It has taken me about a week to decide how to review this book without giving away essential parts of the plot.I did receive the book for free to read for errors, but this is my honest reaction to a terrific book.I have been doing ARC reading for many of Baker's book since her early offerings in her Bed and Breakfast series, and I have long been impressed by her ability to use and twist the many different sub genres in this field.This Roaring 20s series is my favorite, and it twists normal plot devices in a fascinating way.This is the third book in a series, which can both stand alone as a mystery novel and yet is an intrinsic part of a wonderful whole.I urge readers to read them all, in order, as the mystery of Rose, our brave detective, unfolds in a fascinating way as the books continue.While in many ways this is a traditional British House Party murder mystery, the identity of the murderer here was totally out of left field and promises to play an important part in the next book.Eagerly looking forward to reading that as well.
Who is the Chess Master? How does he know about Rose's secrets? He leaves a message that a murder will take place at Ridgewick Hall and she must solve the murder. If she doesn't, her secrets will be revealed. If she solves it he will give her info about her brother Jimmy. This story kept me glued to the pages from start to finish. Well written. Characters are fleshed out. Come along on this roller coaster. See if you can figure out who the killer is.I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.
I fail to see why there is no other review noting that Rose is not very smart. She gets herself into untenable situations and blurts out information to obviously the worst people at the worst moments. She convinces herself that Person A is the killer while Person B suddenly is threatening her life. This would be not so unusual in a cozy mystery, but compounding it is the fact that Rose, Nellie, is a criminal. She is stealing from a family who may not deserve the money, but it is theirs legally anyway. What will sweet Alice think when she is revealed as an imposter? And how can she self righteously testify against someone else (whole truth, nothing but etc.) all the while knowing you are not who you say you are?Sorry, I don't like her at all. I sympathize with her difficulties in life but can't embrace her choices.
Another great book! Rose is warned of a murder that will happen by a mysterious man who knows all about her and her search for Jimmy. To get the information she seeks she must solve the upcoming murder. How does this mysterious man know her secrets? How does he know about her brother? Who is going to die and can she stop it before it happens? And who will be the murderer? I never saw this coming!
I really like this series and the glimpses of the past. Well written and very likable characters. I read this book on Kindle Unlimited and really enjoyed it. I recommend it to cozy readers and fans of stories set in a glamorized past.
Who is the mysterious Chessmaster and how does he know so much? So many things happen and so many twists and turns it’s hard for Rose to keep going. Keep reading to see what’s going on it’s enjoyable
An exceptionally good story. Not only the drama of waiting for the murder to happen, but who will be murdered. Then who did the murder. Then also what if its a family member that had done the murder. Except in turns out even worse. Then will she find out about her brother? Then even that may be worse than she thinks. Could it be? Hope you try all the books about Rose Beckingham!
Poor Rose. Her secret quest continues. However she now has a problem. Someone knows her secret and her quest. Should she accept their “job� Looking forward to the next book.
