A fuller review to come, hopefully on Small Things Considered, but I received a copy of this from the creator and really enjoyed it. The illustrations throughout are detailed and evocative, in a style just like the cover's. The text manages to introduce a really complex symbiotic relationship in relatively simple terms. In some cases this includes breaking info down into real simple terms or an analogy. But in other parts it doesn't avoid all the jargon of biology or words that may be unfamiliar to a child. Nonetheless I think it would work with an inquisitive older child and a parent that would read it along and help explain. The story is divided into two parts, the first from the point of view of the Vibrio bacteria and the second from the point of view of the squid, tying everything together in showing how the light produced by the bacteria is beneficial to the squid's survival. A final section, still superbly illustrated, goes into much greater detail with the science with material suitable for an older child or even someone into high school age.

The book is truly unique.I bought a copy from the publisher's website and found the book to be a beautiful combination of storytelling, watercolour illustration and rich scientific content.I can't recommend the book highly enough for all lovers of science and nature - both children and adults alike!

I don't read a lot of YA that isn't recommended to me by others because I tend to dislike a large amount of the common tropes that seem to be in every YA novel ever.I wish this one had been different. Let me start by saying that the actual prose was solid, it was simple but it wasn't awkward or clunky. I never felt that the narration was talking down to the reader or treating them like they were stupid. I also found myself not hating Kricket, even if I felt like the author betrayed her more often than she helped. I love the idea of tackling the difficulties of being a kid who grew up in the pathetic excuse of a 'foster' system, and having a biracial lead could have been so powerful. Kricket is smart and ferocious, she doesn't like being used and often lets her independence get in the way. She is treated with a bit of special snowflake syndrome - I'm willing to look over it since she had actual faults and most of the 'special' was forced onto her by others (but really platinum blondes aren't really that rare, 5'10" is not short by any average, the college she was looking at offers scholarships and housing for foster kids and I'll get to the most beautiful thing in a bit) - but I felt like she had an honestly solid base character. I don't mind female characters who are tough and self dependent especially when it gets them into trouble when it needs to.That said, for whatever horrible reason the author decided that it was completely okay to oversexualise Kricket to an absurdly creepy point. The only men who weren't interested in her were gay. Everyone else wanted a piece of her because she was just so beautiful they just couldn't help themselves. No one had any difficulty touching her - even after the author stated in lore that touching was something that was not acceptable between casual friends or with strangers. What's worse is when the boys weren't fighting over her bra and panties, they were using magical x-ray glasses to scan for her virginity. I can't even begin to talk about how creepy and wrong it is and how Kricket feels violated but it's instantly dropped and forgotten. I don't even know where to start my rant on this, because this is aimed at TEENAGE GIRLS. Why are we still writing and pretending like there is any way to tell if someone is a virgin or not?? Why are we still acting like it's okay to attach any value to something so pointless, and why do we insist on writing fantasy that is so incredibly sexist? I was beyond disgusted that it was brought up more than once and held over her head, it's beyond gross. On top of this, there is this suffocating romance that should not have even been included. The lead male Trey pulls her around, forces her gaze, continuously reminds her that she's small and weak and female and she needs a man to protect her (a sentiment that is echoed by every other male around her). He is constantly yelling at her and derailing her, invalidating the way she thinks and speaks because it's not 'ladylike'. He kidnaps her and then spends the first half of the book saying he isn't and telling her that the other side were the ones who were going to hold her prisoner. His side was just going to punish her. He gets ridiculously over protective of her almost instantly, and at SEVERAL points he strips her down while she's unconscious. His role in the plot to be a man who protects invalidates Kricket's own characterization at several points and honestly, there is no sense in writing them into a romance. What little plot there was could have been actually interesting, a little typical but it could have been so much more than it was. This book felt like a set up but it did very little world building aside from a few info dumps every few chapters. So much of the plot was interrupted by Kricket being treated like a piece of meat for literally every male character in the book. The universe could have been cool, some cross between Victorian and the ultra modern but it was so heavy in archaic sexism that there was never any time to explore it.I'm too frustrated to even go on at this point. The author did a terrible job at writing what could have been a really amazing book. I am so sick of YA authors falling back on age old tropes that need to die out already, they are overdone and frankly disgusting. I am so sick of seeing fantasy and scifi universes being riddled with sexism, especially with female leads. It's been done to death and frankly I don't see why it's included. Kricket literally has magical hair and powers but women in the universe are just objects to be married. If this book had spent more time on the plot and honest character developments and had fought against typical YA tropes it would have been so much better.

*I received a free copy of this title in a Goodreads giveaway. All opinions given here are my own*I didn't love this book, but I didn't hate it. I enjoyed that Kricket was a foster child from a harder place than many people ever experience, but I thought that could have translated better into who she was as a person. This could have developed into a very interesting and character driven coming of age story, but it just didn't quite manifest.Kricket's inner monologue indicated that she had hardened her heart, but she didn't seem all that hard-hearted to me, as she started to trust her captors far too easily. As a foster parent myself, perhaps I'm just more familiar with the trust issues these kids have and the attachment issues that follow, so it was very disconnected for me. Also, her naivete was unsettling. She would not have been that ignorant of how to play games she faced in her "home world." Foster children are survivors, and while she might have not known the details and specifics of the games being played, there is most often a well honed knowledge of how to play them.I did not like the male-domination that drove the majority of this book. While Kricket herself seemed to be a feminist, as the reader, I could never quite tell when her feminism would manifest and when she would play the victim in need of saving.Another aspect that I didn't quite understand was the complete fascination with her body. Kricket's body is lusted after constantly. And she is naked more than once in the presence of her love interest, but, perhaps because it is a YA novel and not an adult novel nothing happens. Most concerning for me (especially for an audience of young female readers) is that one of these times she actually falls asleep fully dressed in the arms of her love interest and awakens completely naked and lying next to him in bed. He is fully dressed, but explains that he cut her clothes off because it "...looked uncomfortable." This reeks of taking advantage of a sleeping woman and all my hackles rose, but Kricket is not appalled or offended or scared...Instead,"Was it hot?" I ask between kisses. "Cutting it off me?"Are you kidding me?!?! Was this supposed to develop sexual tension? Yuck...that whole scene. Yuck.Overall, I didn't hate the story. I might read more in the series, but I won't search it out. If I come down to needing something to read and there aren't any better options available in the library, I may pick up the second book...we'll just have to see.For conservative readers: See above...

The Kricket series (Under Different Stars, Sea of Stars, and Darken the Stars) is the perfect blend of dystopia, science fiction, YA love, and engaging story telling. The characters are believable, imperfect but gifted. They evolve throughout the series through satisfying plot points (warring factions believing a prophesied outcome and unforgiving family dynamics) and lyrical vulnerability (from Kricket "I’m stone, remember? Nothing touches me.” It’s not true. I have a paper heart and he has written notes all over it... and from Trey "I’ve said too much. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I know that I should’ve softened that. I could’ve made something up or omitted parts and made it a nicer version of the truth, but I didn’t want to; I want her to know me for who I am. I don’t want her pity. I just want acceptance. This is my truth. I have entrusted her with it. Now I want to see what she does with it."). The villain, Koyn, pursues Kricket with a ferocious, all-consuming intensity that recalls the futility of a moth refusing a flame (“There’ll be no martyrs here, Kricket. I’ll tear your heart off your sleeve and bury it deep in my chest. Your savage heart will beat for me. Run if you think you can—I’ll hunt you down.”). I had to keep reminding myself that I was attracted to a madman. Talk about incredible character breadth. This is one love triangle I will not forget. The ending has driven a number of frustrated reader to start an online petition begging the author to write a fourth book. I found it incredibly refreshing and brave. It is not a simplistic happily ever after (HEA). Given Kricket’s tumultuous journey and the impossible decisions she faced, I would have found a HEA trite and disappointing. Incredible series well worth a read.

Seasons of Mist shows off everything I could have asked for in this series. In the first chapter, along with the best artwork the series has had to date, we get to meet two more of Morpheus's family: the oddball Delirium, and the intimidating Destiny. Neither of these characters disappoint. The book goes on to bring forth a huge collection of mythological figures the world over. Gaiman brings all of these characters together seamlessly. My only complaint about the book is that the ending wasn't quite satisfactory to me. However, most of the people I have talked to about the book disagree, so there is a good chance you will too.

Like many young boys I read comics as a child. Spiderman and Silver Surfer were my favorites and I still enjoy dusting off an old Marvel from time to time. When I got to college many of my brothers were passing around the old president's copy of Watchmen and I was floored by how great comics could be. I made my way through many other Alan Moore works finding, with a great deal of surprise, that I rather linked Swamp Thing which brought me to Neil Gaiman. Knew the name but was unfamiliar with his work. Started in on Sandman. The first three volumes were quite good and I could see why Gaiman was mentioned along with Moore as being the gold standard. Then I read volume 4. The layers upon layers of mythology, the masterful building of suspense. this is quite simply the best comic book I have ever read (excepting for Maus, which is in a separate category. I mean, yeah it's a comic, but...if you have read it you know of which I am trying to speak. If you haven't read it do so). The third issue I nearly applauded when I finished it. My biggest fear having just finished this volume is that all other books, comic or otherwise, will be a disappointment. Oh well. The Dark Knight Rises was no Dark Knight but it was still rather well done. Fingers crossed though that Neil could somehow replicate this extraordinary tale in volume 5!

Gaiman’s Sandman as a whole is a masterpiece of storytelling. At times sublime and clever at times baffling but always thought provoking.I originally read it as the monthly book but it really was meant to be read in volumes like this. I think this one is my favorite of the series. I’m probably biased due to being a huge fan of the Lucifer spin off by Mike Carey. Without this story that one would not have been told. Either way this series stands the test of time better than most comics ever could.

In these days of everything having to be genre specific, style specific, demographic specific - specify your target audience, specify one linear storyline and ram your writing right down people's throats for 'em, Neil Gaiman is a so refreshing. He's having a little bit of everything with The Sandman series. You're going to see everything form satire to a brilliantly weaved mythology, to social cometary, to fairy tale telling, to suspense, to horror, to romance, to literary critique, form, and analysis - and all it delivered bound and wrapped, with a punch in the nose. And what I like best personally is that out of all the malfeasant behaviors in the world that Gaiman goes after, snobbery is the the most constant and vile. He amps it up so well and I just think you're just going to love The Sandman no mater what kind of stuff you usually read. But definitely do yourself a favor and read these in order. It's a long and amazing journey you don't want to miss.

As someone who came into the Sandman party a few decades late, I must say that this volume is a great return to form for the series as a whole. The previous volume, Dream Country, felt more like set-up for future story lines (one of which pays off in this volume), while this one feels more like the first volume in the sense that it expands upon the lore and provides fantastic character development. I honestly did not think that I would find a sequence of events that would rival the abstract battle between Morpheus and the demon in the first volume, but nearly everything in this volume rivals that scene, from Lucifer's and Morpheus' interactions to Morpheus playing host to the widest array of mythological beings I have seen outside of a Marvel or DC book (and even then, the characters are NOTHING like the aforementioned companies' iterations).Fantastic art and intriguing writing both help to make this volume of the Sandman one to be remembered for a good long while.

I liked how this volume let the reader look at Lucifer and hell in a new way, posing a theory that hell is not"miserable" but more of what you want it to be.However, got this because I thought Death would be in it more and she is not, so I am a little disappointed (not the author or seller's fault just something I read wrong). Plus many people quote this as their favorite Sandman comic. Also, personally I like Gaiman's "Preludes" volume a lot more for the characters, artwork, and abstract story.Iconic volume though.

Ah, the fun that is the logical quagmire that is Hell—a place of damnation but nonetheless necessary in the good-evil model of the world. Gaiman takes his Sandman through the acrobatics of necessary evil in order for there to be good and gets to stretch his mythological legs in the process, as all kinds of pantheons come groveling to Sandman now that he has a key to Hell to bestow, since Lucifer has retired...

My favorite volume yet in Gaiman's 'The Sandman'. Thus far The Sandman has been a series of stories, rather than one cohesive one (although certain events from prior volumes are referenced in this one). I have heard that from this point onward the story does get a bit more cohesive, maybe it does, we will see, but as far as a complete story this was undoubtedly the best one yet. Along with Morpheus were are treated with another appearance by Lucifer in this volume. Not just Lucifer but Odin, Loki, Thor, Anubis, Bast, even Chaos itself graces these pages. Sound interesting? It is. Read it.

I am a very fussy reader. I ordered several books about Egyptian history in preparation for a trip to Cairo. I made it about half way through Amitav Gosh's In an Antique Land with interested starts and long lapses between readings until I gave up. I looked through Traveling Through Egypt from 450 BC to the Twentieth Century, an interesting collection of short excerpts of travel writing across gender, time and culture; however the print was too small and the excerpts too choppy to really grab me and pull me in. I was desperate to find a book which would capture a sense of Cairo as a place.I was saved by Maria Golia and her exquisitely written book Cairo: City of Sand. From the first paragraph which describes an apocalyptic scene which turns out to be a sandstorm to the last paragraph which praises the enduring quality of all great cities, especially Cairo.Reading along with Golia allows one to peer into corners of the city known only to native Cairenes from a women's day at a spa, to ordering a MacFalafel at an Egyptian MacDonalds, to attempting to cross a busy street in deafening traffic so close that it brushes one's clothing as it passes, to rooftop gardens and livestock pens, and to a wedding celebration. Through Golia's pen one can hear the cacophony of Cairo, smell the myriad aromas of a host of ethic cuisines, see the dingy squatters settlement and the Mamluk mosque, and feel the scorching blast of a sandstorm. The book is organized in an interesting way beginning with a chapter called "Vanishing Point" which explores daily life in Cairo by looking at diminishing resources such as housing and water as well as growth in population and pollution. The next chapter, "Artifice and Edifice," examines Cairene's history through buildings from its days as a tent encampment through the modern age and its satellite communities. The chapter titled "Guests" explores Cairo's relationship with its visitors from Napoleonic French to Saudi princes who behave badly and the impact of these guests on Cairene culture. The love of language and relationship building is featured in "Listening" and "Ensemble" probes the mazag - the cultural melange that is Cairo. The treasure of intimate glimpses into this city of 17 million is only surpassed by Golia's gift of language. Golia manages to capture the complexities of Cairo through the juxtaposition of images: "Bats gorge on Nile mosquitoes, which are languorous and menacing, an airbourne version of the Portuguese men o'war" (43). She uses metaphors to capture the reader's attention and to create humor: "Blackouts are lapses in the municipal attention span" ( 39). Using vivid imagery and lyrical language Golia brings Cairo alive.I must say that prior to reading this book, my feelings about going to Cairo were an blend of 80% anxiety with 20% excited anticipation. Now that I have vicariously been to Cairo, I now feel mostly excited anticipation.

I learned more from reading this book, over a recent visit, than from living in Cairo for five years and then visiting over a period of twenty. While Max Rodenbeck and others have written decent histories of the city, this is a truly amazing work -- both history and remarkably detailed and with rich philosophical insights not only about the thinking of latter day Cairenes but even about the motivations of the Western tourists who visit Egypt. Golia's writing is funny, her style sweeping, and her conclusions inevitably sensible. Even the photos are good. Buy this book!

I was a tourist in Egypt as a teenager (I'm from Boston/NYC) for the pyramids and ancient Egypt. During that trip, I really fell in love with Cairo, but it was the first time I had been anywhere. Was it just the thrill? 30 years later, at 50, I re-visited Egypt with my husband and two teenage children. I thought - is Cairo how I remember? I searched books, and this was the best! It captures the spirit of Cairenes, the commeraderie, the poverty, the richness, the history, the spirit. I read it right before I went and I'm glad I did.I recommend this book for anyone who wants to feel the pulse of Cairo before they visit, or if they will never visit at all. Cairo and this author are wonderful. Thank you Maria.

Wonderful and insightful view from a brilliant lady.

enjoyed whenever moving to next chapters.

I lived in Cairo, Egypt for three years in the early 1990s...and since then in Jordan, where I found this book on sale in a local shop. I didn't know the author and didn't expect anything special. Reading this book was a kind of revelation - it's the first time I've recognized the Cairo I knew and loved described with such affection, honesty and authenticity. In hindsight from the events of Jan - Feb 2011, Golia made many prescient observations and predictions. Her book and its understanding of how Cairo works because of Cairenes and their insistence on hanging in there together reminds me of the beautiful film by Yusef Chahin - "Cairo Illuminated by Her People" - which was received with much embarassment and criticism among well-heeled Egyptians because it showed some of the poorest and most neglected parts of the city without apology. What they missed is the enormous love with which people and neighborhoods were shot by the film maker and their solidarity which illluminates the film. Same can be said for Golia's book. I looked up her more recent articles from Cairo - printed in The New Internationalist and its website....worth reading. This goes on my "precious books" shelf. Highly recommended.

This is a lovely and highly informative book. Maria Golia's prose is very readable and equally delightful, her knowledge of Cairo, its people and its history is comprehensive. She loves the city. She doesn't patronize it.Minor corrections, to an otherwise very accurate book, are onPage 35, the name of the Egyptian actor Adel IMAM is given as Adel IMAN, twice.Page 85, the words for 'cemeteries' (plural) and 'dust' (single) in colloquial Egyptian dialect are 'TOE-rub' (the stress on the first syllable) and 'tor-AAb' (the stress is on the second), respectively. It's tempting to argue that they derive from the same three-letter semetic root, but as they stand, they are pronounced differently. Finally, I want to point out that there is a number of short "Letters from Cairo" (published in 'The New Internationalist') by, and an NPR interview (from early 2003) with M Golia available on the web. All highly recommended.

As a prototype designer, he created semi-automated rapid cooling devices with medical applications, and air-deployable equipment for first responders. He was the sole author of four mathematical-graphics software packages, and has been fascinated by electronics since he put together a telephone answering machine from a tape recorder and military-surplus relays at age 15. Truly outstanding for beginners or those who have been away from electronics for a long time. The author does an excellent job of providing an intuitive understanding of each of the components under discussion. I also have a number of electronic books that were written by academics for academics and they are largely useless. I intend to acquire copies of all of the author's books; the only other author that I have followed in this manner is Forrest Mims.

An excellent follow-on to Make: Electronics! I've tried to learn electronics a number of times over the years, and each time I made it a little farther before bogging down. Make Electronics was my latest attempt, and this time I think I'm getting it! The explanations are clear, the order of subjects makes perfect sense, only as much theory and math as are absolutely required are used, and the pictures and diagrams are clearly laid out with the reasons why specific symbols, colors, etc. were selected are explained. Charles Platt clearly is a master of the subject, and is very capable of explaining the subject material. Based on my prior attempts, about half of what was in Make: Electronics was review for me, but Make: More Electronics is mostly new, and mostly things that I just didn't get in the past, but I'm understanding it now due to the same clear, well ordered explanations as in the prior book. This one picks up where Make: Electronics left off, and continues into more complex areas, such as AC circuits and OpAmps, with some fun and interesting projects. The explanations of how to approach a design are especially useful...you can't just copy other's designs forever! If you want to learn electronics, you won't go wrong with Make: Electronics, followed by Make: More Electronics. The set of three parts encyclopedias that Mr. Platt has also published are well worth a look as well. These aren't tutorials, like Make: Electronics and Make: More Electronics, but they aren't simple catalogs of parts either...they go into the theory, variations, uses, and cautions for a host of electronics parts from transformers, to transistors, and connectors. Based on my reading of these books, I'd certainly want to take a look at anything else Mr. Platt produces!

A good addition to a library for the novice moving toward intermediate level in basic electronics. Easy to understand with sufficient detail that any interested person can learn the what and whys of fundamental electronic circuits and their applications.

In this book, you will find that it provides the essential information as to what a particular component is, how it is used, and what to expect from it. It is extremely easy to look up any component within the realm of the volume. Instead of having to go to a computer or potable device each time, I find it much easier to go to this book first.

Second book by Platt and I have been happy with both writing style and content. This is perfect for working through material with younger students and a great starter or refresher for adult students.I wouldn't hesitate to pick up any of the electronic books written by Platt.

This book is nice, but one must be patient and pay close attention to part values when building the circuits, just be patient and it will pay off.

This book is the natural Vol II carryover of Vol. I, Make: Electronics. Same clear diagrams and explanations. Again, you can teach yourself how elementary electronic circuits work.

I purchased this (vol.2) as a follow up to the first edition. This is great as a learning tool, or just satisfying a curiosity. I recommend it.
