Having seen these amazing works at the Harvard Museum of Natural History, I was seeking more information about creation of the glass marine creatures. I was thrilled to discover Elizabeth Brill's well-written, thoughtful and knowledgable book on the subject. To not only learn about Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka's models (they also created the renowned glass flowers on display at the same museum) but the conservation efforts Ms. Brill undertook to preserve the sea creatures for future generations was, simply put, a gift.In addition, David Brown's photography that accompanies the essays is breathtaking. You can view these glass marine creatures in all of their splendor. Anyone who is interested in the study of marine animals, early glassmaking and incredible glass art, and the efforts to preserve an important and unique collection, or is just curious, should purchase this book. I highly recommend it!
We often see the Harvard glass flowers but this is a great book with detailed photos of the marine models.
Sea Creatures in Glass is perhaps one of the most exquisite ways to see marine animals without visiting the sea! The beauty and history of the pieces in this book are extraordinary. I can only imagine how difficult it was to restore these pieces and it makes looking at each photo even more fun. This book is such a treat! I am definitely going to get another copy of this book for my friend as a gift for Christmas.
Fascinating magical intricate moments in time captured in glass. They look so alive as if floating in the sea! Brilliant photos capture the painstaking attention to detail of the artist Elizabeth Brill. To think that she gathered fragments of these pieces and made them whole again is truly remarkable.I hope this is the first of many!
A gorgeous little book full of spectacular photos of an amazing collection. I want to make a pilgrimage to see the pieces with my own eyes. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in the creatures of the deep, for those who admire the art of craft, the craft of art.
