I liked the book overall. I can't say it was a good read though.. A dramatic fall from grace ...not really ! Would I buy it again ? Probably not . Not to steal the thunder of the book..but it was slow reading ...and dry. Shoeless Joe was not a victim , but he was a victim of a poor education mostly which profoundly weakened the general character of the ballplayer he was...Not a tragedy but a OH , WELL ...life's missed opportunity ! The book itself is well documented and mostly an easy read...with a lot research garnered from the sports and town paper headlines.

This isn't the first biography of Joe Jackson but I believe it is the one that is most complete. Author Tim Hornbaker includes a great deal of information regarding Jackson's career with the Cleveland Indians and it isn't until approximately page 150 that the book deals with the birth of the Black Sox conspiracy. Hornbaker realizes that much of this scandal is still not known nor probably ever will be. What was Jackson's role in this fiasco? He was guilty. He took $5,000.00 and wondered where the other $15,000.00 was that he was promised. He was the leading hitter in the series and may have played to win but he did admit his guilt and then recanted his confession. Yes, Jackson was naive and was sucked into the scandal by Arnold "Chick" Gandil who planned to retire at the end of the year anyway and wanted to supplement his retirement with a nice nest egg from the gamblers. We are left to wonder what would Jackson's future have been had the Indians not been strapped for cash and needed to deal Jackson away. It's too bad he was dealt to the Pale Hose, a team made up of separate cliques. Maybe things would have been changed had there not been a festering feud between Sox' owner Charles Comiskey and American League President Ban Johnson.I have two letters I received from J. G. Taylor Spink, publisher of The Sporting News and one of the official scorers of the 1919 World Series and a personal friend of Joe Jackson. Spink states, "They were all guilty."Author Hornbaker has written very interesting books on White Sox owner Charles Comiskey and Ty Cobb and he has added another worthyaddition to anyone's baseball library with this volume on Joe Jackson. The book contains sixteen pages of photographs many of which I haven't seen before.

Very enjoyable read about an almost mythical sports figure. Fall from Grace chronicles the life of Shoeless Joe Jackson, presenting a fair and balanced examination of his career and his culpability in the Black Sox Scandal. The writing style is compact and efficient, and the book is thoroughly researched and footnoted. In some stretches it reads more like a dissertation than traditional sports narrative, but while it doesn't deliver the flavor of the era like Ritter's The Glory of Their Times, it is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

I played baseball as a kid. I understand the game. I loved baseball. I still love watching baseball. I am a Chicago Cubs fan, so 2016 was a momentous year for me. I now live in Greenville, South Carolina after living my entire life in Iowa. Anyone who knows baseball knows that the famous Shoeless Joe Jackson was born, grew up, and lived most of his life in Greenville. As an avid baseball fan, I have always been fascinated by the 1919 Chicago White Sox World Series scandal which led to the terms "Black Sox" and "8 Men Out." So I thought it was about time that I read a well-researched book about the "fixing" of that World Series and Shoeless Joe Jackson's association with the events which have kept him out of Cooperstown. Tim Hornbaker did a masterful job of holding my attention from start-to-finish. This "dead ball" era of baseball included some of the greatest men to ever play the game of baseball: Jackson, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner. Shoeless Joe's regular season statistics alone qualified him for the Hall of Fame, but, unfortunately, he was caught up in a dishonorable, illegal situation; even if he maintained his innocence until his death in 1951, the bottom line was that he suffered the natural, logical, and tragic consequences of that association. In the scandal's best light, he was naive and foolish; in the worst, dishonorable, greedy, and narcissistic. I give him the benefit of the doubt. After reading Hornbaker's book, I would conclude he was a kind, thoughtful, loving man who unfortunately got caught up in a mess which forever stained his baseball reputation. If you love baseball and an excellently-documented real-life thriller, I would encourage you to read FALL FROM GRACE: THE TRUTH AND TRAGEDY OF SHOELESS JOE JACKSON.

I first heard about Shoeless Joe Jackson when I was a boy and over the years would hear his name mentioned from time to time. The "Field of Dreams" movie brought the name back again. Recently, I watched the movie again and it made me curious so I looked up books on him and this seemed the best. It was a good read and very interesting. I had no idea that he was as great a ballplayer as he was. To be on a par with Ty Cobb and to have influenced the likes of Babe Ruth is impressive. So is his .356 lifetime batting average. He was an interesting character off the field, too. This book covers so many facets of Jackson's life. Knowing his stats in baseball and his impact on the game and the company he kept made it all the more tragic that he was banned from the game. One can only imagine what he could have accomplished, given a full career. I was disappointed in a sense and held back a star because I expected the book to present facts that exonerated Jackson regarding the 1919 World Series fix. Evidence on both sides is presented. Exoneration could not get back the career Jackson missed but it could have him recognized by Cooperstown. It's a shame that a player of his abilities and achievements is remembered more for one ill-advised act than for the years of productivity on the field.

This book is fantastic. Whether you are a baseball fan or historian you will enjoy this well written documentation of one of baseball's greatest.

Very quick delivery and the book is a good read.w

We ordered the Alice in Wonderland with the green leather cover. I thought it was difficult to tell which reviews went with which versions. I'm really glad we grabbed this version, the cover (despite the ugly green color) is quite beautiful with embossed lettering and shiny red roses and border. The edge of the pages are golden, there is a red ribbon for marking your page. All of the original artwork is presented, and the page layouts are perfect. The front and back cover have a vivid full color painting of the tea party. If you are looking for a high quality version of the book, I couldn't recommend this one more. The size is medium. It is half way between the size of a paperback and a hard cover text book.

This review is for the RED "hardcover" and I will post pictures because when I read reviews prior to purchase I was super confused and had no idea which book the reviews were about.First, the cover is gorgeous but it's not "hardcover" (see photo). It's a lovely soft cover, covered with leather which is partially embossed; the gold lettering appears to be painted on. The back cover is just as well made and embossed as well.Second, this is the full version of both stories, not an "abridged" version. The generous illustrations are beautifully done.I can't believe this book is only $10!I hope my review helps!

I had a difficult time determing which version was being reviewed in many of these reviews, so I am specifically reviewing the version that is illustrated by Anna Bond. This is a great version to use with younger kids- it has larger print and illustrations on almost every page. If you want to purchase accompanying audio to listen with, just buy the unabridged version and it should be a match.

This is incredible! Absolutely beautiful.. Extended my expectations!! I have seriously never seen a more beautiful book! The detail is awesome and even the story itself is from the original Lewis Carroll version. Not only is each page a beautiful pop up.. But each page has mini fold out pages with more pop up artwork. This will be a keepsake for our family. SO glad I bought this and will look at buying others!

I loathe when Amazon lumps the reviews of different books together so this is for the hardcover version illustrated by Charles Santore. The cover is beautiful with an older looking cover and the color illustration of Alice falling. The sketches throughout the book are in black and white. The pages are thick and sturdy but cut roughly on the sides. The font is a great size and spacing and on a very white background. I hate when they use a small print and tight spacing on older books. The sketches are beautifully done and do a wonderful job of bringing Alice and the story to life. They do pale in comparison to the illustrated versions but unfortunately that edition is abridged. I had never read the story before so I was not aware of the differences between Alice’s Adventures Underground and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but there are many. This book for example does not have the chapter on the Mad Tea Party. That and other parts would be added in to the story so if that’s the version you are interested in than this is not the version for you.

I don't always like annotated editions, but I bought this one because both stories were included and it retains all of the original illustrations like the ones I remember reading as a child. Having said that, I enjoyed the illustrations by other artists included for historical context. Some of them are quite stunning, in fact. The thing I hate about annotated editions is the way the annotations create visual "clutter." Yes, that is the case here as well. I really have to force my slightly OCD-like mind to ignore that and concentrate on the text of the story. However, as a history buff, I enjoy reading the annotations from a historical perspective. It's a big book, so if you enjoy a hefty hardcover, this is the one for you.

This review is specifically for the penguin hardcover cloth-bound classics edition (white with pink flamingos)!Naturally, the tale of Alice in Wonderland (told in two books; Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) is definitely a fun, unique tale that appeals to children and adults alike, so of course I wanted to own a quality copy of it! I like how this edition contains both books and is hardcover with a simple cover design that looks timeless and elegant on my bookshelf. The book is full of useful notes and information in edition to having the tale; plus it contains the classic illustrations too! The paper is very high quality, the printing very attractive, and overall it was well worth the $10 I spent on it. I thought it was such an attractive edition that I bought one for my sister, who is a collector of the various editions of this tale. I've no complaints except that I don't really care for how rough the fabric is; it's not very nice to hold in your bare hands in my opinion, and it makes a sound when it's placed on the shelf next to other cloth-bound hardcovers from the penguin classics series, so those are two things to keep in mind. I personally would have preferred either a softer fabric or for the books to have been bound in hard-backed pleather.

this book as regards the destructive habit of anger is the only one that has ever made a meaningful difference in my life. the binding is horrible and will fall apart (mine is held together with clothes pins and rubber bands) but the content if practiced could change your life. my method has been to read a couple pages, write down the most salient point i can extract 5 times, walk around the house for five minutes memorizing that point word for word (as i toss a baseball in the air), and then meditate for 15 minutes on those words (critical analysis style). i have a notebook dedicated to these meditations with dates written in the margin. i don't consider myself a Buddhist but the logic presented here has served to educate my mind and heart."hatred is the ultimate enemy. this feeling not only destroys my immediate calmness and peace of mind, but it also throws me into a state of confusion." sometimes my meditations are nearly word for word from this book, sometimes they are my own analysis.i give this book as a gift to people whom i believe will use it.

I'm an angry person by nature. He has a way of breaking those emotions down, dissect them so you can see the underlining causes. I highly recommend.

It's surprising how simple I thought practicing "patience" would be. But as the book indicates,"there is something very biological within our body that obstructs us from trying to get out of that bondage, almost like something in-built, a sort of lethargy or something which makes it heavy. This also obstructs our clarity of mind."Reading this book provided me with clear methods in obtaining patience and tolerance, along as reasons to why we respond the way we do. I enjoyed the balance provided between two opposite extremes and their relevance. I look forward to practicing a harmonized approach to grounding my emotions and having a realistic view of my presence, in the moment, based on facts rather than false perceptions.

The Dalai Lama has great skills in reaching out to others and is one of our greatest practitioners of compassion for others. He is surrounded by talented writers and translators who are themselves capable of great compassion and great teaching. Even if you do not think you have a problem with anger, and that others do, buy this book and read it first - it will grace your life - before passing it on to others who you think might need it more.

First, I'll say that I really enjoyed this book, and it was very helpful as I tackled anger around various issues I was dealing with (hence the 5 stars). One word of "caution", though, is that if you are used to many of the Dalai Lama's other books, you are probably used to the very conversational, almost simplistic, descriptions he gives of the subject matter, which makes those books very accessible and, I think, very effective at exposing a broader audience to Buddhist ideas. This book is not like those, and in this you can really get a glimpse of the theological scholar side of the Dalai Lama. The text is fairly dense, and somewhat difficult to understand unless you have a pretty good understanding of Buddhist principles. I had to go brush up on those and come back to this book to really get through it. If you've only read The Art of Happiness or How to See Yourself as You Really Are then this may be a bit overwhelming and frustrating. To get up to speed, I'd recommend Buddhism for Beginners followed by The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching: Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, and Liberation.

I can honestly say that this book is second only to the Dhammapada for me in significance. I learned so much from this book on dealing with issues of anger and jealousy and highly recommend it to any one who is seeking words of wisdom and a path for dealing with their own anger and personal issues. The only way for this book to really work for you is to open up to what is being said and follow. Realizing that patience is the key in overcoming anger is the fundamental. When dealing with people or situations that anger you because of the way that person is behaving is simply a test.I had an experience where I was in a hospital and told to use a phone to contact one part of the hospital. When I went to use it some staff member who likely did not like the way I looked informed me that I shouldn't be using that phone and that I should go to another location not far away and use that phone instead because Hospital staff used this one. The sign by this phone clearly stated that this is the one I was to use. Rather than getting angry with this person and ignoring her and using the phone blatantly in her presence I smiled and agreed to use the other phone even though there was no other reason to do so except to put this person at ease. The other phone worked perfectly well as it turned out. At the time this occurred I thought on what I learned from this book and realized that anger at this person is not necessary and to lash back would have only worsened the situation. I looked for the positive and followed it and sure enough there were no problems.Everyone could learn from this book only if they take to heart what is being said. I highly recommend it. Definite 5+ stars.

Not quite done reading it yet, I like how it opens your mind up to different ways of looking at people and yourself. I found it to be repetitive at some points...yet it's done for a reason. You tend to remember what he is talking about, if you are having issues with other people or yourself I suggest picking it up and adapting it to your lifestyle. I am about a year and half into praticing, and found it to be great at making life more open and enjoyable. You would be surprised at what things you have overlooked and people you may have hurt. It will change your views for the better, get this book.

Amazon.com Review

There was once a time when words like étouffée, tasso, and jambalaya were hardly known outside of the Cajun and Creole communities of Louisiana. Then along came Chef Paul Prudhomme, and all of that changed. Big enough to be his own force of nature, Prudhomme all but single-handedly turned Cajun cooking into a national food trend, changing forever the way many a cook thinks about spicing food. And Chef Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Kitchen was the book that made it happen. But guess what? It's still happening, and so is the book! Anyone looking for a primer on Cajun cooking need look no farther. Chef Paul takes the reader by the hand and opens up a world that includes four kinds of roux, Jalapeno and Cheese Rolls, Shrimp Étouffée, and the to-die-for Cajun Meatloaf. Good old-fashioned Red Beans and Rice and Sweet Potato Pecan Pie are not forgotten either. Chef Paul tested all of his recipes in a home kitchen using common culinary tools--no professional equipment needed here. These are recipes that are high in spice, so remember to have a large vat of water on hand! --Schuyler Ingle

We purchased this book in the late 1980's. Our copy has long been without its dust cover. Its pages are dog eared and stained. It is by far the most used cookbook in our considerable cookbook library. Some of our favorites include Cajun Shepard's Pie, Dirty Rice, Blackened Redfish, Shrimp creole, Chicken Etouffee, Shrimp Etouffee, all the gumbos (gumbo as a way of cooking), Very Hot Cajun Sauce for Beef. It's true that it has fewer photos than cookbooks published today - but this book was published in 1984 when photos were much more expensive and hard to do. We've never needed them to produce incredible dishes from this book. At least in our early copy, the actual spice mixtures are spelled out for every recipe and this has been a great help. This book is absolutely unique. We have multiple other "Cajun" and "Creole" cookbooks, but none comes close to this one.

Excellent dishes and so very simple! Nothing in here is complicated at all, but the results are spectacular. Beginner cooks can make a masterpiece. I've had this for years and years, and the pages are beginning to fall out. I give this book as a gift to all of my American friends who come to visit and then get excited about our Louisiana cooking. We often have guests from out of state and we pull a couch into the kitchen and make an evening of enjoying the company and savoring the aroma while preparing the meal. Even the kids can't resist the smell coming out of the kitchen and they spend the evening watching the preperations, so our guests often have a good family evening together when we pull this book off of the shelf. These recipes will soon become family favorites even if you don't live in Louisiana.

I have hundreds of cookbooks but none more used than this one. I buy the cheap used books and give this one away all the time. Its the kind of cookbook that you just sit down and read from cover to cover. Even when I read a recipe I will never make I still learn something about cooking in doing so. I've served his recipes to many non-American friends and never found a person who didn't love it. I'm no chef but Paul will make you look like one by just doing what he says.

Love this cookbook, it is the best and easiest Cajun cooking book around for authentic flavor of Louisiana.. Chef Paul is the best and his dishes although not low fat, his flavor combinations cannot be beat in my eyes. .

Bought my first copy when I got married in 1985. As a very poor student and nascent cook, Paul taught me how to put my foot in it and go! Bought a second copy a few years back to have at the beach as well. Absolutely spectacular cookbook for those who have or just love Southern garden staples and seafood. Perhaps because it was my first, this is my favorite of Paul Prudhomme's cookbooks. After all these years and cooking without other folks' recipes, it is still my favorite to refer to for Louisiana cooking. All time classic.

You will wear out this book until it falls to pieces and the food stained remnants no longer resemble a book. I'm on my third copy and have taken to re-writing them on paper for kitchen use. Many other reviewers have stated this, but it can't be said enough - follow the directions exactly, no matter how incredulous you may be (and on some recipes you will be). It always works out. THAT SAID, there are a few recipes that to my tastes (and probably 99% of other people on this Earth) that have far too much oil. I noted them - well, at least the ones I've tried - at the bottom of my review.Although I grew up in New Orleans and continue to live there, my parents passed no cooking skills on to me worth mentioning, as they, like most New Orleanians who are not professional cooks, only knew how to make a few things well and never wrote anything down. After a few years of being unsuccessful learning to cook from books that were not meant for learners, I finally bought this one in the early 1990's. This book will teach you how to cook, so long as you let it. Follow the directions. No substitutions. The amount of work that went into testing these recipes must have been daunting, especially with regard to seasoning. This book isn't just for Gulf South dwellers. There are a great many recipes here that can be made anywhere in the world; for the seafood oriented ones, you're probably out of luck.Another note: please do use parboiled rice in Louisiana dishes. Stop calling it "processed" - it isn't any more processed than any other rice. All it means is that the husk has been blown off with steam rather than mechanical threshing. It retains the bran this way and the grains make perfect al dente rice. I personally like Zatarain's, but any will do.Some of my personal favorites -Crawfish Etoufée - this version is made with roux, which is not a common way to make it in New Orleans. It's one of those you think couldn't possibly turn out right, but it is sublime. This was my favorite dish in the world as a child and continues to be in my top ten! This is the best version I've ever tasted.Turtle Soup - One of the best recipes in this book, and the best turtle soup I've ever had (and I've eaten plenty of turtle soups around town).Shrimp Diane - shrimp and butter with mushrooms. Delicious over pasta.Barbecued Shrimp - Whole, head on shrimp broiled in butter with black pepper, rosemary, etc. Remember to snip the antennae, eyes and horn off the shrimp's face before cooking them. The antennae will make a gross mess in your pot. You're welcome for this advice. Don't eat this more than once a year if you want to live past 40. This is one of the best versions I've ever had.Shrimp, Chicken or Rabbit Sauce Piquant - VERY hot. If you can eat very spicy Asian food, you will be fine with it. If you want to make a less hot version, make shrimp creole instead.Seafood Stuffed Shrimp - A royal pain to make, but worth it! I like to make this with his Shrimp and Crabmeat butter cream sauce.Cajun Prime RibCajun MeatloafChicken Curry - doesn't taste anything like an proper Asian curry, but is delicious anyway. This has actually been a traditional New Orleans dish for a long time, although out of fashion now, it was very popular in the 1940's - 1970's. Made with a great deal of butter and fruit (raisins, apples, coconut and bananas here) and very spicy.Sticky ChickenCorn Maque Choux - this is a delicious version which is sweet. It isn't commonly made like this in Louisiana, but I like this one better than the normal, savory way with tomatoes.Potato Salad/Green Onion Salad Dressing - I'm not kidding. Make this.Gumbos - all of them. Especially Seafood, but all of them are excellent.Jambalaya - all of them, except the ones where he wants to put oysters in them. No one puts oysters in jambalaya down here, and I find it very weird and off putting, and I don't think it really works. Just my opinion.Roast Pork Loin - GODNow for some of the ones I don't care for, or rather just don't work for me. The big man, as much as I love him, has Cajunified these particular New Orleans classics with too much oil -Stuffed Merliton - this version is somewhat greasy and I don't think the sauce does much for it. The merlitons (chayote squash) Americans find in the store are about 1/4 the size of the ones grown here, which also have spiny, husky skins which stuff well. The store bought ones from Central America aren't big enough, so don't try them. That said you can make a casserole version of this with them, but there are better recipes.Red Beans and Rice - way too greasy with those ham hocks. The seasoning is just right though. You could make this same recipe, except sautéing the trinity with seasoning first, then adding to the pot of boiling water (better: ham stock) with a smoked ham shank. Do away with the ham hocks and use a equal amount of pickled pork shoulder meat as you do beans. Pickled pork is a must in red beans for most New Orleanians.Oyster Dressing - too much oil! Yikes.Chicken Big Mamou (not a New Orleans dish) - too much butter again.

Because, although I've bought a few others by a certain well-known New Orleans chef, this is the best, most authentic cookbook for the region. Simple ingredients and no frou-frou!

I am a chef, and this book is THE Bible of Creole/Cajun, or as it's now called Southern Louisiana cooking. Wonderful book, now in about it's 80th printing! I use it all the time.I truly consider this book one of the best cookbooks ever from the USA. It ranks up there with "The Joy of Cooking" and "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" as classics, or standards that all serious cooks need to have in their library. Many people think that New Orleans has the best food in America, and Paul is without a doubt one of the best New Orleans cooks. If you want to explore one of the only true American cuisines, this book is a must.As a hint for those worried about the 'heat' levels in some of these foods, do what professional chef's do: Simply start with 1/4 the amount of 'hot' ingredients when you make a recipe. You can always add more heat if you want it, but you can't take it out!Laissez les bons temps rouler!
