic to me. Thank you Tosha! A must have for your book collection.

Each poem is a poignant and succinct reminder that surrendering to a higher power is all it takes to have a joyful existence. It's kind of the condensed and lyrical version of "Outrageous Openness," Silver's first book on turning life over to divine order. Love and wit resonate in every page -- I highly recommend it as a gentle reminder for how to trust in a higher power and leave fear behind.

The simplicity of this book is part of it's genuine depth. It packs a punch directly speaking to your Inner Guide, with words that echo the resounding part of every human being on earth....hope. Make Me Your Own reassures the reader of the hope that lies in the art of surrender, and letting go completely in trust. Only from life's personal experience could an author leave you with such a comforting words that leave dellicate footprints to walk around showing us that Love never really fails and shows up in a variety of ways to claim, or re-claim itself through us. It's a keeper.

Great book. Love her prayers. I have her first book, Outrageous Openness and I love that book and call upon Divine Order and use her prayers in that book. This is her collection of prayers and they are wonderful.

I absolutely love Tosha Silver! Her writings are so uplifting and from Spirit. This book is in the same vein. One to read daily. She always leaves me waiting for her next publication!

Sometimes the person you love exist right under your nose.Friendship makes the best bridge to love.Jessica's actions are both annoying & admirable. Her stubbornness though meant to help always puts her & her family in trouble. The Raiders actions doesn't seem well thought of either.Love the ending though.

Jude Deveraux is one of my favorite authors of all time. But, this early book shows where she started and how much she's grown. The Raider has a great plot idea, but it gets bogged down in people behaving badly toward one another. The heroine is supposedly beautiful, and has been chased by every available man in the village, yet she heaps scorn on the one who was nicest to her, simply because he's overweight. Instead, she lusts after The Raider, simply because he's a virile specimen. It would have shown great growth on her part had she decided she loved her husband before he revealed that he was The Raider. Predictable story.

A good story of early America (state of Maine) and how feelings were with England was trying to control what the American did and how they had to pay levies on material they bought - Story is about a son who comes home to see what troubles his family in the small town. About one man who tries to play to roles(both in love with the same women) and tries to keep her and him out of getting hung. Good summer reading

Another well written story about how the characters are nicely written about how the characters lived in this time period

As always Jude Deveraux has written another exciting romance. The Raider set in colonial America just before the revolution is an amusing story of choices made and must be continued. Jessie is torn between the Raider and Alex. Each offering her their love, each with different demands Jessie does not realize they are one and the same. My only wish was a little more character development of Eleanor and Nicholas.

It's the fifth time I've read this book and every time I find a new thing to fall in love about this book

She has a way of writing a story that keeps you intrigued all the way through it. You keep wanting to know "what happens next" - Alex hates injustice and lo and behold, so does Jessie. They should work well together - you'd think, right? Loved the story from start to finish. I want to know Nick's story now - loved the ending of the Raider.

All of Jude Deveraux's books are fantastic! Great story telling. I am on book 6 of the Montgomery/Taggert Series and all are difderent yet well told stories that will keep you reading until the end. Knight and Shinig Armour was one of my favorites, to name a few. I haven't read one of her books that I didnt like.

I'm tempted to start off by saying "This book is terrible", but I'm aware I can be a little overly blunt since the stroke, so I'll try to give details instead of opinions.I expected a variety of puzzles of varying levels, as would be appropriate to the wide variety of stroke patients of varying abilities who might think they'd benefit from such a book. There were 219 pages of THE SAME SIMPLISTIC WORD PUZZLES, with a couple "coloring pages" thrown in, seemingly as an afterthought. (Sorry, there's my opinion creeping in, along with a negative attitude.)There were no visual puzzles, no math problems, no logic problems, no memory challenges.Word puzzles. Pages and pages of word puzzles.I'm going to stop now. I have a lot of opinions about this book, 99% of which are negative, and will provide no benefit other than venting my anger at the waste of money I experienced when purchasing this book.In my 53 years of collecting, reading, and frankly worshiping hundreds of books, there are only a small handful I've not completed for various reasons such as boredom, bad plot, shameless bias, etc. There are exactly TWO books I have actually thrown into the trash rather than take the risk they'd defile the eyes of another reader. This is one. (The other is Zoo, "by James Patterson" [but really by some newbie, writing under his name], in case you're in the market for another terrible book.)But I'm not a doctor or a stroke therapist, just a survivor. Perhaps there is some hidden purpose for the devastatingly dull repetition found in this book. I apologize for my rant. I'm sure Mr. Toth is a good person with good intentions.

Laugh while you learn! I bought this book for my 82 year old father who suffered from a stroke last year. Physically he was regaining movement of his arms and hands with physical therapy. Still he was having trouble remembering things. His doctor suggested trying "Puzzles for Stroke Patients" to exercise and challenge his mind. Now we do 10 to 12 questions from this book every day and Dad has made tremendous improvements in logic , memory and self-esteem . He actually asks to solve problems from his "Thinking Book" as he calls it. It is wonderful to see him so enthusiastic about learning again. As one of his caregivers, I enjoy the fun and laughable tone of many of the questions and puzzles myself. Dad and I have learned dozens of fun facts from this entertaining resource.A Hollywood, movie star theme is used in much of the book which has us reminiscing about all our all-time favorite movies and famous movie stars. Dad was always a big Elvis fan and the Elvis Presley word search is his favorite. I make copies before we solve each puzzle so that we can do them over again. Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis - all of our best loved Hollywood celebrities are there! The Film Trivia pages are great too. We are learning so much. I actually have Dad using the computer again to search the internet for the answers. He was surprisingly good with his desktop before the stroke and now he has an IPad so he can "Google" the missing words in the movie titles, like: Andy Hardy's Private ______. (Go ahead - look it up!)We love remembering old TV Shows. "I Love Lucy", "All in the Family" and "Mash" were shows we never missed. Dad also loves British Comedy and the "Keeping Up Appearances" word search puzzle had me, Dad and his other caregiver, Violet (yes, really) hysterical recollecting the antics of Hyacinth Bucket (Bouquet) and her family. The Art Therapy coloring pages were difficult for Dad at first, even so, he enjoyed the fun traffic signs and strange facts on those pages, like the French sign from Canada about watching out for collisions with moose! Now that his manual dexterity has improved, he whips thru the coloring exercises like a pro.Sudoku number logic puzzles were a big challenge for me and Dad (even before the stroke). To get us started, I look up the answers and fill in several of the 3x3 groups. In the beginning we needed to cheat on about 5 3x3's, but now we are down to only 3. We are working on it!! Dad is certain he will be able to do Sudoku on his own in a matter of weeks. The author of "Puzzles for Stroke Patients" must have travelled extensively in the US and Europe. There are photo picture puzzles from all over globe, including Paris. This book has it all, even the word square puzzles have the added Words of the Wise sayings on each page and the 10 letter word searches also quizzes you on US state capitals. The more Dad and I use this book, the more we love it - it never gets boring - we laugh and learn with clever challenges every day!

As a health care professional working with stroke patients, I feel that these puzzles would only meet the needs of those that were much higher level functioning. A suggestion would be to change the print on the word problems since the very tiny print is not appropriate for many of the older adults where a much larger font size is recommended. I expected a greater variety of items and since there were no sample pages it was quite a surprise to see the content was so repetitive. The concepts were interesting and perhaps you may want to delete the "for stroke patients" so it would be purchased by a more appropriate audience.

This entertaining puzzle book is tailored to help in the quick recovery of brain functions after a stroke. This brain health resource can also be used by seniors, elderly, Parkinson’s & Alzheimer’s victims to maintain their brain in good operating condition & prevent dementia. Normal adults may find the book interesting & useful to sharpen their brain. The title part “for Stroke Patients” occurs only at 3 places therefore easily can be brushed over with nail polish to make it disappear. This superior mind therapy resource has about 50 puzzle types with a large vocabulary of over 8,000 words. Some of the puzzles are in large print but not all.The major puzzle groups: language, math, logic & graphics; instructions are provided for all. The language puzzle group includes: word search, diagonal word square, missing vowels & scrambled words. The math group consists of: arithmetic drills, department store/supermarket shopping math & airline travel math. The logic group features: Sudoku, brain teasers, quizzes & Hollywood trivia. The graphics group boasts: humorous coloring pages with letter outlines and picture puzzles.Working with art therapy coloring pages is essential for fine motor skills recovery which are necessary for writing and other everyday activities.Solutions are provided for all puzzles either at the bottom of page in reverse or at the end of the book. The only exception is Word Search. If the patient does not find a word in a Word Search grid, caregiver or family members should help out.

I had mixed reactions to the book. On one hand, how can anyone but root for Diane and Paul, and suffer along with them as they struggled through the horror of these circumstances? I felt happy as clarity surfaced in Paul's damaged brain, and wanted to give Diane a hug during the early days when she went through her caregiver role as a zombie.Yet there were some difficulties in the book. At times, Diane overused metaphors in a way that obscured rather than clarified her points. Here's an example of overwriting, wherein she describes her mannerisms changing to accommodate Paul's limitations:"I now seemed to quarry words, one by one, presenting them like bright bits of jasper—not slurred in a wash of flurried adjectives—when I spoke to Paul. Sometimes with a flutter of agitated worry that felt like a beetle was trapped inside my ribs. But I savored the delicious warm touch-ribbons of silent affection, uniting and comforting us, even when words failed. And I followed the stew of sympathy from friends, whose faces flickered with unrefined sorrow-compassion-pity."Also, I was disappointed that Diane, while knocked back by the overwhelming load of caregiving, adapts to it somehow, yet she declines to explain those successful strategies. What a great service that would have been. Here's an example of what most of us either have gone through or will in the future:"My body also felt derelict and unlived in. Every little thing, no matter how small—putting on makeup, changing my clothes, washing my hair—seemed to add boulders to an already unbearable weight. I felt as if a spare particle would make me collapse. I kept forgetting to eat, and, anyway, the refrigerator was bare because I hadn’t the energy to shop." Like many people, I've been there. What did she do about it? How did she handle it? Not said. And: "...caregiving had its hopes and charms, but on the downside, this meant that every hour was interruptible. My days no longer contained adjoining hours in which to work. Yet I had a new book to write...So while Paul was straining mentally to reclaim language, I was straining to learn the peculiar skill of concentrating on my work in attention gulps...while keeping one ear open for signs of discord or trouble." Again, I know that feeling of interruption, and the frustration that makes one want to throw everything in the trash and say the heck with it, I'll just give up being a person and dedicate my life to caring for you. Diane struggled with this, but she doesn't say how she surmounts it.She also reveals that she's married a man who is quite a bit older than her, who was in the past given to alcoholic rages and verbal abuse. The balance of power in this relationship is striking. I say this realizing I'm commenting on the apparent nature of their relationship, which is none of my business and not the point of the book. Still, it's like an unacknowledged third protagonist. In summary, Diane Ackerman has done a good job of describing one stroke, one man, and one dedicated wife. The potential for teaching others how to deal with a similar situation remains unrealized, regrettably.

This book would probably not be for everyone, but I liked it. It is a very detailed account of how the author helped her husband find his way back, more or less, from a devastating stroke. I found her patience and upbeat spirit admirable. It is truly a story of a great love written by a great lady. She did have her challenging and discouraging moments, but seemed to always rise above them. He is a very lucky man to have her

Beautiful, moving book about the power of love and dedication. I was a physician until I was felled by a brain disorder, so this book was meaningful to me both personally and professionally. Initially I read this as a library book. It was so good, I bought it to re-read as well as copies to send to my physician friends.

My husband was one month into stroke recovery with aphasia when I found this book. I was feeling lost and frustrated and unable to let anyone know what I was really going through. Then I found that Diane Ackerman had been where I was and survived it. With each page, she shares the painful and difficult moments in her and her husband's road to recovery with intense honesty and feeling. Although every stroke is different, her insights into her husband's aphasia has given me ways to understand, cope, and work with my husband. This is a beautiful story of love and commitment. It inspired me and helped to to stay strong.

this book touched me in ways i did not expect. two wordsmiths are decimated by paul's stroke. his partial recovery of his marvelous, neologistic, brilliant wordplay is inspirational. equally compelling is ackerman's account of the weeks in the hospital, the drain of being a constant caretaker, the loss of her own work, the loss of all those words -- as i wrote to some friends when recommending this book, when i read his first word joke after this horrible stroke and double aphasia -- i cried.wow.

This was surprisingly short of emotional context which made some parts too long and almost boring. I expected to see more of the process of the 100 names for love as they appeared in real life rather than simply having a list at the end. It would have been nice if each chapter were labeled with one of the names so that more of the before and after lives could be shared but clearly that's a different book.

This book is amazing on many levels. Interesting analysis of what goes on in a person's brain and in his life during and after a stroke. Incredible testimony of support and love of the caregiver/wife. Not too rose-colored glasses - yes, it is difficult to give up yourself to care for another even when you love him. And Ackerman lets us know that.On the other hand, and even giving Diane Ackerman many many kudos for both her loving support of her husband and for her writing, it gets a little old hearing her pat herself on the back. It only became tiring for me 3/4 of the way through, so that's not too bad, I guess.I prefer to think someone is wonderful than to hear them tell me how wonderful they are...over and over.Good thinking on her part to let the reader know right up front that her husband regained much functioning. It would be just too grueling to read otherwise. As it is, even with my high recommendations, none of my friends has wanted to read this book. The subject matter may just be too threatening.Imho, extremely worth reading.

This is a very vividly written book on what the experience is like to have a loved one survive a stroke.
