My 2 year old LOVES this entire series of Nat. Geo Readers... I have purchased about 25 different titles, "pre-readers" as well as Level 1 & 2 readers. She loves them all & will ask for certain ones. The "pre-readers" level books are extremely simple & great because she memorizes the words & can "read" it herself. We love the more advanced ones too, because there is more information to talk about. I have learned quite a few facts, myself!) What a great series. The price is reasonable & pictures are great. These are really getting her interested in nature, animals & science... I will continue to buy these as they are released, for our collection!

I read this book with my 7 year old, and he really enjoyed it. It was very informative without causing an "information overload." National Geographic does a good job with providing this information in an age appropriate manner through easy to understand language, and also includes photos pertaining to the topics being discussed on that particular page. I recommend reading this book with your child or student. That way, you can ask and answer questions together, and spark up a conversation about what your child has learned.

My almost 3-year old son loves these books. I love that they are cheap, they have great pictures, and are full of facts that he has learned. He is a sponge, and soaks up every animal fact he can find. It's pretty amazing when your toddler informs his daycare teacher that "sharks don't have bones, they have cartilage!" We are buying all of the Pre-Reader, Level 1, and Level 2 books we can find. (Word to the wise: if your kid isn't reading yet, the Level 3's of this series are a bit much to read to a toddler. Still great photos and facts, but a bit long for Mommy to read for a before-bed-book.)

Wonderful nonfiction book about sharks. Full on fun facts about sharks. My son enjoyed the read, and so did I. It is interspersed with jokes and colorful pictures and this makes the book more enjoyable! Some of They could've left out the part about, being happy that a certain shark was extinct. My child was a bit offended by that. Other than that, the ending does encourage coexistence with this often feared and misunderstood sea creature.

I purchased this book for an 8 year old who was given sharks teeth found and collected off Manasota Key Florida. He loved being able to look up information on the type of teeth he now has in his possesion. He thought it was pretty cool! This book gives all sorts of explanations and easy to understand information about sharks body's and teeth. Easy to understand pictures with explanations. I scored giving this book as a gift.

I’m a second grade teacher & I bought this book for our Shark Week unit. Great for a read aloud or students to read on their own during centers. Teaches so much information on sharks’ sense and the different species of sharks.

Great books...educational and easy read for young children. My 5 year old nephew is enthralled with this series.

I didn't like that the book's pages where not in order an some where repetitive. But I just skip the pages that are the same and keep reading my kids love this book so do I. It has good information and is very interesting to my kids that's all I care. Great book! Love that it comes in Spanish edition.

I bought this book because we have often visited the Larz Anderson Park in Brookline and I was curious about the backstory.I very much enjoyed the mix of interesting stories and academic detail. Moskey has done a very nice job of gathering together the story of this wealthy couple from a previous age, that has been disappearing over time. I guess a moral to their story is if you are going to leave no great works and no children then be prepared for the memory to fade. They were somewhat like a US version of Downton Abbey where they spent their time managing their estates, travelling and dallying with the real world when it met with their convenience.I was most interested in reading about some of their interconnections with other famous people from the turn of the previous century.

As a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, I have been fortunate to spend many days at Anderson House in WAshington DC, The Society has maintained and restored much of the fabric of the decor (and important things like heat and light) since receiving this generous gift in the 1930s. I have often enjoyed breakfast in the :winter garden" pictured on the front cover. Our generation never knew the Andersons except for myth and fable. So it was a real treat to read Skip Moskey's fine biography. It brings the house to life with all the personal details so carefully researched. Much of the book covers also their elegant hilltop mansion in Brookline, MA which is no longer there. Their automobiles survive in the Auto museum in the magnificent barn on the property which was left to the Town of Brookline.Bringing here characters to life is a wonderful story and a good read, besides. Lars was a figure of his age and Moskey brings that age to life with color and flair.

Well researched and written, Moskey's book provides a fascinatingdetailed look at the life and times of the Andersons. A most enjoyableread, and a must for the present occupants of their former home inWashington, DC, which Isabel gave to the Society of the Cincinnati.

Great

Interesting biography of a rather unpleasant personality

British seller was great!

The story of Larz and Isabel Anderson is interwoven with the history of the United States at the turn of the 20th century. Gilded Age wealth, high-flying style, social-class attitudes and leisurely occupations are displayed with a mastery of detail in this first biography of the power couple of their time. Skip Moskey shows off his fabulous research skills in depicting the Andersons' lives through their expenses and consumption, from dinner parties they held at their Washington mansion to trips taken aboard their houseboat, the Roxana, and above all, the houses they built in Washington, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He draws the difference in character between free-spending Larz and frugal Isabel, whose down-to-earth and practical side did not fit so easily with her inherited wealth. But he also shows a couple whose relationship was framed in love and respect, and how that was expressed in their social context. This book is interesting social history. I would have liked to have seen more of a narrative, a theme, or a guiding reason to care about the Andersons, but I am happy to have met them!

The bio of Larz and Isabel Anderson is slightly odd in its arrangement, not entirely chronological but understandable given the areas in their lives to be discussed. It's generally well-written.I have visited "Weld" - the Larz Anderson Transportation Museum - a number of times as part of a motorcycle gathering on the premises. As an architectural historian and garden lover, I was fascinated by the grounds and the Wheelwright carriage house and automobile buildings, stunning examples of his style. The garden's remains were sad to see, however. The book is badly lacking illustrations of the garden, especially since it spends so much time describing them. This could have been remedied easily from the Archives of American Gardens at the Smithsonian Institution ( lovely photos in color and b/w of "Weld"). Also, the Larz Anderson Transportation Museum owns an extensive photo archive of the gardens. One must therefore purchase the Arcadia Images Of America "Larz Anderson Park" in order to satisfy any interest in what the garden looked like during its prime. There are also images of their vehicles in that volume. If the reader is interested in the gardens, they may access the Archives of American Gardens on the Smithsonian's website and buy or borrow the Larz Anderson Park book to balance the lack of appropriate illustrations in the Moskey book.

In the author's note at the end of this book, Lee acknowledges that her book is not for everyone.Indeed.I won't say it was terrible, 'cause it wasn't. The author's ability to tell a story - in the choice-of-language sense - is not bad at all. The editing...well, it wasn't great by any means, but it wasn't *too* distracting. On paper, this sounds like it ought to be an enjoyable story. It's got its issues, though.1. Oh sweet good god, the dialogue. Usually when I complain about a book's dialogue, it's because the author doesn't know how to write it. It comes out sounding stilted and unnatural. Not so in AWWYC; the author does that part just fine. No, here it's just obnoxious. The entire book is built on bickering. Bickering between the MC and her cousins. Bickering between the aunts. Bickering between the cousins and the ghosts. Bickering between the aunts and the cousins. Bickering between the MC and the love interest. Bickering between the old lady and everyone. Enough already! It's hard to like a story when you want to send every last character to their rooms without dinner.2. The plot. Why the plot? Because there wasn't much of one. We have a murder mystery in a book about a reporter who does very little investigating. Isn't that kind of a requirement for murder mysteries? The whole book is about her killing time until the next bit of information is revealed. She talks a big game about figuring out who the killer is, but doesn't do much more than Google a few things and badger some ghosts. And when the ghosts can't tell her what she wants to know? "Try to remember. It's important. And while you're doing that, I'm just going to go over here and bicker." The main character could have been absent from the book altogether and the story would still have gone on pretty much unchanged. The plot itself seemed like background that just provides an excuse to perform yet more ridiculous verbal slapstick.3. The unrealistic characters. Are we really supposed to believe that the police chief just invites a random civilian into a murder investigation? Are we supposed to believe that this family described as outcasts because they're actual witches isn't going to actually experience anything harsher than an uncomfortable look from all the assorted townspeople? Are we supposed to believe the town reporter - one of only two in the whole town - doesn't actually do much reporting or bother to look into a mystery and has the leisure to take great swaths of time off to hang out with the fam? And even if you could contort yourself into an explanation for these things - which we readers shouldn't have to do, BTW - we've got the fact that the characters all have such similar voices that they're virtually interchangeable. (I was particularly irritated by the frequent mentions of how awful and self-centered teenagers are by someone who acts - and thinks - exactly like the teenagers.)4. The predictability. The ending was no surprise at all. By about chapter four, I had figured out not only who the murderer was, but also who the love interest was.5. The lack of magic. Dude. This is a book about witches. It's billed as urban fantasy. I read this stuff because I think people with powers are cool. There's next to no magic in the story...and it doesn't even occur to the characters to use it to help solve their mystery! They're terrible at being witches.6. The running internal monologue. For every line of dialogue, there's another line of unspoken snark. Snark is one of those things that's more potent when used sparingly. Here, it just makes the MC sound like an insincere jerk. So, you're no doubt thinking to yourselves (assuming you actually read all that, of course), how is it this book got 2.5 stars rounded UP? Two reasons. For one thing, I didn't actually notice a lot of the bad stuff until I was done and actually stopped to think about it all. The fact that I got caught up in a story where nothing seems to actually happen says...something. Not sure what, exactly, but something. Secondly, if you go into this book expecting mindless fluff, you might not think it's too bad. And mindless fluff has its place; sometimes I want to escape in a way that doesn't require any brainpower. So there you have it. This book really isn't very good, but it's a quick read and it serves a purpose. If your expectations are low, you'll probably get to the end feeling mildly entertained. But make no mistake - I may not think the book was a complete waste of time, but I have no intention of reading the rest of the series.

Read four of the books in this series. I really tried to enjoy the series, but frankly, the characters are annoying. Bitchy, bratty, vapid, unintelligent. The same old same old with the character dynamics in every book. It is like Amanda Lee kept most of the lines the same for all of the characters from book to book and just inserted new story details in between the character lines. The stories are interesting, but the characters just detract from the stories. I have a wicked sense of humor, enjoy irony and LOVE sarcasm as long as it is packaged with wit. Think Kresley Cole and Sherrilyn Kenyon. These girls are sarcastic, but the wit and sharpness is missing. Amanda Lee ends her books "bragging" about her unique sense of humor. It really isn't unique. It reads like someone who is working really hard to come across as someone with a unique sense of humor.

Brava!!!! I'm reviewing book 1 in this series after devouring all 6 books in the Wicked Witches of the Midwest, because I want people just stumbling onto these reads to know that they're a treasure trove. I've been reading fantasy, science fiction and paranormal for over 40 years...yes, I'm no spring chicken...but I do know what's entertaining, even at my age (I'm not really THAT old!). I never lost interest for one second while flipping Kindle pages and went straight through the series from 1 through 6 without a break. Trust me...that is NOT my usual MO. I get bored with poor writing, hideous editing, repetitive tension, overly-convoluted plotting and volumes of words that just turn out to be "exercises in reading." I also get bored with well written, highly acclaimed "classics." These books are just flat out entertaining. Amanda Lee is incredibly witty, inventive, well spoken and original. What more can you ask when you're looking for an enthralling and FUN read??!!! All I can say is...MORE MORE MORE!!! Keep these witches' brews coming, Amanda! I'm looking forward to gobbling up whatever you have to offer. Thank you.

I know exactly where I was when I purchased Any Which Way You Can. I was sitting in LaGuardia Airport in NYC after a harrowing experience on the NY freeway. The title of series, Wicked Witches of the Midwest, caught my eye having lived in the Midwest all my life. Then this book sat on my eBook shelf for close to a year and an half. Thanks to COYER Blackout, I finally tackled it.I’m a pretty tough sell when it comes to mystery novels. I want a tightly woven mystery with just enough clues (or breadcrumbs) to allow me to discover “who-dun-it” just before the sleuth in the story figures it out. Sadly, Any Witch Way You Can fails on this point. The mystery was sloppy and not very mysterious, in my opinion. However, Any Which Way You Can shines with a full cast of funny, sarcastic, friendly characters that you can relate to. These characters kept me reading until the end despite the lackluster mystery. Bay’s family, especially her cousins and grandmother, provided some of the funniest moments in the story. They reminded me of people in my own life that I hold dear for their honesty and lightheartedness. While I definitely didn’t finish Any Witch Way You Can because of the plot, I would recommend it if you are looking for a easy, quick read with some memorable characters that will make your smile and bring a bit of humor to your life.

Review

"Rowling's wizardry as a writer is on fulsome display in Lethal White ( 3.5/4 stars), a behemoth of a novel that flies by in a flash. This is a crime series deeply rooted in the real world, where brutality and ugliness are leavened by the oh-so-human flaws and virtues of Galbraith's irresistible hero and heroine."―USA Today"At times you might feel as you did when reading the Harry Potter books, particularly later in the series, when they got longer and looser. You love the plot, and you love being in the company of the characters, and you admire the author's voice and insights and ingenuity, and you relish the chance to relax into a book without feeling rushed or puzzled or shortchanged.... Long live the fertile imagination and prodigious output of J.K. Rowling."―The New York Times"If you love the intricate, character-driven mysteries written by Tana French and Kate Atkinson, then chances are good that you'll enjoy the ones by Robert Galbraith. . . . Robert Galbraith knows how to tell a story every bit as deftly as does J.K. Rowling. Cormoran Strike, who lost a leg in Afghanistan, may limp painfully through much of the book, but the tale being told never misses a step."―Joyce Sáenz Harris, Dallas Morning News"Even if the world is the seedy underbelly of contemporary London and not Magical Hogwarts, cracking the cover of a Galbraith novel is like stepping through a portal. You're immersed all at once."―Bustle"Addictive, murderous fun."―Vox"Compulsively readable."―People"One of contemporary crime fiction's most delightful partnerships."―Seattle Times"Rowling's emotionally intelligent portrayal of her protagonists never overwhelms the whodunit story line."―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review"Rowling deftly circumnavigates all of the tropes and constructs that have long since relegated the male-author-dominated thriller genre to a place of ridicule and sheer inanity."―Tablet Magazine

After reading another autobiography, I felt I needed to read a suspense police procedural or thriller. Then, lo and behold, I found that a book I had pre-ordered appeared on my Kindle this morning. Launched into it several hours ago and found it to be better than some, but not quite hitting every note quite right for my desires in private eye stories. That, however, is getting ahead of the story. Please let me first address some key points:BLUSH FACTOR: It is no big secret that J. K. Rowling writes also as Robert Galbraith. Doing so is a smart move, as it signals that the story is fit more for adults than for kids. And, to be sure, the language and discussions within this epic novel is not the sort recommended for young ears or church prayer groups. There is sexual content but not graphic. Just intimate enough to titillate…The blush factor information is not provided as a complaint, nor as a cause for rating the book four stars instead of five. Rather, because it does so well portray the grittier side of life as I believe it to be for the sorts of characters depicted, I am tempted to raise the rating instead of lower it. Still, I am sure some readers will appreciate the caution.SOUL: Yes, because “Lethal White” does get so deeply into the seedier side of life for the types of characters depicted, one could say it has soul.POV: This story is told to us in third person.THE WRITING FLOW: The flow though out “Lethal White” is easy to read. And faster reading than one might expect from a 600-plus page epic. Some reviewers are sure to complain about the length and the tendency to slow down the pace, but do not count me as one of them. I appreciate the pace-changing that kept me turning the pages. Further, the character development is better than I expected, making the story well worth reading.Excerpt‘…Strike, who had spent large portions of his childhood living in squalor, found a disregard for hygiene hard to like, except in those people so unhappy or ill that cleanliness became an irrelevance.“Ex-army, aren’t you?” she asked, but Jimmy spoke over her.“How did Billy know how to find you?”“Directory inquiries?” suggested Strike. “I don’t live in a bat cave.”“Billy doesn’t know how to use directory inquiries.”“He managed to find my office OK.”“There’s no dead kid,” Jimmy said abruptly. “It’s all in his head. He goes on about it when he’s having an episode. Didn’t you see his tic?”Jimmy imitated, with brutal accuracy, the compulsive nose to chest movement of a twitching hand. Flick laughed.“Yeah, I saw that,” said Strike, unsmiling. “You don’t know where he is, then?”“Haven’t seen him since yesterday morning. What do you want him for?”“Like I say, he didn’t seem in any fit state to be wandering around on his own.”“Very public spirited of you,” said Jimmy. “Rich and famous detective worrying about our Bill.”Strike said nothing.“Army,” Flick repeated, “weren’t you?”“I was,” said Strike, looking down at her. “How’s that relevant?”“Just saying.” She had flushed a little in her righteous anger. “Haven’t always been this worried about people getting hurt, have you?”Strike, who was familiar with people who shared Flick’s views, said nothing. She would probably believe him if he told her he had joined the forces in the hope of bayoneting children.Jimmy, who also seemed disinclined to hear more of Flick’s opinions on the military, said:“Billy’ll be fine. He crashes at ours sometimes, then goes off. Does it all the time.”“Where does he stay when he’s not with you?”“Friends,” said Jimmy, shrugging. “I don’t know all their names.” Then, contradicting himself, “I’ll ring around tonight, make sure he’s OK.”“Right you are,” said Strike, downing his pint and handing the empty to a tattooed bar worker, who was marching through the forecourt, grabbing glasses from all who had finished with them. Strike took a last drag on his cigarette, dropped it to join the thousands of its brethren on the cracked forecourt, ground it out beneath his prosthetic foot, then…’Galbraith, Robert. Lethal White (A Cormoran Strike Novel) (Kindle Locations 1162-1182). Little, Brown and Company. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINETough for me to settle on four stars or five stars. I think if there had been a little humor, even sarcasm, weaved in here and there, this might have touched all the bases for me. Still, I did enjoy the tale.Four stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. This book was a pre-order, set to load on my kindle two days before my birthday. The only complaint I can muster is that I read these books as soon as they are released and then have to wait a year+ for the next one. No spoilers here. I will say that I enjoyed this one just as much as the 1st installment "Cuckoo's Calling". None of the books in this series have been a disappointment but I do have my favorites, of course. I wish that I could write a lengthy review but I just finished reading Lethal White and I'm exhausted. I'm hooked on this series and probably more invested in the eventual outcome for Strike and Robin than I should be. Aaannd now I have to wait a year+ for the next installment.

Disappointed... the last third of the book was pretty good, more like a 4. But in order to get to that you had to suffer over the whole 'Matthew is mean', 'Matthew is a horrible husband.' It got So Old. I hate Matthew. I don't like him as a character, never have. I thought that the first 2/3 of the book focused far too much on the love triangle / rectangle of it all. Also, I thought that the overall plot was... bizarre. I recently watched the Strike TV show (you can get it through iTunes), and while I love the main characters, the plots themselves are so bizarre in general, but this I thought was the Worst of all the plots of the Cormoran Strike books and plots. They only mentioned what a 'lethal white' was once. I think it refers to the painting in question. I hope that the next book is far, far better. Less romance, no Matthew, and less 'my achy leg'. I love the main characters, but this feels like a departure from the earlier books in so many ways. In the end J.K. Rowling says that this book was one of the most complicated and difficult she has ever written... really? This is probably my Least Favorite J.K. Rowling book... ever. All the Harry Potter books I loved - I was never very critical of them, just feasted on them. If this is the most difficult book you've ever written, maybe that's because it wasn't working? Spoilers - I figured out that the son and the mother-in-law were having an affair at least half way through the book, but the other pieces were basically impossible to guess, although I enjoyed the mystery. Also, I was extremely disappointed that the entire beginning of the story, Billy, ended up basically being pointless. I think a plot where the favorite son who died somehow popped up would've been so much better!
