This trilogy had a lot of potential. The characters are more complex with far more complicated personal problems than one usually finds in Amish fiction. There's more to this story than making pies, but it is centered around a central mystery involving the theft and shooting of horses. Sadly, this very intriguing plot line is never really resolved. The motivation for killing horses not part of the original theft is unresolved, the fact that stolen horses are found running free is not resolved; why other stolen horses are kept hidden and starved while hidden jewels suddenly become part of the plot seems more of an effort to hide the utter lack of control over the horse plot. An editor might have pointed out how all this dangles needing more of an explanation than, "Who knows why they did this?" It might be alright for some characters not to understand what happened, but an author owes something to her readers to make plot make sense. An editor might also have prevented one dead horse suddenly being resurrected without comment in the final book. Apparently the author forgot he'd been shot in one book of the trilogy only to show up in the third! This is really too bad since there was a lot of interesting characterization. Perhaps the author should stick to that kind of writing and give up on mysteries.

The story is set in an Amish community in Montana. They have a lot of interaction with their English neighbors and employers; more than seems like would normal to me. The story focuses on the life of Sadie as she goes from teen to adult. She has many trials along the way. She works as a cook/housekeeper at a large English horse ranch and be comes friends with her co-worker and bosses.I enjoyed this but at times I felt it drug a bit slowly and was too repetitious. At one point it seems that something that happened was forgotten in the next book, don't want to give too much away to state more. Other times there is a lot of action going on. Parts of the story are very sad and I cried with the characters. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Overall I really enjoyed the series. I was glad that I ordered the trilogy together so that I could keep on reading. The characters for the most part we're very believable and you connected to them and their struggles. The reason that I gave the book for stars instead of 5 was from minor editing errors particularly in the third book and the fact that a horse who died earlier in the series was mentioned multiple times in the third book. It's threw me when I first saw his name but I thought maybe he was just named after the first horse because that it happened with other horses. But it referred to him as the same old Charlie a good buggy horse just like always. If it would have said good old Charlie just like his namesake it would have been fine. But clearly a resurrected horse was brought back to pull Ruben's wagon in book 3. But overall it was a good series and I would recommend the read but I'd also recommend fixing the horse.

A great trilogy. Ms Byler does an excellent job following a young Amish woman through many ups & downs in both the Amish & English world. Her love of horses leads her into paths of great joy & serious troubles. I totally enjoyed the the series & will encourage my reading friends to pick up these books.

This is an amazing series full of adventure, heartache, Joys, disappointment, and much Love and godly wisdom. It gives an understanding of how we are all humans with the same problems and needs. I highly recommend it.

Very enjoyable reading. For fans of Amish stories, these books contain mystery, suspense, romance, some humor, and depict the love and unshakable bond within a family. And having the trilogy means you can read one right after the other without having long gaps in between. I highly recommend.

My 86 y.o. Father who has never been much of a reader has almost finished this and wants to know if I can get him more like it.

It was nice having the 3 books in one. The books flowed nicely from one to the next. By having the 3 books in one you didn't have to go searching for the next book,it was right there. It was a very nice story that all ages could read.
