This book is a very easy to use reference book. It should be called Quick and Easy Lookup Medical Transcription Guide: Do's and Don'ts. It is just an amazing book. I purchased this on Amazon not expecting too much because I have the 3rd edition of AAMT Book of Style and also the Workbook which are both excellent, but for a few cents (yes cents), I decided to try this. However, to my surprise it follows the same standards as the AAMT Book of Style, and it even has quite a few samples of medical documents. It is a very good reference book and you can find anything you want in the blink of an eye. This will be added to my library of MT books and will be used as much as the others.Let us not forget the Do's and Don'ts because this is a great aspect of the book. Just think of a MT question and the answer is before you. I know I am reapeating myself but I embrace anything that will make my life easier and this is one of them.

I wish this was out text book for my class. So full of much needed information and small enough to take to work. A wonderful guide even though it's a little older. I highly recommend this book.

This is like a bible for the medical transcriber. When you do diversified work in the medical field sometimes you forget the format to use and this book gives that to you in easy reference form. There are so many other things this book offers in a concise way. It comes highly recommended.

This book is awesome for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, it's very comprehensive--containing grammar, spelling, medical transcription-specific info, frequently misused words & sound-alikes, lab values, and much more. This is my bible, even though it hasn't been updated for a while and is definitely due. I can't wait for the new version to come out!The spiral-bound version is a real bonus because it's so much easier to use and not lose your place.

The book condition really met my expectation which I'm very surprise especially for a cheap price. You have my trust.

I used this book in my medical transcription class in college. We used it alot this semester and i learned things that i didnt know before. the book itself was in good condition.

Do NOT purchase anything for Medical Transcription!! Please!! This is an almost defunct career choice. As a 37+ year veteran in this field, almost every job has been absorbed by the new computer policies of the Obamacare regime. Almost every transcription job has been cut. There are no jobs, so it's not wise to invest in any tools to do this job. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on anything related to this field. It is just about impossible to get a job and there are people with YEARS of experience all over the country who are out of work. I know of one facility that went from 40 transcriptions, down to 3, and that is just one facility!!

I am a new MT and have found this book very helpful. The table of contents (listed alphabetically - nice) is on the back cover that folds over, which I have found easy to use. I LOVE that it is spiral bound, as it only takes up half as much space on my desk. It also includes appendices for items such as problem words, genus and species names, commonly used abbreviations, etc.

Home and shipboard cooking using the freshest ingredients from port to port. Reading this cookbook is an adventure into the lives of the ships Captain and the Chef on the Hudson River. Beautiful photos artfully taken with a history of sailing on the Hudson and the East Coast.

Several years ago a friend and I sailed on the J & E Riggan, one of the Maine schooners, owned by Capts Anne Mahle and John Finger. She was the chef, the food was superb, all cooked on a wood stove on the schooner. This cookbook is full of her recipes. I've tried several of them and they are just as good as I remember. The cookbook also has stories and history of the schooner. A great cookbook. Even better, take a schooner cruise on the Riggan along the coast of Maine, it will be a favorite trip.

This is a great book. Food tastes great. Had a chance to taste some of it on the windjammer cruise they have.

One of my cooking bibles. The recipes are straightforward and delicious, especially Annie's "Cheesy Potatoes"! I'm a sailor, too, and my hat is off to her to make such great food aboard their schooner.

great Maine recipes! Most are fairly easy to bring together and fun to make ! Unfornunately , Price of lobster is sky high at the present time

This was a happy surprise in my Christmas stocking this year, after my mother ran into the author at Barnes and Noble. I'm so glad she snagged me a copy, since I'm not quite sure what I'd do without this cookbook in my home. This is one of those cookbooks that you don't know if you should put in your kitchen with the rest of the cookbooks, or out on the coffee table so that everybody can enjoy it. This book features wonderfully sophisticated home-cooking style recipes, breathtaking photos from the J&E Riggin, the Maine Windjammer that's currently cared for by the author and her husband, and oodles of stories about the Windjammer, their voyages, their history, and the ideas behind these recipes. This cookbook has the feel of a family journal or photo album, which is really a great feeling that is lost with a lot of cookbooks. So often these days when you buy a cookbook, it feels like the recipes featured in it are made once or twice in a test kitchen before getting a rubber-stamped approval to be shown in their mass-produced cookbook. But you don't feel that with this book. You know that these recipes were made dozens, maybe hundreds of times to hundreds of hungry people before being collected and featured in a cookbook that feels like should be a personal family cookbook, not something you can just pick up at a bookstore. I love that feel. There are a ton of recipes in this book, not different versions of the same ol' meals that you can find in any cookbook. Unique recipes, ones that I've never seen on paper other than from my mother's handwritten recipe cards. Recipes like German Apple Pancakes, Roasted Mushrooms and Artichoke Sauce, Nectarine-Blueberry Bread, Ginger Shortbread, Black Bottom Banana Cream Pie, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Pork Pot Pie, Lemon Lobster with Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Wassail Bowl Punch... I could go on and on. Amazing. And this recipe book is a "from scratch" book, which I think is such a blessing, because there is nothing more frustrating than buying a cookbook with 100 different ways to prepare a can of "cream of chicken" soup and a can of refrigerator biscuits. This is a cookbook for cooks, and those of us who wish we were. We need more cookbooks out there like this. There is next to nothing wrong with this cookbook. The only observations I have made is that sometimes I need a little more description on the making of a recipe (for example, a notation the dough will be runny, lumpy, etc) as there have been a recipes that I made where the consistency or appearance wasn't quite what I expected. Also, it is obvious that some of these recipes were reduced from a recipe that made more servings for more people, so some of the seasonings and ingredients have to be tweaked for a more intimate setting. No big deal, just something to keep in mind.I love this cookbook. My favorite recipes thus far include the German Apple Pancakes, Pork Pot Pie, Rita's Double Toffee Delight, and the Wassail Punch. Even as we speak I have a batch of Double Toffee Delights filling my house with its delicious aroma. Every time I use this book, I remember Maine vacations, fine meals, happy memories... It's the best investment in a book I think anybody could make. This cookbook is a must-have for anybody. I can't say enough wonderful things about it.

I am one of those gen-x cooks who can make the basics for dinner and dessert. But, ever since I started using this cookbook, I have not only been preparing good wholesome dishes for my daughter and I, but have found myself trying new things. I am not known as the cook in my family, but having tried out a few recipes at family get-togethers, my family now wonders what I will be making next (and did she really make that?).I can follow a recipe as long as it is easy to make, and with this book it's not only easy, it's fun. I love reading the overall story of Anne, her husband Jon and children, Chloe and Ella. It adds a very personal touch to something that I used to think of as "a book of food to make".Not only are the recipes great, the photos in this book are so fantastic-giving you a real sense of being in Maine on a windjammer. It truly makes me want to go sailing again. I especially enjoyed the section called 'A Week at Sea'. How much better could life get-spending a whole week relaxing with the wind in your hair, taking part of hundred year old traditions, and eating some of the most delectable food you have ever tasted?! I don't think it can. Having sailed on the J&E Riggin myself, I can say with absoluteness that the mouth-watering cuisine that folks can have onboard, they can also have at home with this book.Anyone that either buys a copy or receives one as a gift will from that point on consider this their favorite cookbook- I sure know I do!

I was really glad to receive this cookbook as a gift as I have found it great fun to use. I think the layout of the cookbook was very well done as well as the color of the pages. . not something you see very often in a cookbook. The pictures are really beautiful and catch the feeling of the sea. I enjoy the margin notes in each section as well as, for example, in the Meat Section, Anne's description of the dinner menus she serves on board or under Yeast Breads her suggestions on proofing, flour vs water, etc. I found these very helpful. My one suggestion would be that if you weren't familiar with yeast breads, you wouldn't know how hot the "warm water" should be. Possibly if a temp. was added indicating that the "warm water" should be 105/110 it might be helpful. Also, after you make muffins some indication on whether they should be left in the pan or taken out. I loved the Blueberry Lemon Bread and so did some of my friends and especially Dana's Maple-Dill Dressing . .yum-o! I like to be able to make quick and good meals and this tops my list.

Review

“Brilliantly written… Sweetbitter is the Kitchen Confidential of our time.”—Gabrielle Hamilton, author of Blood, Bones & Butter and Prune, New York Times Book Review“Danler’s sexy, astute debut is really a love story about the addictive pull of restaurant life… Anyone who’s ever tied on an apron will think, “Finally, someone wrote a book about us.” And nailed it.”—People (book of the week)“An unpretentious, truth-dealing novel… about hunger of every variety. Ms. Danler is a sensitive observer… and gifted commenter on many things. Sweetbitter is going to make a lot of people hungry.”—Dwight Garner, New York Times “… perfectly captures the raw possibility of a young woman’s first year in New York, opening up to a whole new world of wine, food, love and heartbreak.”—Mackenzie Dawson, New York Post     "...a raw, shucked, pungent, wild love story."—Marie Claire "Danler... quickly draws you into the sparkling surfaces and the shadowy underbelly of the city... [Tess's] insatiable hunger for tactile, sensual satisfaction dares you to tag along. The journey is high-minded and dirty, beastly and bountiful."—Elle “Danler’s ravishing debut is like inhabiting the heady after-midnight hours of a city drunk on its own charms… [her] descriptions of food and drink go beyond mouth-watering, verging on orgasmic… a first novel [that] tantalizes, seduces, satisfies.”—Leigh Haber, O Magazine

I loved this book, really loved it, but it isn't for everybody. Unfortunately, there are many negative reviews by readers who never should have read or tried to read this book, and it is the fault of the publisher. In boldface on the Amazon page: "A thrilling novel of the senses...Perfect for readers of Kitchen Confidential and Blood, Bones and Butter." Ummm, no. This book is nothing at all like those books - if anything, it is more closely related to Salinger's Catcher in the Rye.What this book is not:It is not an inside look into the secrets of Union Square Cafe, one of Manhattan's top restaurants. The protagonist isn't ever in the kitchen. Also, it is not a "small-town girl struggles with the big city but stays true to herself so she can conquer her career and get the dreamy guy" book. It is definitely not a beach read. What this book is:An exceptionally well-written story of a smart but very troubled woman struggling to establish a life and make personal connections, and mostly failing. She comes of age the hard way, taking her lumps brought on by bad decisions and a toxic environment. She lacks the family support many take for granted, and her loneliness is expressed on almost every page. The pain and dysfunction are so intimately rendered, I would be shocked if the author didn't live much of it herself. Some reviewers have criticized the lack of development of supporting characters, notably the love interest, Jake. This may be a valid critique, but I am going to argue that this may by intentional by the author. A central struggle in this book is the narrator's inability to form true, enduring interpersonal connections that extend beyond the moment, despite her desperation to do just that. The secondary characters are seen through the narrator's eyes, she never gets to see their hidden selves. The aren't well developed because they never let her in.Some reviewers have also complained that there are no likable characters. If you need a hero protagonist who does always the right thing, this is not the book for you - this a grown-up book with realistic people, who (gasp!) make bad decisions. There are multiple accounts of drug use and sex, and if reading about that upsets you, then this won't be for you. But this is not a book about drugs or sex, and both appear realistically, not gratuitously. Not every book is for every person. I loved this book, and will be thinking about it for a long time.

Not worth it![Updated review: 2018]After watching the first episode of the new Starz series based on the book, I felt compelled to elaborate upon my original comment/review.As a current professional in the service industry, it pains me to see how both the book and the show portray the reality of working in a restaurant. Simply put, it is not realistic and is very unfocused - for instance, while it might be plausible that in some alternate universe a new hire would be tasting oysters for the first time in the walk-in with another server/bartender who just so happens to know how to perfectly shuck said oyster, it is, in my opinion, unrealistic that they would have the time to do so given the fact that just seconds before, service was to begin in 7 minutes.A few other things that the show (not book) got right/wrong:* the maitr’d addressing the staff as “friends” - no, does not happen (unless this is common in NYC restaurants)* Tess being tasked with filling the salt shakers as everyone else eats family meal - this is extremely unrealistic even in very upright/pretentious places (usually they have you complete a shift known as a “stage” and then decide to move forward but you are usually not tasked such as this)*Tess’ obvious unease and discomfort came across very realistically and did show how overwhelming beginning to work in the industry can be*Simone’s comments and general attitude were very realistic (every restaurant has that one server who’s been there for 1,000 years and basically runs the others or inspires fear/awe)Will be interesting to see how the series plays out but it is generally enjoyable, if not wrought with many flaws.

I love the language in this book. I love the POV. It's deeply self-conscious, which strikes me as intentional. I find the distinction between the MC's dialogue and her "in the future" reflection sophisticated.Yeah, there's drugs 'n' sex 'n' the headiness of being young. You are not wrong if that doesn't all resonate with you. But the achievement is lovely for those who do identify.Beauty, overblown self-focus, achy freedoms. I'll take it.I'm not a server, BTW. Just an anxious millennial who kinda feels it and likes seeing it laid out in text.

Eh. After hearing and reading all the great reviews (NYTimes, NPR), I really really wanted to like the book and felt some affinity towards the narrator, but couldn't help but feel exhausted at the end of the book (by my responsibility in finishing it!). Seemed like a millenial voice that I ultimately couldn't connect with, but I can't say it wasn't a good beach read.

Ugh.How is this a good book?First part - liked the writing. Beautiful, beautiful writing. But the truth is - the character is dull. And her love interest is even more dull. In fact, quite creepy. Don't understand her. Can't relate. Not interested. I actually wished she would either just shut up or even describe her apartment more. That is how -yawn- she is.The most interesting character is Simone. She could be the entire novel. She inspired, she provoked, and she still baffled - even at the end.Liked the very beginning and towards the end, but a good chunk was insipid. How this book inspired a television series, or discussion, or even a newspaper review - I'll never know.Book tells me there is still hope for those who dream.
