I was lucky enough to pick this up from my local library system through Overdrive. My friend, Cheryl, wrote an intriguing review that had me searching it out. [...]I had hoped to read while listening but the ebook but it didn't come to me in time. That was okay. It provided my background entertainment while I worked on the charity hats and dolls. The reader, Meredith Mitchell, kept me involved in the story of Temple Grandin's life.I have read other books about and by Ms. Grandin. Though this book is for young people, I found it more thorough than the others in covering the aspects of autism, living with it and knowing someone who has it. The author was able to bring this disorder to the understanding that a young person would need.Something that I felt when reading this book and others about autism is that I think there are levels of this that many of us have. The sensitivities Temple had to scratchy clothing or loud noises or too many people or strong light I can relate to. The inability to connect to others, especially in a crowded room, I can understand, too. Knowing that Ms. Grandin found ways to make her disability work for her in her life gives us all inspiration to see how we can overcome our own problems.Though this is for children, it is neither a short book nor pablum for babies. I felt there was a lot of depth to the stories told and much to learn for all of us. Please, seek it out and see how you like it.

This is about an extremely successful woman that was so strong willed and determined to make it through the uncomfortable torment that often comes with being on the Autism Spectrum. Having to deal with rude, unknowing people yet found her strengths and uses them to the best of her abilities. I have 3 sons and a husband on the spectrum, and although it's extremely difficult at times, Temple has given me hope for my children's futures. Something no doctor (not even the best of them) has been able to do. I've spent a lot of money on so many exspensive books that may as well have been written in Chinese. Temple's books will help you to understand what someone on the spectrum goes through everyday. Something a doctor will never be able to do. I also strongly recommend "Emergence". One of her best books and so easy to understand.

This book is so enlightening for anyone just entering the world of autism. Lots of early childhood information. You'll be amazed at how far down Temple started, how closed up with no understanding her world was and how far she came! It is a Junior biography, so great for older children (5th thru 9th grade) living in a home with an autistic sibling.

This book is a primer for all the people out there that think that autistic people ought to be locked up and the key thrown away. Grandin, an autistic person, and considered one of the top ten people in the world that is moving the arc of history, shows how she found a future through her autism and can open the door for all the troubled spirits out there that think there is no future. I have read other books by Temple; this is a book about her, written by a man who took the time to study Temple's entire life. It includes great photos and is well-written. Pick up this book and be ready to be amazed!

This is a book very well written and really very easy to read.It gives you the main events in Temple Grandin life from the little girl to the renown expert and teacher.Despite the fact, that it won't give you all there is two know in cattle handling, it will explain in a few words and a very easy to understand way how she managed to improved cattle handling.It gives you an insight on how hard the people may be against change, new idea and people who look different and do not master all the social skills.I am very impressed by her stamina and the way she managed despite all the obstacles.

Great book for a middle grade biography. I am donating to my school library because it will be perfect for a middle grade reader to use as a reference for a biography report. This book covers three main topics: Temple's life story, animal processing and treatment/the fight for humane treatment, and autism. It is well done, lots of pictures and diagrams, with "facts about autism" interludes or "facts about the meat industry" pages. The facts are appropriate, accurate and not overly graphic so a middle level reader can read and think at a high level about important concepts. Highly recommend.

I absolutely loved the movie of her life, and wanted to know more about her. This book does have more in it than the movie, but it is clearly written for a younger audience. The writing style (though appropriate for the intended audience) and relatively shallow depth of subject matter was a bit off for me.Am I sorry I read it? Not at all! I just want more.

Anthony Apesos is an artist and professor at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Anthony Apesos was my painting teacher in my last semester of art school. He introduced me to the traditional methods of oil painting, which made it possible for me to finish my portfolio and, more importantly, graduate. Maybe it's because he was my teacher that I held off in buying book on artistic anatomy as long as I did for whatever twisted reason my 21 year old mind came up with to justify not buying. It has been several years since I purchased it and I can honestly say it was worth every penny. Tony's book is an incredibly practical and really unique approach to learning human anatomy that has already become one of the most worn out books on my bookshelf. Simply put, he asks us, the reader, to point out bones and muscles on our own body, exploring their origin/insertion points and the movement so as to fully appreciate their complexity and abilities. For artists this is a gem, an invaluable piece of artistic knowledge that no matter what level of anatomical understanding one has it will open your eyes. As a teacher of anatomy now, I have put Tony's book to good use in my lectures; It provides me a way to break the ice with new students and establish a fun, learning environment (who doesn't enjoy watching a teacher make a complete ass of themselves?). It also provides me with great comic relief when everyone joins in and starts poking themselves, jumping, flapping their arms around, and enjoying the interactivity of learning anatomy the Apesos way. When asked by eager students which books and authors I hold to high esteem, this book is up there with Bridgman, Loomis, and Goldfinger.

Anthony Apeso's Anatomy for Artists is, as the title suggests, written by an artist who understands how artists think. His unique approach rivals and references the way artists of centuries past explored the human body in order to understand how best to portray it in drawings and paintings. All too often today, art students must rely solely on static imagery or personal observation of the nude model in order to learn about anatomy. Mr. Apesos' writings teach anatomical studies by doing... thus reminding the artist of the function of what lies beneath the skin's surface. Using specific examples of how to identify bone structure, muscle mass and location by using the artist's own physical self as the subject of exploration, the reader is then encouraged to put his or her own body into motion. This book is particularly good for visual learners who cannot easily navigate the text of a science- based anatomy book.As a fine artist and arts educator, I have found this book to be such a successful teaching tool that it is now a required part of my drawing curriculum. From a practical standpoont, the reasonable price is a welcome change for students who must normally pay much more for anatomy reference books. Lastly, while some readers seem to have had issues with the illustrations by Karl Stevens, I might suggest they revisit the fine engravings of earlier centuries and reevaluate their own appreciation for the beauty of the line.

Similar approach to anatomy as Riven Phoenix in his "Drawing the Human Figure From Your Mind" DVD Series. 4 out of 5 simply because the evolutionary reference (from ape to man) is unnecessary as I'm trying to learn human anatomy, not ape anatomy.

The book was mandatory for one of my art classes but we never actually used it. This is probably good to draw the human anatomy but our school didn't even teach us the basics.

The Complete Idiot Books have never failed me (3 out of 3). For the individual/hobby programmer this is your goto book to GET GOING. Later on you can use other books/internet helps for the BLOAT features of VB NET (a dozen ways to define list structures or convert data types). NOT for the professional programmer working in a group project. Getting a bit dated about file IO and ZERO on DATABSE or WEB stuff. I use this book as a quick syntax memory jogger and its never to far away from my desk.

This is a great book for beginners as well as programmers with some experience. The book is easy to understand, contains almost no typos and the code examples are very reliable in terms of not containing errors. More knowledgeable programmers can spice up the sample code with more functionality, and even beginners can too as they progress through out the book. Since the code examples are unrealistically easy, juicing up the code helps one mirror more real world situations to some extent. One small draw back, and an example of juicing up the code, is that the book does not cover the With/ End With construct, which comes in handy in many of the examples. After reading this book the programmer can move on to more advanced books. Happy Visual Basic 6 programming!

A good first book to introduce you to coding; however, if you are serious about becoming a proficient programmer, you will need other to consult other books/workbooks to learn more.

i dont quite remember it, im reviewing a long time after i havent touched it, but i do remember that i enjoyed it.

If you decided that just the sound of the word 'programming' sounds fun and you want to see what it's all about, or if you are just completely new to programming, this book may not be the right one.When I first read this book, I had no previous programming experience whatsoever. At first, the author amused me a bit and convinced me to read on and that it's a piece of cake.One problem with this book, although this is only an introduction, is that it does not provide any exercises to drill the basics into your head. It merely demonstrates the code with several examples, and after that the chapter is over. Even though some examples may be explicit, there is still not enough there to facilitate your remembering of previous chapters. I found myself constantly flipping back when I did not recognize certain code.The other major problem is that the examples that are provided are too complex. Even when he breaks the it down piece by piece, the concept of the code is still hard to grasp. I frequently struggled trying to understand what was happening in the code itself, even after it was explained.I strongly recommend beginners to purchase another book. After you have learned all the basics of the langauge, this book is very helpful for re-enforcing what you already know and finding more advanced ways to approach certain problems.

This was my first VB book and I've read it twice. It is done in an easy to read style with lots of examples. For a novice who knows nothing about VB it makes for a good introductory start. However, one must be warned that this book will only get you started. By being limited to the "Complete Idiot's Guide" format there simply is not enough information in the book to prepare a person to actually sit down and write a serious program. Plan on adding more detailed books to your reading list if you are trying to teach yourself VB. With that said, I would recommend this book to total newbies who want a relaxed introduction to VB without being turned off by some of the more technical tomes available. This book will get you warmed up and ready for the heavier sources. Experienced programmers will find this to be a waist of time.

This book is fun to read, yet it still manages to introduce the most useful tasks in VB. Each of the 26 chapters is short enough to keep you on your toes and long enough to give you a sense of accomplishment at the end.Written not just for people new to VB6 but programming in general. I found the "Programmer's Guide" on the VB6 CDROM too technical but this book was easier to follow. The author throws in lots of jokes to make the new concepts and technical terms more fun to learn.If you've never programmed before and want to make a start, buy this book, which includes a "working model" of VB6 on CD.

Simplistic in the extreme... don't expect to be able to do much with visual basic after completing this book. A quote from the book:"By the way, a Visual Basic .NET program uses an asterisk (*) to represent multiplication, not a X symbol as you might expect."New topics are covered in just enough depth to become familiar but useless. This is a painless introduction to the topic... however the real pain will come when you try utilizing all the knowledge you've gained and discover that the depth of your understanding isn't sufficient really to do much more than write trivial programs similiar to the trivial examples presented in the book. For example: scrollbars are introduced as stand alone objects without mention of how they might be made part of a window.

This book is broken down in a way that is very easy to understand. Not only will this book help you to pass the Comptia A+ exam (which I did after reading it), but it's great to use as a resource after you're certified. As for the negative reviews given to this book because people thought that a DVD ROM was not included in error, this edition does not come with a DVD as the labs and practice tests are instead downloaded from a website to be run on your computer.This book really helped me to pass the CompTia A+ exam. I would definitely recommend this book to people even with a casual understanding of computers that are interested in getting certified.

 Okay, so it does have good information, but it seems to leave out a lot! I'll get back to that in a moment. There are a lot of typos and formatting errors, which drive me up the wall!! This author's editor should be shot, and then the author should be shot. Doesn't anyone proof read anymore? The biggest disappointment was the practice questions following each chapter. Many times, the answer to a question will not have been addressed in the text. At all. I wish I kept a record of all of them. Other times, the wrong answer will be listed. The explanation is right, but the letter (multiple choice) is flat-out wrong. Or maybe the explanation is just really confusing...Here's an example from pages 1004/1006, question/answer 18.Question:You want to share the data folder as a resource to be used only by network administrators. How should you do this?A) Hide the share ...B) Don't share the folder ...C) Set up the share permissions ...D) Share ... and don't set any permissions.Answer:A) The best way to be sure that no one except network administrators can access a shared resource is to share the resource and set the proper permissions. When you share the resource, though, it may be best to hide it from the network by making it a hidden share so that no one tires to sneak into it.I've always used a combination of A & C, as the answer explains, but you can only choose one answer. So which is the best, Glen? You said "best" twice in your explanation.

Having a background in over-the-phone troubleshooting and customer service, this book is hard to read. The technical aspect is great and totally applicable to Comp TIA BUT I would definitely discount the author's customer service experience. Within the first few chapters, he suggests some things to say to your customers that would certainly escalate any situation.If you do buy this, don't take the 'customer service tips' to heart.

This book is extremely accessible even if you're not Bill Gates. It's got brevity and keeps you engaged while you learn a ton. I'm reading twice before I take my test. It's a small investment that can get your new career going.

I expected a watered down book covering basic concepts, but this is full of details that should make this an excellent book to use in preparing for the exams. Please note that I have not yet taken the exams.

I have several of Myron's cookbooks. They are well organized, detailed and the instructions are pretty good. His 'style' of BBQ is very different than mine - I like very very simple BBQ with very little sugar. I like to let the flavor of the meat speak. Having said that, I have learned a lot about technique from reading his books. I think he and Aaron Franklin are the two hottest BBQ chefs in the country. If you can't learn anything from Myron's books you are not being open-minded.Separately, I made his cornbread recipe not once, but twice. Both times it turned out like a rock. My better half confirmed all the ingredients I put in against the recipe. I am convinced the recipe is missing something - namely a leavening agent. If you make this recipe I recommend adding a tsp of baking powder.Overall he writes great books, but let's be honest, you didn't buy the book for his baking skills :-)Follow-up: I wrote Myron's team at jacksoldsouth.com (via the 'contact us' function) about the cornbread recipe. I was most impressed that they wrote back immediately and admitted the recipe was missing a leavening agent...the recipe needs 1.5 tsp of baking powder and 0.5 tsp of baking soda. They will fix the recipe in future editions. So refreshing to deal with an organization that admits its errors so readily. My kind of people.

I'm currently on his first cookbook. his recipies are all great the only thing I do recommend is when cooking with this man especially be sure to use a traditional wood/charcoal smoker as a electric smoker will not keep enough heat to cook your meat for and to provide you time to add basting. If you remember his recipies you can easily win any cookoff at your local fair pending he is not around.

My DH LOVES to BBQ. He's started a collection of BBQ Cookbooks, utensils, gear, etc. This was a perfect edition full of recipes and helpful hints for a newer BBQer. My husband's a reader so he particularly enjoyed this book by one of the stars from one of his favorite cooking shows. It gives lots of details and little stories about the author and his experiences. A great gift for a starter BBQer.

On certain BBQ forums, I've read negative reviews about Myrons books; however, in my opinion, they can't be more wrong. What I like about this book is, the recipes are simple. A lot of BBQ "experts" will make simple BBQ complicated. Even the ingredients that Myron recommends are those found in most homes. I checked this book out from my local library and was so impressed that I bought it for use on my Ipad.I may have mis-read something but the only issue that I have from one of his suggestions is to cover meats (with aluminum foil) which are being smoked. If so, foil will block the smoke. Maybe I made a mistake. But this is a great book.Thanks Myron

Chef here. I made the only sauce you’ll ever need and it’s a paste. I made the brisket. I made the pork. I feel like this was written by someone who didn’t want to share his recipes or by some third party that had no idea what they were doing. Save your money. What a joke.

This is a good cook book. It has clear explanations and recipes that are simple. All you need to add is your own diligence in following instructions.I've seen Mixon on TV and he likes to come across as a jerk - full of attitude and bluster. It interferes with the communication and that load of posturing and B.S.is absent from the book. I wonder if in "real life" he is actually a normal guy who was encouraged by program producers to act like a jerk.I have several weekend sessions planned for my smoker and will be using this cookbook.

I haven't had a chance to try a lot of the recipes in here yet, I'm still working on perfecting the basics. However, I could recommend this book for his rub recipes alone. I now make my own rubs for BBQ and it has made a tremendous difference in flavor profiles. The reason I enjoy this book so much is because it is intended for back yard BBQ'ers and has simple, easy to follow recipes you can cook any night of the week. If you are looking for competition secrets, this isn't the book for you.I'm still eager to try out some of the other recipes, but that will come in time, there are only so many BBQs I can squeeze into a week.

Myron knows his barbecue and I like the recipes. I bought another book by a different barbecue expert to get all of the recipes I wanted. Need a book just for venison.
