This isn't a review for the book, but for the audible recording. This is the only one of the series by this narrator, and compared to the other books it falls far short. It's all pet peeves - she doesn't pronounce names and words the same. Lay lines become lei lines and takata is tah-kah-tah with all sharp sounds. They also play this ominous music when there's a potential plot twist which is just annoying. Thankfully, the original narrator is back with the next book. For the books themselves - Kim Harrison does an outstanding job with the Hollows series, all in all its very enjoyable.

I have read the whole series, so this isn't particular to this book, but the main character frustrates me in as much as she won't kill anyone (though they deserve it), even though she talks smack (a lot), but when it comes down to it her morals are more important than the people in her life. There are many instances when if she had put the greater good ahead of herself - and she whines in her head that it's all her fault and usually it is - several of the people in her life would be alive. I hated this part of the books. The action, the twists and turns, the unexpected surprises, the relationships, etc. All good! I would rate them a 5. But the main character pissed me off so many times, I wanted to smack her myself. At times she acts like a bully and wonders why people react ugly. At others she doesn't react when she should. Overall I would recommend this series, but wish the author would take this information and use it in her next series.

The plotting of a series involving the same main character usually starts to falter about this time. Not so with the Hollows series. This book is probably the best so far, slightly edging out book 2.The characters continue to develop nicely, the plotting is intricate and interesting and the writing overall is just getting better. Now, there explanations of actions of other books, The issues, events and sometime open plot and character questions left open in other books are seamlessly woven into the story and answered effortlessly here. In other books, I felt that Ms. Harrison sometimes forgot the explanation given in other novels and at times the plotting and explanations in one book conflicted with those of another.I particularly enjoy the fact that there is not a heavy emphasis on romance in this book, which I find boring. In most of these paranormal romances, male characters generally become siphers; their sole existence is protect and moon over the heroine. Once interesting, they become bland, boring and sterile. Ms. Harrison fell into that trap with the unfortunate Kisten. Once interesting, he turned into a male with little life of his own except to support Rachel. Nick also was plunged into that hole, but was redeemed by turning out to be a bit of a rake with his own agenda. There is sexual tension but the whole book doesn't revolve around it. In fact the story could stand alone without itAll in all, fine effort and I am looking forward to the next book. BTW, I did listen to the audible version. Once you get over the shock of hearing a different voice than the chameleon like Margarite Gavin, the audible book was not that bad. I agree , Jenks voice was bit too effeminate and screachy for my taste but the version was listenable. However, I do prefer Ms. Gavin and I am glad that she makes a return as narrator for the rest of the series.

In this book Al has escaped the Ever After because someone is summoning him out. Al is out of blood, Rachel's blood that is, and he is torturing her loved ones just to piss Rachel off. Rachel must team up with Trey to save herself and the ones she cares about and travel into the Ever After. Meanwhile Rachel discovers a shocking secret about her parentage that will have her questioning who she is. Also, Ceri has some shocking news herself and Quin will put himself in mortal peril to help Ceri.As always in a Rachel Morgan book there is a lot going on and Rachel must deal with it all as well as trying to heal from the tragedy that struck her in the previous book. I don't know how Kim Harrison does it but the story never bogs down as Rachel moves from one crisis to another. In this book we get a glimpse into Rachel's childhood and more contact with her mother. I love her mother and my favorite scene is when she is giving Rachel advice on her love life. I liked how all the plot lines come together in the end and Rachel is able to save the day with just the right amount of humor and dramatic flair. As far as the narrator of this book it is the only one that does not have Marguerite Gavin narrating and this narrator is Gigi Bermingham. My only complaint about this book is the narrator I disliked the way she voiced Jenks but it wasn't enough to make me stop the audiobook. When listening to this book just do like I did and keep reminding yourself she only does this book and Ms. Gavin will return for White Witch, Black Curse and it will help you get through Jenks' voice narration. Overall, I really like Outlaw Demon Wails and give this audiobook four solid laser pistols.

I'm pleasantly surprised that this book actually comes with a slipcase. The cover art for the slipcase and book are also different from what's shown. The hardcover is very beautiful, smooth matt, and features a painting of Iron Man by Ryan Meinerding, who's still the concept artist for the second movie. At 224 pages, this book features much more Iron Man designs that the first book, The Art of Iron Man. There's the new Iron Man suit which you can recognise by the triangle RT on the chest, the Suitcase Suit, The War Machine, plenty of drones and Whiplash. There are illustrations, 3D models, screenshots, physical sets. The Iron Man suit designs are really fantastic. It's more streamline, cooler and just mean at the same time. They are beautifully drawn with lots of details. You can see the different plates, metal shine and even battle damaged suits, which will make you go "Ouch, that must have really hurt." Many of the designs have the high drool factor and deserved to be made into action figures. If you've watched the trailers, you'll see that Iron Man was surrounded by lots of drones. Well, those drones are also included. There are Army, Navy, Airforce and Marine drones. As if it's not enough, there are Feebles also, which are the mechas designed by other countries. Feebles are really cool because they convey personality of their home countries through the designs. Mecha fans will be delighted.About a quarter of the book is on the environment and set. And the bulk of that is actually on the Stark Expo, featuring illustrations, miniatures, etc. Right at the back there are some storyboard sequences and more miscellaneous art like the re-designed RT, Stark's cars, labs, and other stuff. Whiplash armor is actually a physical set and there's an impressive photo showing all the parts separately, like LEGO bricks, but in metal. This book is as good as or even better than the first art book.Highly recommended.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

The second book does pack in the artwork as mentioned, but the edition comes in a slipcase versus the hardcover version of the first book (I prefer hardcover to slipcase). Be forewarned, majority of the book is comprised of endless, though technically well executed, variations on different iron suits: suitcase versions, military versions, Warm Machine versions, etc. There are storyboard work along with designs as well. All in all, the book is pretty much as expected: a huge collection of mechanical designs done by Photoshop wizards (with a scattering of 3D models).

If you bought the Art of Iron Man and liked it, you'll definitely want this one. It's even better. The slipcase feature was a surprise and really makes the book a true collector's item. Because of the new characters and suits in the second movie, I enjoyed this book even better. The comprehensive coverage of the designs very much did justice to the great work by all the artists involved. I wish more "Art of " books were this detailed. The one con if there is one is the paper quality. Maybe because of the slipcase costs, they've used a slightly thinner paper stock as compared to the first book. A very minor con. I'd highly recommend this to anyone.

This book gives a wonderful glimpse behind the scenes and into the magic of making a special effects wonder like Iron Man 2. I always marvel,no pun intended,at the incredible talent that goes into developing such an entertaining movie. I can't recommend this book enough for comic book fans who love Iron man or just movie lovers who would like to see how some of the scenes were developed and brought to the big screen.

This book is intended for the hard-core fans of Ironman as it includes tons of amazing artwork for the movie, as well as intricate drawings of the various suits used in the movie. The hardcover edition comes in a sturdy box, which contains a beautiful drawing of Ironman and War Machine. This book may not seem that interesting to the cursory fan, but it's a treasure-cove of goodies for real fans :)

Great art for the movie. Gets technical with the armors. Must buy for Iron Man fans.

love the movie variant cover and the collection brings back memories of my youth

I thought these older beginning collections might be old dated and boring, but I was wrong! Stan Lee is a brilliant writer and I've absolutely enjoyed these omnibus editions more than I would've guessed! These Stan Lee scripted foundations of the marvel universe may have been the best written of any comics that followed in some ways, with Stan constantly inventing and innovating. Please, Marvel release full runs of all the classic series in omnibus form, they are fantastic. My only concern with Marvel Omnibus editions is the binding, although the main series like Iron Man, Spider Man, Hulk and FF seem strong and the glue holds, others like Tomb of Dracula have bindings coming unglued. I am constantly checking the binding and the Secret Wars II has some bits also coming loose. If Marvel gets the binding quality up these are amazing books to own and I love them and hope for a large collection of runs with these. Highly recommended to comics/ Marvel lovahz

Time's Convert: A Novel, by Deborah Harkness

From School Library Journal

This follow-up to the "All-Souls" trilogy begins with Phoebe Taylor preparing to be turned into a vampire to join her mate, Marcus de Clermont. The novel follows three characters-Phoebe, Diana Bishop (who is a witch), and Marcus. "Baby vampire" Phoebe is learning about the wonders and agony of being supernatural. As Phoebe moves through her transformation, Marcus begins to slowly confront the demons of his past-his childhood in colonial Massachusetts and his service in George Washington's army, where he met Matthew de Clermont, which led to his life as a vampire. His sections are rich in history and detail. Diana and Matthew are raising their toddler vampire-witch twins, who are already biting vampire relatives and using magic. Their marriage and the twins' birth have consequences in the supernatural world, and they are dealing with the political fallout. This engaging and fascinating book will appeal to supernatural and history buffs, but keeping track of all the vampire family members and politics might be daunting for those unfamiliar with the previous series installments. VERDICT A great purchase where the trilogy has a following.-Tamara Saarinen, Pierce County Library, WAα(c) Copyright 2011. #5,012 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I was so excited for this book to come out. I even read the first couple of chapters when it appeared on my Kindle after midnight. I loved the trilogy so much and re-read it recently so that everything was fresh in my mind. I loved Marcus. I couldn't wait to find out how his relationship with Phoebe developed from the meeting at Sotheby's when he bought Diana and Matthew's miniatures. I was beyond impatient to read how their epic love story unfolded. Finally, when my Kindle was at about 85%, I realized it wasn't happening. Honestly, 36+ hours later, I am still really deflated and upset about it. Actually, as I write this, I'm getting riled up again, and more depressed. I mean, when else will we find out all those details? Not in another book, right? We don't even see them as a couple until the end. None of the care taken building Matthew and Diana's relationship is there. Their connection is so deep and layered and romantic and intricate. Not so with Marcus and Phoebe. Why do Phoebe and Marcus love each other? What was so deep, everlasting and special about their relationship that convinced Phoebe to turn into a vampire? It's like a whole BIG section is missing from the book. And, outside of the missing relationship, there's also no real path or connection for Marcus to the present after New Orleans -- we're just left in the dark after his chastisement for the next 200+ years to modern day. And we really know nothing about Phoebe except for a few comments about painting and ballet and her upper-crust upbringing. Wouldn't it have been interesting to actually read about her telling her family Marcus is a vampire and oh, she's going to turn into one instead of meeting them when they already know and she's saying goodbye/goodnight before the process begins?I feel terrible complaining because the book is beautifully written and the attention to history and detail is phenomenal. I was counting the days and minutes until this released. And I loved, loved, loved the twins and glimpses into Matthew and Diana's continuing life. Maybe this book tried to satisfy too many themes? On another note, I love Gallowglass and want him to find his true love -- but now that I've been disappointed by Marcus and Phoebe, will he get a chance? He so deserves it. But will the same lack of attention happen?? That's what I'm afraid of! I'm going to give myself a little while to cool off and read it again. Maybe I missed something?

I loved author Deborah Harkness’ previous trilogy and was excited about this new work. I eagerly read it and quickly remembered the characters and the basic story, even though it has been awhile since I last read about them. This book, Time’s Convert, lacks focus, and I kept feeling as though I was being set up to read a multi-story arc that wouldn’t make sense until the final story. Those are my least favorite types of series; I prefer series that engage readers in character development and new adventures rather than piecemeal tales. This book has three partial stories, none of which are really very rewarding by book’s end. Phoebe becomes a vampire, Marcus reveals his human past and very early vampire years and Matthew and Diana’s twins begin to develop real personalities. The Phoebe/Marcus story could have been a good book or the twins could have been a good book but this was not enough anything to be a really good story. I remain hungry for more

Loved all souls--which grabbed you from the beginning. In this book, nothing happens. We already knew phoebe planned to become a vampire. And she did. We already knew Marcus was in the revolutionary war and lived in Nola. Now we know more but care less. This author is better than this series of historical vignettes. Maybe something will happen in the next book, but I won't buy it the day it comes out...will wait for reviews. This is all background info and no story.

If you’re expecting another great book similar the All Souls Trilogy (in terms of storyline, action and character development) you will likely be somewhat disappointed. The book doesn’t really get interesting until around page 200. The back story on Marcus is at times quite tedious and feels a bit like a vanity piece for the author to write about the American and French Revolutionary periods. All that said, the last half of the book is entertaining and a fairly fun read. It was interesting to read about Phoebe’s transformation and revisit with Diana and Matthew a couple of years post-Book of Life. However, there’s really not much of a compelling storyline here and the author struggles to pull together 3 story ideas into one cohesive book. If you loved Shadow of Night, you are more likely to enjoy this book, given the focus on historical references and atmosphere.I’m still a big fan of Deborah Harkness, but this book lacked the sparkle of her other brilliant efforts.

I gave 3 stars and I feel like that is generous. After reading all the books that came before this one, it seemed rather flat.
