I have been a fan of Ms McElroy & Ms Wilson since I first got my artsy little hands on Image Transfer Workshop: Mixed Media Techniques for Successful Transfers. I value that book tremendously and was more than a little stoked when I heard they had another compilation on the way. As much as I adore Image Transfer Workshop, this new book is equally fantastic (just on different subject matter)!I cannot agree with the other reviewer about the illustrations, though. At all. I LOVE the photos and work used as examples. I don't care if it came from class students or so-called "professionals" - I thoroughly enjoyed all of it and in my opinion, each piece pictured serves as inspirational reiteration of the projects/ideas/techniques presented. Beyond the Introduction and a short instructional on How to Use This Book, there are two major sections: Techniques and Inspirational Projects. The Technique section in broken into three sub-categories: Additives (Aluminum Foil, Drawing Grounds, Ventilation Tape, Faux Encaustics, just to name a few), Resists (Rubbing Alcohol, Petroleum Jelly, Salt, White Craft Glue, etc), and Subtractive or Combination (Painted Leaf, Rust, Sanding, Tyvek, etc). With the Inspirational Projects section containing 4 additional projects spanning ten pages, resources, and an index, this book is as thorough as it is fun to read and look at.The photos clearly show how to use the suggested materials, as well as finished samples. Samples provide adequate examples of a technique, in my opinion. With all the parts I love about this book, advanced and experienced artists beware - I doubt you'll learn many (if any) new techniques. It's a great compilation of techniques, don't get me wrong. There just aren't any new-to-me techniques - although I always enjoy seeing new ways each technique can be presented and used. I like Surface Treatment Workshop because of the vast array of techniques it covers all in one place.On a final note, it's been my experience that if there is something in the book you have questions about or don't understand, emailing Ms McElroy will produce a thorough response, quickly. I'm really glad I got this book - as much for the cool techniques as for the wonderful photographs.

I bought this book used, it is in wonderful condition and the seller shipped it promptly. The actual contents of the book are kind of boggling for an artist of my caliber. There are plenty of neat pictures and this book SHOWS lots of different media types but the instructions (to me) leave plenty to be desired. They just are not detailed enuf for a novice nor are many of the mediums anything I am even familiar with. I would recommend this book for any artist that has real training or is above an intermediate level. Sorry...I cannot recommend this book to a "novice level" multi-media artist.

I love this book! I was hesitant about it because the author's previous book "Image Transfer Workshop" is, in my humble opinion, one of the best books I've invested in (and I invest a lot in books!) and I wasn't sure that a new book could live up to that opinion. I am SO happy to report that this book is another home run, totally out-of-the-ball park winner of a book.The lay out is very well considered and the instructions are superlative - perfectly illustrated with photos that relate directly to the image. I couldn't wait to begin experimenting! One of the things that intrigued me as I read through the book was a description of Venetian Plaster - something I had never heard of before - "...Venetian Plaster gives you a unique finish that cannot be replicated with any other medium....". A tall order in my opinion. I got some of this miraculous stuff though and experimented and now have a new favorite mixed media tool. You can see my experiment from using the instructions on my other blog - [...].I can't wait to try more surface treatments from this book. It's a must have for the bookshelf of artists of all sorts - especially for fine arts, mixed media artists and visual journalers. You just can't go wrong by buying this book!

Great no-nonsense instuctional mixed-media book. This book doesn't waste half its pages on supplies and where to get them, and no other fluff or filler. Clear, straightforward directions. Overall an outstanding workshop that introduces a ton of new and easy techniques. Especially helpful are the troubleshooting tips and variations to the particular technique being discussed. Nothing here requires a lot of investment or expense, mostly using everyday and easy-to-find materials. Nicely illustrated.

Lots of fun stuff and cool effects. This is a really inspirational book. While I don't really like their examples all that much, they offer lots and lots of great ideas.

A well illustrated book with some interesting techniques for creating unusual mixed-media surfaces. The directions are clean and concise while the "troubleshooting" helps you determine what went wrong in your creative process. While some of the techniques are tried and true, others are innovative, resulting in new and different textures and surfaces. Normally I prefer to learn with DVD's, but this book is well worth your time to explore all it's creative possibilites presented by the authors. Most projects can be done with common materials and tools. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring their creative side, or anyone who wants to expand their arsenal of art techniques.

The Surface Treatment Workshop: Explore 45 Mixed-Media Techniques is full of inspirational ideas for preparing backgrounds for mixed-media art pieces, scrapbooking pages, and any other surface you might want to treat. I certainly could be used for fabric preparation with inks and dyes. Techniques include use of both traditional art materails, gels, glazes, etc., and unusual materials found on your household shelves. For a shot of inspiration, this is a good book to have in your collection.

Wonderful book, very insightful and moving. Articulates well what I've learned as a teacher of forty years. In fifty years of childcare, I see more and more clearly how our culture makes it very difficult to grow up to be a happy boy, a normal boy, without the scars of institutional schooling and stoic conditioning.

I felt this book had tons of war stories from the authors regarding what they have seen with boys but not enough on how to correct challenging behavior.

Insightful. Easy to read. Helpful. Betweenthe grandson, 1 preschool class, and K-1 class I suddenly have a lot of little boys in my life. This book not only is helping me with them - it's helping me understand my husband and sons-in-law.

This is a very interesting and well written book. I am a mother of 2 boys and this book actually gave me some great insight into how their minds work. My husband enjoyed it a lot too. It's a great book to have for parents of boys of all ages.

I loved this book! I would have loved to have had it when I was raising my son. I have grandsons and, as a grandmother, I am hoping to use some of the 'tools' in relating to them.From the beginning of time, mankind is pretty much the same and deals with problems pretty much the same. Anyone who has attended public school of any kind as a child, has been hurt emotionally in one way or another. These hurts influence everyone of us for good or for bad. The key is in learning early on how to deal with them.This book is EXCELLENT in teaching one to recognize and help boys to learn how to deal with their emotions. If you are a teacher, parent, grandparent or counselor in any capacity to boy(s), this book will help you to help them. As a mom, I cried remembering how cruel the world was when I was growing up and then, when my son was growing up. Had my parents or I known the things taught in this book, we could have been empowered to empower others to be overcomers.

As a teacher for 15+ years and as a parent of both a son and a daughter for much less than that, I'm especially convinced that it's worth stating plainly: boys and girls are different. In a very simple, thorough, but approachable way, the authors explain what that means in day-to-day life, and they explain how damaging it is to build an educational system around the proclivities of girls while treating boys like something dangerous and/or damaged. I highly recommend this book.

For anyone involved in their upbringing, boys present a number of peculiar challenges. They are disproportionally likely to inflict violence on themselves or others (for example, they account for over 80% of suicides and 95% of homicides in their age groups), they are more likely to use alcohol and drugs, they mature and develop some cognitive skills (such as reading and writing prowess) later than the girls their age, they are much more physical than girls (which cannot be truly accommodated by the educational environment in most schools today). To top it all, boys do not really know how to talk about their feelings, so they are unlikely to identify their emotional problems, let alone find a way of resolving them.The book's merit extends beyond pointing out that the problem exists. The authors suggest some practical ways of helping today's boys. It is respecting their feelings and approaching them more with questions rather than answers and suggestions to tough it out. It is trying to create a loving and safe atmosphere, where boys are more likely to risk opening up. It is helping them create emotive vocabulary, which would help them articulate how they feel. It is creating opportunities for safe failure, which would help boys get to know themselves. It is having some safe places where boys could spend their energy (such as a basement gym or a neighborhood basketball court). It is teaching them emotional courage and empathy, which could help them recognize who they are and build character.Insightful, well articulated and timely. A great book.

I read this book after reading "Reviving Ophelia", "Real Boys", and "Trouble with Boys". "Raising Cain" is well written and based on hands-on experience as well as an admirable amount of research. I would say it's the best of the four books I just mentioned. I had wanted information about this topic because I'm a former teacher who would consistently be assigned what were considered "difficult students" altough I was not a special education teacher. I wish someone had recommended this book to me back then.Happily, I stumbled on some of the methods of handling boys' active behavior from trial and error. Also,I admired the fact that neither author put down any other texts about raising children and adolescents(as did two of the other authors). The tone was very professional but highly readable.

Fancy Nancy uses fancy words. Helps youngsters to learn synonyms that they wouldn't ordinarily know. The stories are relevant to the age group that it is written for. I bought his one as a gift for a student who had worked hard at improving her reading skills and had expressed an interest in the Fancy Nancy series. She was very excited to receive the book.

These books are charming and fun! The illustration has amazing detail and the text portion helps increase vocabulary by using words like, 'exquisite' then explaining that it's a fancy word for beautiful! Great carrying case.

Great book for young readers

I am a beautician and I was just telling my 3 year old Granddaughter not to cut her hair. When I saw this book I had to get it. The story line is so cute and real. What kid hasn't tried cutting their hair.This is my second Fancy Nancy book and I really like this one better. I am glad I bought it and I will buy more soon.

My 4 and 2 year old grandaughters love all the Fancy Nancy books. I love that they are good stories that teach and explain advanced vocabulary to young children. I guarantee, the children will want to read them over and over again.

Sadly, this is another Fifty Shades of Grey, just on the East Coast rather than the West Coast. If you haven't read the other book, this one might be okay. Unfortunately, there were too many similarities that I just kept comparing the two books. The main characters didn't have any depth, so I got bored with them, too. (Minor character Sid is really the only character I liked.)**SPOILERS**This is essentially the book with similarities between 50 Shades:1. Billionaire control-freak (Blake) and "normal girl" just graduated from college (Erica) meet, attracted at first sight.2. Billionaire has a brother and sister, and the brother dates Erica's best friend.3. Billionaire is invested in ex-girlfriend's (Sophia) business.4. Erica goes to different city, Blake follows.5. Billionaire is able to find out info and control Erica (except rather than having people do things for him, he's the hacker).6. Antagonist who is jealous of Blake's status and who Erica works with.7. Everyone seems to be attracted to Erica, Blake comes in to save her from unwanted attention.The author tries to make the reader feel pity for Erica, but I just get bored with her. Poor girl lost her mother to cancer at age 12, stepfather sends her to boarding school. She gets raped in college, but is able to move on and start her own business. Really, the only noticeable difference is at the very end of the book, with Erica's newly-found biological father and stepbrother.

She is alone in the world except for her mom's best friend Maria and her two business partners, Allie and Sid.Enter Blake Landon; he literally bumps into Erica, and the sensual sparks fly. Sexy and devilishly handsome, he is every woman's fantasy man. The bump is short and sweet, but it leaves Erica with fantasy material, as the girl has no time for a social life. Psst, he is a billionaire control freak but a likeable billionaire control freak. He is going to have problems with `all career' Erica and that is just how it is going to be. Her company is her single-minded focus, and she is a driven individual; she doesn't have time for a man. So begins the journey of Erica and Blake meeting.What I like about this book is that the plot was multifaceted. First you had the story line of Erica and her partners trying to get capital to grow their business. Erica and her partners Sid and Allie are having growing pains. They are all newly graduated from Harvard and expected to make their lives in the big bad non-academic world of real life. Each of the partners aren't just cardboard cut out place holders in for the main romance plot. They are three-dimensional characters who have their own lives. Sid isn't as fleshed out as Allie, but I expect that to happen as the series progresses.Then, of course, you have the love story between Blake and Erica. No, this isn't `I fall at your feet and worship you because you are a billionaire time' for Erica. This is `I fight tooth and nail to ignore the pull for the billionaire and stand up for myself time' for Erica. Hey, the girl is a scotch drinker, and I expected nothing less. If she would have drank one of those fruity drinks, then all bets were off. Now I just need to know her brand to know how committed I will be to Erica. Yes, I'm a Scotch snob. Sue Me.Then there was a very interesting plot twist in the book revolving around Erica's past, and guess what? I am not going to spoil it for anyone. But boy, it is a big blow-up-the-book type twist. This was an enjoyable book with characters I can't wait to read more about, as there is a sequel coming entitled Hardpressed.

Utterly disappointing. The female character started off interesting and somewhat 'normal' for this type of novel, but then she just kept changing her personality-which is something i Hate in a story. She waited at least 21 years to suddenly search for her biological dad and he just happens to be found in less than a day and semi well known in Boston (rolling my eyes). And as soon as i saw she was doing this knew what his connection (at least one) would be-maybe there will be more in the 4 other novels, but i will never know because i will not waste my money. In addition, I felt like this was three books squished into 1. A love book centered on hackers, on S/M, and your Boss (with a little fashion thrown in which considering it is the main characters business should be more important). The sex scenes are like rewinding/rereading the same scene.

It’s nice to read a nutrition book that doesn’t have an agenda, is just facts, and let’s me draw my own conclusions about my health from there.This is a great overview & introduction in the nutrition & dietetics field and is a great industry reference for anyone wanting to understand more about the profession and how diet plays into the western-medicine philosophy.

It is suprisingly hard to find a book on diet that isn't trying to push A diet. This one seems pretty agnostic.

When I saw a review that a professer uses this as a suplimental in his class, I thought there would be good information in here. I at least expected a breakdown of the vitamins and minerals and what each does. In my opinion, I thought this was a bunch of fluff. The information was equivalent to "don't eat too much sugar." and "oranges have vitamin C". (Those are not direct quotes btw, they are just examples of the quality that you would be getting.) If you are looking for information with the tiniest bit of depth, keep looking.

Love this new edition! I am a college professor and highly recommend this as a supplemental text for my intro nutrition students.

Best resource available, comprehensive, balanced and well cited.

This volume is a catalogue of an exhibition held at the Morgan Library and the Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmengen. Its centerpiece is the display of about 100 pages of the "Hours of Catherine of Cleves". This famous illuminated manuscript, created around 1440, was commissioned by Catherine of Cleves. The book, previously separated, was purchased by the Morgan Library in two parts; in 1963 and 1970. The book was disassembled for the exhibition, enabling the viewers a rare opportunity to see the individual pages.The first section consists of informative essays concerning the book of hours, its unknown creator and Catherine of Cleves. The initial illustrations relate to objects featured in the decorated pages as well as other attractive contemporary illuminated manuscripts. This is followed by the leaves from the Hours of Catherine of Cleves; these are presented as enlargements. The greater size allows the reader to savour the exceptionally inventive and intricate marginalia as well as the glorious illustrations. Some of the pages have text whereas others consist exclusively of paintings. The greatness of the Hours of Catherine of Cleves makes many of the preceeding manuscripts, fine as they might be, seem somewhat tepid.Although I have not seen the originals, it seems that the colors as reproduced appear natural and truthful. Certainly the quality appears vastly superior to those published in the elderly George Braziller edition which, though showing the pages in the actual size, has colors that seem harsh and unnatural. Additionally the general printing standard of the book under review as well as its paper quality are well above average. This glorious book should be an obligatory purchase for all enthusiasts of illuminated manuscripts.

I agree, that this is a wonderful book and the detailed history is excellent. However, I was a little dissapointed in the quality of the coloured plates. In comparing them to the Hours of Catharine of Cleves:by John Plummer, I found the quality was the almost the same, although I was led to believe they should be more distinct and realistic in colour. John Plummer's book is less expensive, is the actual size and is complete (without the detailed historical background).I am pleased with added information in this book, and if that is of interest, this should be the book to purchased.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my mother. We missed the special exhibit at the Morgan Library and I hoped this would make up for it. Mom is thrilled! Aside from providing beautiful copies of the plates from the book of hours, the book also provides a wealth of historical support and background abouth the book of hours. It is definitely a winner!
