They products are both sold and marketed has changed, so you'll have to first understand his book within the written time period. Next you can then try to understand the laws as they would be applied today.Example: Law of Line Extension says that you shouldn't use same brand name as you extend product line. However, Apple is a counter example. Then again Costco has a sub-brand 'Kirkland' that is very successful. I'm not doubting the rule but it seems it may be conditional.2. The authors give examples and predictions that, with the view we have now in the future, don't play out how they expected. I think they predicted MCI to overtake AT&T as the top long distance phone company.So, just rely on your judgement as you read through the laws and really try to test (evaluate) them in the current environment.This book was recommended by many authors and podcasts I follow so that's what brought me to it. However, I now think there may have been a generation positively influenced by it 20 years ago that have since passed it down to the next generation of marketers/entrepreneurs.Nota bad book though. Read it.

The ‘22 Immutable Laws of Marketing’ is once again making its way through academics and biz leaders as common wisdom for the whole modern enterprise. It's a guide book that should be titled "Never Do This!" while hinting at the remarkable strategies that bring us today's top brands.‘The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing’ is a quick read. The management and strategy job has evolved in interesting ways from this books timeframe. The day of the “Ad Man” fronting your enterprise’s value proposition to customers is over. The “Sale!” is made after a carefully engineered organizational effort. Marketing strategy is a discipline to be trained among everyone that answers an outside phone. Everyone now has a marketing role and here is not a bad place to start spreading the news.A hugely entertaining element is simply that the reader has been fast forwarded through corporate strategies tried, failed and successful. Lotus 1-2-3, VisiCalc, Amiga, Emery Air vs FedEx, Tandem, Wang ... all without smart phones or vast system networks ... strategy winners and losers make for a forensic business case ... if you've been around awhile, you won't believe the book was written just 15 years ago.

Like many other readers I found this book via Tim Ferris's blog. Like most things Tim Ferris, there is more sizzle than steak here.Since I am not a marketing professional, I found some of the content valuable. Especially the ideas that you need to own a single-word concept (not your brand name) in the consumer's mind, that you can't really change perceptions once formed, and that you need to define a category you are first in if the broad category is ruled by someone else.The book is pre-Internet and somewhat dated as others noticed too. This applies mostly to the corporations and products used as examples. The rules of thumb IMO remain viable. The main reason I did not give more stars is that much of the content is self evident, e.g. law of hype (hype is bad), law of resources (you need money to develop and market), etc.

The actual content of the textbook is great, but that great content is invalidated by the terrible examples and incorrect answers in the back of the book. If you need to use this book, avoid following the examples used to answer questions in the solution pages of the book. Also keep in mind that the solutions themselves are frequently wrong.

Firstly, I will say that this is a great book. I'm a computer engineer and when I was a freshman in college this was our introductory book. This book covers the aspects of digital design and essential components very well. Not only is the coverage great in this respect, but is very readable. I'm a tech head and, to be honest, I loved reading this book. No qualms about the authors' writing styles. The only issue I had with this book was with the HDL examples. The HDL examples were code with virtually no explanation. In my opinion, this is very useless considering it is an introductory book into the world of digital design and computer engineering. HDL is definitely not this books strong point, but for the fundamental concepts of digital design, it's a great book. I keep my copy on my bookshelf and don't plan on selling it.

Well written book, not difficult to read especially if you have mathematics background. Good for self study. However, the book has a number of misprints, especially the Indian edition. You don't have to be an electrical engineer to understand the material.

The book is pretty good, it explains concepts thoroughly, this is the exact same version as 5th, except that the exercises are switched around.

What's life without a challenge, am I right?!?Logic Design or Greek, I still haven't figured it out lolLoving this text book!

I bought this last minute as an additional reference for the Civil Geotechnical PE exam. I don't typically perform geotechnical type work in my field and admittedly I didn't read the book thoroughly before the test. I did pass the PE exam and felt this book was a big part of it. Without divulging the nature of the exam questions I will say this book had very useful information in responding to many of the qualitative questions for which normal graduate level textbooks and review materials had nothing. I firmly believe I answered a number of the afternoon questions correctly due to this book. With so much information (and I mean this book talks about everything) this book is definitely a keeper even after the exam and it sits proudly on my cubicle bookcase next to my Engineering Licensure certificate.

I bought this book to use as a quick reference for looking up various specs, practices, and conversions on the job sites.Though a bit expensive, the book is worth its near $60 price tag. If you have ever spent hours digging through old text books or the internet looking for specs or construction techniques then you know it's a pain in the *ss. I bought this handbook because I wanted an all-inclusive source for everything. So far it has been money well spent.With Mr. Day's handbook you can find what you're looking for in a matter of several minutes. The handbook has just the right amount of knowledge about particular subjects, in my opinion. Using this quick reference has made my job much easier. It travels with me to all my jobs and sits on my desk at the office just in case I need it.So far everything that I've needed to know has been covered in the handbook. I even thought I'd stump it with geosynthetics, but Mr. Day had it covered. I would recommend this book to any engineering firm or contractors needing a quick and easy field guide to geotechnical engineering.I'll update my review as needed.

A must have book for any geotechnical engineer taking the PE exam. Very helpful for answering the more obscure qualitative questions on the depth section of the PE exam. This book was likely the difference in me passing the exam on my first attempt. Highly recommend buying this book, tabbing it up, and bringing it with you on exam day.

This book has a lot of good information in it regarding all phases of geotechnical engineering, however; this book does a terrible job explaining deep foundations (not contained in one section) and more complex versions of retaining walls. In the Mechanically Stabilized Earth wall section it states you should check the pull out resistance of the reinforcement and then fails to provide the formula for doing so. Overall though I believe having this book as a resource will translate to a better score on the afternoon geotechnical session.

Bought this for the Geotechnical PE, so happy I did, it has a good glossary and appendix, if you have time, buy early there are tons of problems, but don't hesitate to buy late

Fit the bill and assisted in taking the PE. I am not a geotech and the format of the book seems dated and possibly foreign. Worth having at the PE exam.

This book is loaded with information. No Geotechnical engineer should be without it.

It appears to be a fairly comprehensive book. The only reason I'm rating it three stars is that the font in the paper format is tiny. I have trouble reading it even with my readers. I find the figures are even more difficult to see. I would also note that this is a fairly thick volume, which speaks to it's contents, but as such is not something that I'd keep in my briefcase on a daily basis.

De León's writing is comprehensive, scientific, and emotional. His ethnographic sections humanize the real people that experience the undertaking of immigration. The book serves as an exposé of the U.S. government for those who weren't aware of the depth of border control policies; the graphic descriptions of living, dying, and death in the desert supply the gruesome science of it all. The photography provided by Jason and Michael Wells transports the reader to the desert and the lives of the immigrants that Jason got to know. I can say for sure that this book has cemented U.S. border policy as a human rights issue in my mind, and I am also interested in his Undocumented Migration Project. After seeing him speak at my university, I am moved by the subject, by his methods, and by his success. I look forward to more of his work.

This book is excellent. It frames how the US got to this ridiculous situation with the border with Mexico and provides real insight in to the experience of people who cross. Occasionally uses highly academic terms, but overall an excellent read.

Jason is a former professor of mine, and I was really excited to see that his book had come out. I was not disappointed. It links border policy with its incredibly important humanistic implications. It uses theoretic analysis of bureaucracy alongside some innovative fieldwork to illustrate a truth for people who don't know what's really going on on the border, and in our federal governmental structure. I recommend it to anyone interested in immigration, border issues, or just the general study/intrigue about how seemingly benign power structures perpetuate violence and injustice. Not a happy read, but well well worth it.

I think this book gives great insight on what migrants have to go through when crossing them border to get to America. Even though I do not agree with what the author said about some things, this book was written very well and drew me in from the moment I started reading this book. I would definitely recommend people to read this book to learn a bit about migration and immigration policies.

I think she still has it. Really not sure at all. Maybe. I should ask her. She loves all things anthropology. She is an anthropology major so if you know someone like that, then maybe they will want it too.

If you have any interest in the stories of people from Mexico, Central American or South America who form our wave of migrants from the south, this is a MUST READ book. Fascinating first person stories and great archaeological context. Highly recommended.

A fuller review to come, hopefully on Small Things Considered, but I received a copy of this from the creator and really enjoyed it. The illustrations throughout are detailed and evocative, in a style just like the cover's. The text manages to introduce a really complex symbiotic relationship in relatively simple terms. In some cases this includes breaking info down into real simple terms or an analogy. But in other parts it doesn't avoid all the jargon of biology or words that may be unfamiliar to a child. Nonetheless I think it would work with an inquisitive older child and a parent that would read it along and help explain.The story is divided into two parts, the first from the point of view of the Vibrio bacteria and the second from the point of view of the squid, tying everything together in showing how the light produced by the bacteria is beneficial to the squid's survival. A final section, still superbly illustrated, goes into much greater detail with the science with material suitable for an older child or even someone into high school age.

The book is truly unique.I bought a copy from the publisher's website and found the book to be a beautiful combination of storytelling, watercolour illustration and rich scientific content.I can't recommend the book highly enough for all lovers of science and nature - both children and adults alike!

I don't read a lot of YA that isn't recommended to me by others because I tend to dislike a large amount of the common tropes that seem to be in every YA novel ever.I wish this one had been different. Let me start by saying that the actual prose was solid, it was simple but it wasn't awkward or clunky. I never felt that the narration was talking down to the reader or treating them like they were stupid. I also found myself not hating Kricket, even if I felt like the author betrayed her more often than she helped. I love the idea of tackling the difficulties of being a kid who grew up in the pathetic excuse of a 'foster' system, and having a biracial lead could have been so powerful. Kricket is smart and ferocious, she doesn't like being used and often lets her independence get in the way. She is treated with a bit of special snowflake syndrome - I'm willing to look over it since she had actual faults and most of the 'special' was forced onto her by others (but really platinum blondes aren't really that rare, 5'10" is not short by any average, the college she was looking at offers scholarships and housing for foster kids and I'll get to the most beautiful thing in a bit) - but I felt like she had an honestly solid base character. I don't mind female characters who are tough and self dependent especially when it gets them into trouble when it needs to.That said, for whatever horrible reason the author decided that it was completely okay to oversexualise Kricket to an absurdly creepy point. The only men who weren't interested in her were gay. Everyone else wanted a piece of her because she was just so beautiful they just couldn't help themselves. No one had any difficulty touching her - even after the author stated in lore that touching was something that was not acceptable between casual friends or with strangers. What's worse is when the boys weren't fighting over her bra and panties, they were using magical x-ray glasses to scan for her virginity. I can't even begin to talk about how creepy and wrong it is and how Kricket feels violated but it's instantly dropped and forgotten. I don't even know where to start my rant on this, because this is aimed at TEENAGE GIRLS. Why are we still writing and pretending like there is any way to tell if someone is a virgin or not?? Why are we still acting like it's okay to attach any value to something so pointless, and why do we insist on writing fantasy that is so incredibly sexist? I was beyond disgusted that it was brought up more than once and held over her head, it's beyond gross. On top of this, there is this suffocating romance that should not have even been included.The lead male Trey pulls her around, forces her gaze, continuously reminds her that she's small and weak and female and she needs a man to protect her (a sentiment that is echoed by every other male around her). He is constantly yelling at her and derailing her, invalidating the way she thinks and speaks because it's not 'ladylike'. He kidnaps her and then spends the first half of the book saying he isn't and telling her that the other side were the ones who were going to hold her prisoner. His side was just going to punish her. He gets ridiculously over protective of her almost instantly, and at SEVERAL points he strips her down while she's unconscious. His role in the plot to be a man who protects invalidates Kricket's own characterization at several points and honestly, there is no sense in writing them into a romance.What little plot there was could have been actually interesting, a little typical but it could have been so much more than it was. This book felt like a set up but it did very little world building aside from a few info dumps every few chapters. So much of the plot was interrupted by Kricket being treated like a piece of meat for literally every male character in the book. The universe could have been cool, some cross between Victorian and the ultra modern but it was so heavy in archaic sexism that there was never any time to explore it.I'm too frustrated to even go on at this point. The author did a terrible job at writing what could have been a really amazing book. I am so sick of YA authors falling back on age old tropes that need to die out already, they are overdone and frankly disgusting. I am so sick of seeing fantasy and scifi universes being riddled with sexism, especially with female leads. It's been done to death and frankly I don't see why it's included. Kricket literally has magical hair and powers but women in the universe are just objects to be married.If this book had spent more time on the plot and honest character developments and had fought against typical YA tropes it would have been so much better.

*I received a free copy of this title in a Goodreads giveaway. All opinions given here are my own*I didn't love this book, but I didn't hate it. I enjoyed that Kricket was a foster child from a harder place than many people ever experience, but I thought that could have translated better into who she was as a person. This could have developed into a very interesting and character driven coming of age story, but it just didn't quite manifest.Kricket's inner monologue indicated that she had hardened her heart, but she didn't seem all that hard-hearted to me, as she started to trust her captors far too easily. As a foster parent myself, perhaps I'm just more familiar with the trust issues these kids have and the attachment issues that follow, so it was very disconnected for me. Also, her naivete was unsettling. She would not have been that ignorant of how to play games she faced in her "home world." Foster children are survivors, and while she might have not known the details and specifics of the games being played, there is most often a well honed knowledge of how to play them.I did not like the male-domination that drove the majority of this book. While Kricket herself seemed to be a feminist, as the reader, I could never quite tell when her feminism would manifest and when she would play the victim in need of saving.Another aspect that I didn't quite understand was the complete fascination with her body. Kricket's body is lusted after constantly. And she is naked more than once in the presence of her love interest, but, perhaps because it is a YA novel and not an adult novel nothing happens. Most concerning for me (especially for an audience of young female readers) is that one of these times she actually falls asleep fully dressed in the arms of her love interest and awakens completely naked and lying next to him in bed. He is fully dressed, but explains that he cut her clothes off because it "...looked uncomfortable." This reeks of taking advantage of a sleeping woman and all my hackles rose, but Kricket is not appalled or offended or scared...Instead,"Was it hot?" I ask between kisses. "Cutting it off me?"Are you kidding me?!?! Was this supposed to develop sexual tension? Yuck...that whole scene. Yuck.Overall, I didn't hate the story. I might read more in the series, but I won't search it out. If I come down to needing something to read and there aren't any better options available in the library, I may pick up the second book...we'll just have to see.For conservative readers: See above...

The Kricket series (Under Different Stars, Sea of Stars, and Darken the Stars) is the perfect blend of dystopia, science fiction, YA love, and engaging story telling. The characters are believable, imperfect but gifted. They evolve throughout the series through satisfying plot points (warring factions believing a prophesied outcome and unforgiving family dynamics) and lyrical vulnerability (from Kricket "I’m stone, remember? Nothing touches me.” It’s not true. I have a paper heart and he has written notes all over it... and from Trey "I’ve said too much. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I know that I should’ve softened that. I could’ve made something up or omitted parts and made it a nicer version of the truth, but I didn’t want to; I want her to know me for who I am. I don’t want her pity. I just want acceptance. This is my truth. I have entrusted her with it. Now I want to see what she does with it."). The villain, Koyn, pursues Kricket with a ferocious, all-consuming intensity that recalls the futility of a moth refusing a flame (“There’ll be no martyrs here, Kricket. I’ll tear your heart off your sleeve and bury it deep in my chest. Your savage heart will beat for me. Run if you think you can—I’ll hunt you down.”). I had to keep reminding myself that I was attracted to a madman. Talk about incredible character breadth. This is one love triangle I will not forget. The ending has driven a number of frustrated reader to start an online petition begging the author to write a fourth book. I found it incredibly refreshing and brave. It is not a simplistic happily ever after (HEA). Given Kricket’s tumultuous journey and the impossible decisions she faced, I would have found a HEA trite and disappointing. Incredible series well worth a read.
