Review

“Great fun!” (Ann Leckie, author of Ancillary Justice)“A quietly profound, humane tour de force that tackles politics and gender issues with refreshing optimism.” (The Guardian)“Becky Chambers’ debut is a joyous, optimistic space opera ... Although it isn’t shy about tackling Big Questions, Planet is a heart-warming debut novel that will restore your faith in science fiction (specifically) and humanity (in general).” (Tor.com)“One of the most enjoyable, brilliantly realized spacey SF novels I’ve read in ages.” (James Smythe, author of The Echo and The Explorer)“Humane and alien, adventurous and thoughtful, vast in its imagination and wonderfully personal in the characters it builds. But above all else, it is joyously written and a joy to read.” (Claire North, author of The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August)“[A] wonderfully imaginative and quirky novel [...] It is hard to believe that this is Becky Chambers’ first novel, as it is so well constructed, imaginative, and fluently written.” (Strange Horizons)“There are so many amazing things about this book which I have tried to cover in my review, but to sum it up in one word I found this book to be: Perfect!” (Fantasy Book Review (Book of the Month; 10 out of 10))

A rollicking space adventure with a lot of heartWhen Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn’t expecting much. The patched-up ship has seen better days, but it offers her everything she could possibly want: a spot to call home, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy and some distance from her past. And nothing could be further from what she’s known than the crew of the Wayfarer. From Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the chatty engineers who keep the ship running, to the noble captain Ashby, life aboard is chaotic and crazy—exactly what Rosemary wants. That is, until the crew is offered the job of a lifetime: tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet. Sure, they’ll earn enough money to live comfortably for years, but risking her life wasn’t part of the job description. The journey through the galaxy is full of excitement, adventure and mishaps for the Wayfarer team. And along the way, Rosemary comes to realize that a crew is a family, and that family isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the universe . . . as long as you actually like them.

The title "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" gives you fair warning: this is a road trip book. The road trip just happens to involve a small spaceship (the Wayfarer) that makes small hyperspace bypasses for a living. And while there aren't any Vogons among the ship's crew, there are several non-humanoid aliens, including an adorable multi-armed chef thing and a sexy female lizard person. The focal character is Rosemary, a young human woman who has chosen to travel far from home in order to escape the stigma of a scandal back on Mars. Rosemary's first space journey just happens to coincide with the Wayfarer's Big Break--an opportunity to build the first bridge the multi-species Galactic Commons (GC) and an enigmatic (and possibly very angry) alien race that dwells near the galactic core. The main selling points of "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" are the imagination Becky Chambers puts into the development of her alien characters and the relationships she creates between her human and her non-human characters. The navigator, for example, is from an alien species that infects itself with a virus that allows it to see spatial structures invisible to all other species. The Doctor-Chef (the ship's medical officer and cook) has six limbs and multiple throats that make human speech a bit difficult. The pilot is from a reptilian species with a complex family structure that involves intense parent-foster child relationships but no parent-biological child relationships. All of the ship's humans that have romantic entanglements with non-humans , including one with an AI, one with her shoes (that's a joke, sort of), and one with a member of an irresistibly gorgeous humanoid species that communicates through skin color. The emphasis is less on how weird aliens are, but on what people (or sentients) growing up in very different circumstances can teach us, both about ourselves and about the nature of life. This description may make my 3-star rating seem a bit stingy, especially after I say that Chambers writes well and that there are moments of real warmth, humor, and excitement in the book. Still, I had a hard time reading "Angry Planet." So much goes into making the aliens interesting that not a lot is left over for plot, action, or individual character. There's not much of a story beyond what I've already told you, and the most vivid human characters are secondary: ditzy Kizzy, pint-sized Jenks, and angry, angry whatshisname the algae tech. Rosemary makes a couple of daring choices during the course of the novel, but daring is no substitute for depth. High expectations about how her scandal is going to play out mostly fizzle. There's just not a lot of juice here. So, while I might give the novel a 7 on a scale of 1-10, it gets a 3 on Amazon's 1-5 scale.Bottom line: Worth at least a browse; weakly recommended.

TL;DR: If you're looking for a complex book to fully explore the deep philosophical issues it touches...this isn't it. If you're looking for an enjoyable read that (if you so choose) can remind you that those deep philosophical issues exist...it'll do fine.At core this book is a fun, silly romp across space. The basic setup is classic/borderline-cliché: the reader is introduced to the working class crew of a patchwork ship as they embark on their chance to make it big. Along the way we're given hints at many different cultures.NOTE: I've tried to limit spoilers but there may be some small ones after this point.Sadly a few cultures appear as simple cardboard stand-ins for attitudes and viewpoints. But this can be forgiven as they are not the main drivers of the story (even when they are shown as the main drivers of the galaxy). There are also hints of other cultures that could be plumbed for a bounty of interesting stories but are mostly left alone in this book (perhaps future volumes will give more thought to the Exodans, Aeluons, etc.).Only three cultures are explored in any kind of depth. The soon-to-be-extinct Grum provide us with a truly enjoyable character (Dr Chef who, as the name implies, serves as the ship's doctor and cook). Unfortunately, the Grum culture only serves as an object lesson in self-destructive behavior. The reptilian Aandrisk show us an alternate definition of family, one that is explored in more depth than any other culture in the book. Although that concept of family (fluid, polyamorous, adult-centered) will be offensive to some, the real problem is the role it plays in the story - or rather the non-role it plays: one could easily delete the chapter that focuses on the Aandrisk and lose nothing from the story. Finally, there is the technology-focused, geeky, libertarian modder culture at the fringes of humanity. The modders are presented such that we're not merely to take them sympathetically but any significant negative views of modders are consistently shown as fundamentally wrong. The biggest failings in cultural presentation center around the Toremi and the Sianat. The Toremi are newly admitted members of the Galactic Commons and their admission is controversial due to their continued intraspecies wars. Although the fundamental problem is presented as their inability to find peaceful ways to resolve differences and/or acceptance of differences there is a strong undertone that implies that what the Toremi really need to do is drop their strange beliefs. I suppose one could read this in a way that is not anti-religion but it'd take some effort. Even then, my objection isn't to an anti-religious outlook (if I objected to that it'd seriously restrict my reading options). My objection is the lengths to which the book goes to present the notion of accepting that the beliefs and views of others are to be respected...except in this case.Worse still is the Sianat. We're only given slight hints at their culture but the climax of that storyline is intentionally telegraphed well in advance. The Sianat are a symbiotic pairing of a normal sized being and a microbe. In effect, the Sianat are beings that have contracted a rather interesting disease. The disease reconfigures their brain which allows them to perform impressive feats, including navigating the ‘sublayer’ (hyperspace), but also reduces their lifespan. The Sianat believe this relationship is sacred and should never be severed even if it means dying decades earlier than they would naturally. There is, of course, a 'cure' but the Sianat crew member refuses it. After talking up the importance of respecting this belief the author has one crew member force it on the nearly-dead Sianat. And then...nothing. The Sianat recovers and has no animosity towards the one who violated their core belief in such a personal way. We don't even see the Sianat struggle with their own feelings over what happened. Instead we see a being 'recovering' and seemingly happy to be rid of a symbiot that's been part of them and helped shape their every thought since childhood. This, I think, is the single biggest failing in the book. There's more I could write about this book. Great strengths like the truly complex and sympathetic character of Jenks who is fundamentally a part of modder culture yet refuses to be modded even to correct a genetic defect or the odd yet tender love between Jenks and the ship’s AI. And also great weaknesses like the cliché that is Corbin (an angry, often mean, self-centered perfectionist who is forced to face his father issues, has an epiphany and is suddenly a changed man). But I'll leave it there as this is long enough. So, given all my grumbles, why 4 stars? Because it's still a fun read. Would I suggest this book be added to the syllabus for a 21st century lit class? No. Would I suggest someone looking for a fun read grab a copy? Absolutely.

It's a mediocre sci-fi story for SJWs. I'm reading along waiting for something to like and all get is poorly veiled preaching about diversity. There are moments when you see the author could be good, maybe great, but then she feels compelled to awkwardly steer the story toward short "teaching moments" about LGBT tolerance, racism, and other post-millennial tolerance BS. I suspect the high rating is due to SJW listings rather than the quality of the story.

I have purchased a lot of travel guides and have done a lot of traveling in my life. However, this is one of the most disappointing, poorly written, travel guide I have ever used. First of all, the majority of the book is lodging and dining info, mainly expensive places with little info for the budget traveler. Most of this info could be found via the internet with greater accuracy, depth, variety, etc. That was about 2/3's of the book. For some some of the more important spots like Charleston, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Savannah there was little info about history, what to see and do, etc. And most of the info was old and inaccurate. I was able to get more info, using my iPhone. Take my advice, skip this piece of poop guide and use the internet. You will be much better off in the long run. Another piece of advice, skip Myrtle Beach, SC totally! It is nothing but a bunch of hotels, bad food places, cheap beach items and miniature golf courses.

Useless book but no big deal. It was so cheap. I will donate it to my local library. But the good news.. both North and South Carolina are beautiful states to visit. The Biltmore Estate in Asheville NC was fantastic. The azaleas were at their peak.

Few photos, few maps. Few photos and maps. Don't has one summary of the most important items. Don't has the most important museums.I do not recommend.

This is a poorly written travel guide with inadequate information and with graphics (or lack there off) which makes it difficult to use. There is basically no color in the entire book except the front and back covers. The Fodor's guide is of much better quality in its writing and graphics and a superior investment of your money and time. Also, when I purchase a travel guide, I am not purchasing a political magazine or book (I can get those elsewhere). The Frommer's guide is full of political statements which can be insulting and condescending and is definitely not for anyone who may consider themselves conservative or Republican (or as the Frommer guide calls them: "far right-wing racists"), but if you are a liberal ("progressive" good guys according to Frommer), this may be the guide for you. That is, if your "progressive" eyes have the patience to go through this book without falling asleep or getting lost what you are trying to find. If you have the misfortune like myself to purchase this book, rip out the nice map and keep it, while you throw away the rest of the book into the garbage can or better yet the recycling bin (yes, we "far right-wing" people do like recycling).

The book was ok. It just didn't make clear the massive building of condos and other buildings in places where we thought the coast was clear. Matbe our misread. The outer banks were the pits.

We ordered this item almost a month prior to our vacation departure date. It never arrived. What to do on vacation is useless if you are not on vacation!

Arrived in perfect condition; true to Frommer's form was just what I wanted.

Just a few pages were torn out at the end of the volume-not critical or so it seems to me

#7,044 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Fannie Flagg is a superb writer and I thoroughly enjoy her books. This is the last one I read and, perhaps its predecessors were so great that my level of expectation was unreasonably high. While I love her writing and this is a good book, I liked all the prior books she has authored much more. I do not want to diminish the enjoyment you are likely to get from reading it and I do recommend it to any reader who is seeking to escape from the day to day anxieties of work, family, etc. I will say that if you have not read all of Fannie Flagg's books that precede this one, I strongly encourage you to start with them in date sequence and read them all. You will be delighted and they make great items to pass on to friends, family, senior citizen centers, etc.

I enjoyed this particular Fannie Flagg book because it was told from the point of view of a twelve year old girl growing up in the south. As she ages her observations change, but I particularly enjoyed her view of life as a preteen. About the time you think she really sees life for what it is, she gives a twelve year old explanation and/or observation of someone not quite understanding as much as it first appears. She has a keen sense of humor and yet her life has not been all that it should have been for a child. It is an enjoyable, fast read with a lot of color and sadness for someone so young. Very well written.

I love all of F.Flagg's books. I am still amazed after reading so many of her books, that she has such a wealth of material to draw upon from her childhood in the South and the people she either new or made up. Her characters are so real and she gives you an incredible insight into time, place and people. If someone is looking for an enjoyable read, her books fit the bill. They are hopeful and optimistic and filled with heroes and heroines but there is also a lot of philosophy behind her characters, her words and she simply makes you believe in the human race again.

Although it is not always a good idea to judge a first book by comparing it with later efforts, sometimes it shows us something about the growth and polishing of the author. This reader is already enamored with Fanny Flagg's spot-on observations and appreciation of small towns, cultural quirks, and what makes people and places so familiar to us (even if we have never been there). I was curious to see if this book, which I understand is Flagg's first, would be as enjoyable as her latest (All Girl's Filling Station Reunion). Miracle Man pleased me very much with Flagg's diving into the life of Daisy Fay, an eleven-year-old girl who emerges from a crazy and difficult childhood into young womanhood with her sense of life and dreams still intact. The book is full of interesting characters, some of whom you want to hug, or slap. Some of the characters, to me, were so over-the-wall they were more like caracatures; Flagg's people in later novels are dialed down a little, making them more believable. I gave this book four stars because Flagg's writing seems to be "in progress," which it was. But she certainly drew me in with Daisy Fay, whose changing voice, viewpoints, and understanding of the world went straight to my heart.

Fannie Flagg does an excellent job writing from the perspective of a young girl. Daisy Fay is a product of a marriage of a woman who was chronically disappointed in her drunken, dreamer husband and her father who was the drunk. Even though Daisy had several events in her life that would have flattened another girl but Daisy maintained a sense of optimism.

For sheer entertainment and a laugh-out-loud good time, this is the book to read. I think Fannie Flagg is always witty and heartwarming, but this, her first novel, has to be the most humorous book ever.Daisy Fay Harper's story is told via her diary which begins in 1952 when she is eleven-years-old and ends in 1959 when she leaves Mississippi to begin her long-awaited future. Along the way, the reader is treated to a hodgepodge of beautifully-drawn characters including would-be socialites, restaurant operators, wayward preachers, theater people, back-alley abortionists, and more.Whether it's rising from the dead, riding half-naked on horseback through the middle of town, or competing for a longed-for scholarship in the Miss Mississippi pageant, Daisy Fay is about the most endearing character to ever leap from the pages of a novel. She is stubborn, feisty, loving, loyal, and focused. Most of all, her coming of age is an accurate portrayal of Southern life in the 1950's. It has not been sanitized to be politically correct or rewritten to avoid offense. It is truthful and sincere and the most side-splittingly funny novel I've had the pleasure of reading.Whether you grew up in the South or not, this microcosm of small-town life in the 1950's will touch your heart. So join Daisy Fay, her struggling mother and her father, the Miracle Man, for a trip back to a time and era that is too rich with human emotion to ever forget.

I bought this book years ago and it was the first Fanny Flagg book that I had read. I recently reordered it so that I would have it in my collection of Fanny Flagg books. It's a wonderful story about coming of age. I enjoyed it years ago and I enjoyed it again on the repeat read. Fanny Flagg is one of my favorite authors and I recommend any of her books to anyone who enjoys a good laugh and a good cry. She has a way of making everything come to life in a way that seems real and down to earth.

I was disappointed with this book and the way it was written. The author wrote, that is, I read it similar to a daily and almost predictable uneventful dairy of some years. It was difficult to sit through as nothing of excitement or twists were around the corner as compared to her more popular, which I had read before this (The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion, and Fried Green Tomatoes); perhaps it was written deliberately as opposite to it, but it is one thing to have lived her life as such, it is another to fill pages that I felt went rather nowhere.

The Rise and Fall of Athens: Nine Greek Lives, by Plutarch

About the Author

Plutarch (c.50-c.120 AD) was a writer and thinker born into a wealthy, established family of Chaeronea in central Greece. He received the best possible education in rhetoric and philosophy, and traveled to Asia Minor and Egypt. Later, a series of visits to Rome and Italy contributed to his fame, which was given official recognition by the emperors Trajan and Hadrian. Plutarch rendered conscientious service to his province and city (where he continued to live), as well as holding a priesthood at nearby Delphi. His voluminous surviving writings are broadly divided into the "moral"works and the Parallel Lives of outstanding Greek and Roman leaders. The former (Moralia) are a mixture of rhetorical and antiquarian pieces, together with technical and moral philosophy (sometimes in dialogue form). The Lives have been influential from the Renaissance onwards.

As with any historical work, this edition of Plutarch should be reviewed for two things: the quality of the edition, including the translation, introduction, notes, etc, and how enjoyable reading the work is. Of course, anyone who wants to read Plutarch is going to do so. Therefore this review is targeted at people looking for the right edition of Plutarch, and those looking for a book that's simply fun to read. This edition is perfectly adequate and a great value although the introduction and maps are both meager and largely unhelpful. The translation by Ian Scott-Kilvert is easy to read and clear. The notes are helpful and are put in as footnotes, rather than endnotes, so the reader doesn't have to flip to the back of the book constantly. The selection of Lives is great for anyone interested in classical Athens. It includes Theseus, Solon, Themistocles, Aristides, Cimon, Pericles, Nicias, Alcibiades, and Lysander (the Spartan). Price-wise, the book is also quite cheap.Plutarch is not one of the most popular Greek writers, but for anyone interested in the history of ancient Greece or in the classics more generally, he is very helpful. His Lives make it easy to learn about the history without reading the longer books of Thucydides, Herodotus, and Xenophon. Plutarch does tend to view his subjects through rose-tinted glasses, but overall his portrayals are fair. He gives both sides to a story when there is disagreement among the sources he used. All in all, he is a great historian and anyone interested in ancient Greek history should enjoy reading him.

Even though I liked this book, Plutarch really does not know his subjects that well. Plutarch enjoys making each of his characters into moral lessons. So, there may be truth behind the writing but do not take it full on. Takes a story and takes bad qualities and rewrites to a moral lesson. Plutarch emphasizes qualities for his own purposes. Read critically.

I'm a college prof and assign Plutarch to my students. The Penguin editions are not as good as the Oxford ones. Oxford has MUCH better footnotes, and the translations are more accurate.

a must.

very good condition

very good

It's a classic and it's Plutarch.

This book does a disservice to the academic community. Obviously intended for undergraduates or those who may have some interest in the classics, Penguin has chopped up some of Plutarch's Parallel Lives of the Greeks and Romans and presented them as a history of the Rise and Fall of Athens. There are two primary problems with this method of presentation.First, Plutarch's aim in writing this work was to highlight the parallels between Greek and Roman public figures and show in each the importance of a virtuous character. By selecting only the Greek lives Penguin deliberately subverts the author's explicit intention.Second, Plutarch's lives are meant, not as history, but as moral exemplars. By no means is this text anything like an account of The Rise and Fall of Athens. The reader will gain no insight into what made Athens so distinctive and important to Western civilization. Even Thucydides' account of the Peloponnesian war gives more insight into Athens' distinctiveness (see Pericles' Funeral Oration) and, moreover, is a work of real history.I am not sure what the editors at Penguin were thinking in selecting these lives and selling the book as the Rise and Fall of Athens (a hackneyed phrase if ever there was one). Interested readers should turn to one of the many versions of the Lives available on the internet before wasting their money on this dismemberment of Plutarch.

Nafisi has written not an autobiography, but a story of her love affair with certain books and authors. She divides her life into four important phases, and the four books or authors that influenced her during that time in her life. It is a mix of personal memories, important moments in Iranian history, what she was reading at the time and how it colored her impressions. She begins with what would be the next-to-the-last sequentially, the start of her home class and the reading of Lolita. That Nafisi is an excellent literature professor shines through from the beginning. She doesn't merely mention the books, she discusses them, as though with a class, discussing plot, characters, details, meaning. I, who had never been interested in Lolita or Nabokov, became convinced of his worth solely due to her enthusiasm and passion for his works. She follows with the Iranian revolution and the subsequent "trial" of Gatsby in her classroom. Henry James accompanies the times following the revolution, the war with Iraq, her feelings of uselessness and her return to teaching. She ends with Jane Austen, more about her home class, how she ended up in America and where all her "girls" are now.Though this could have easily been a depressing book, about life in Iran, it is not. Instead, Nafisi has written about the beauty and hope of the novel, how it affected her and how she wanted it to affect her students.Nafisi is a kindred spirit to all us ardent bibliophiles. She expresses in words the passion, exhilaration and transfiguration I often feel during and after reading a novel and has lit a fire in me to re-read several classics she mentioned. This is definitely a five star book!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this memoir. Sadly I had not read Nabokov's Lolita at the time I read Nafisi's book. (I have since corrected that status.) Reading Nafisi's book inspired me, not only to read Lolita for the first time, but to add several new titles to my To Read List. (Coming from a science background, my exposure to great literature is a bit deficient.) Nafisi clearly has a passion for great literature.. and she introduced me to some titles of which I was previously unaware. Additionally, and importantly, the book offers a look into the chaos of civilian life during the Iranian Revolution (1979 and through 1980s). One can only feel empathy for Iranians under those circumstances... and particularly for females who were targeted for especially harsh treatment under the regime. In the end, I found myself wishing that I had been able to sit in on Dr. Nafisi's informal classes conducted in the living room of her Tehran home. What great fun-- and what a great learning experience -- that would have been..

I chose to read Reading Lolita in Tehran because I am currently in the middle of reading Lolita. I am very happy that I chose to read this book, it is beautifully written and powerful. This book details the authors, Azar Nafisi’s experiences in Iran after the revolution and her move to America. The book focuses on a class she teaches in her home, during the class they read forbidden western classic books including Lolita. This class gave Azar and her students a chance to take a break from he restrictions of the Islamic State, and gives them the freedom to express their individuality and opinions. I would highly recommend this book, especially to those who value individuality, individual freedom, women's empowerment, and those who appreciate he power of fiction. Personally, I plan on rereading this book in the summer after I finish reading Lolita, so that I can better appreciate Reading Lolita in Tehran. Azar Nafisi's writing style lacked a lot of dialog, but made up for it with lots of descriptive language and powerful comparisons. The dialog that was included was appropriately placed within the memoir. Azar Nafisi is a talented story teller and while you read her book you can really envision the situations she was in and experience her feelings. A powerful composition made to compare Azars students to classic Greek characters is “Their mistakes, like the tragic flaw in a classic traded, become essential to their development and maturity.” (Nafisi 223). She uses Greek characters hamartia’s to relate to her young students. The student’s choices and mistakes help them become who they are by the end of their final class. Another great comparison was used to compare the students to some of Jane Austen's characters, “Austen’s protagonists are private individuals set in public places. Their desire for privacy and reflection is continually being adjusted to their situation within a very small community which keeps them under its constant scrutiny. The balance between the public and private is essential to this world.” (Nafisi 267). This comparison was used to show how important he class was for students to have their own private space to be themselves without strict laws getting in the way. The examples Azar uses are good for keeping the reader engaged and help them develop a clear image of Azar’s students. The most appropriate audience for this book is someone who doesn't expect a lot of intense action or dialog, but can appreciate hearing personal complex thoughts and feelings. Even though I've never been in any situations similar to Azar Nafisi I was able to feel for her and think of points in my life that I felt similar emotions to hers. For example, I can relate to her students and herself feeling trapped without a private life. Being in high school while being controlled by adults can feel like I have no private life, but this is so different and less intense compared to Azar Nafisi’s experiences, regardless she makes it easy to relate to her emotions while reading the book. Azar did an incredible job of describing her students on a very personal level. She made it easy to understand their internal and external struggles. To a degree you were able to choose who to like and dislike, but most of Nafisi’s descriptions determined who you would trust and distrust. Nafisi’s explanations of characters struggles helped me better understand the characters as a whole, like this explanation of a characters relationship with wearing her scarf and the governments mandated dress code “…the revolution that imposed the scarf on others did not relive Mahshid of her loneliness. Before the revolution, she could in a sense take pride in her isolation. At that time she had worn the scarf as a testament to her faith. Her decision was a voluntary act. When the revolution forced the scarf on others, her actions became meaningless.” (Nafisi 13).By explaining the shift in the meaning of Mahshid wearing a scarf it allows the reader to better relate to her and have sympathy for her situation. Azar did not write this book in chronical order. Instead the book jumps around in time from when she worked at a small university, to a large university, to her private class, and to moving to America, all of this is talked about but not in order of when the memories and situations happened. The way she does this doesn’t confuse the reader because she makes it clear what point in time she is describing within each chapter. This book was engaging the whole way through. Azar holds the reader’s attention by emerging them in the lives and emotional struggles of not only her students but her own life as well. Azar writes about many examples of the Islamic state restricting women’s rights and freedoms, she writes about how this effected students and herself. One student, Vida, is written about expressing her anger when she showed her rage regarding the regime’s new laws “‘The law?’ Vida interrupted him. ‘You guys came in and changed the laws. Is it the law? So was wearing the yellow star in Nazi Germany, should all the Jews have worn the star because it was the blasted law?” (Nafisi 134). By sharing Vida’s outrage with the reader they can become invested in Azar’s students’ lives. While reading this book I learned about what life was like for the people, particularly women, in Iran during the time Azar Nafisi lived there. I now have a better understanding of the restrictions the government put in place and the terrible things people unfairly suffered through. Overall I am very pleased with Reading Lolita in Tehran. I learned about Iran and how their revolution affected the country’s women. I would recommend this book to anyone, primarily to anyone interested in modern history, learning about other cultures, women’s rights, and education.

It was an unlikely place to look for them, but I think I found more kindred spirits in these Iranian women from twenty years ago than I've found in my four years at college. I finally found in print what I've been long grasping for in people: a better definition of womanhood, a verbalization of the fear that comes with being female, and a reminder of the poetry that comes hand-in-hand with our humanity. I have met some of my dearest friends in these pages, and my heart tore a little when I got to the end and realized that their stories were long past and that as much as I may know or love them, they know nothing of me. But I like to think that my knowing them was not in vain. It's as Manna says at the end, as long as I keep them in my eyes, I keep them alive in their truest, most intimate forms. My reading and remembering gives them a voice, and I suppose that's what they wanted.

Review

"Sedaris is the closest thing the literary world has these days to a rock star." -- New York Times"Sedaris's essays are written to be heard, so listen up-he just keeps getting better." -"AudioFile Magazine" on DRESS YOUR FAMILY "I love David Sedaris. I love his weird girlie-man voice and his weirder sense of humor. I love him even though his audio books nearly slay me. In fact, they would come with a warning: 'Remain still while listening. Do not attempt to operate heavy machinery or even use ordinary motor skills'.""-"New York Post "on BARREL FEVER".,."Sedaris has as much fun as is humanly (or elfishly) possible in his behind-the-scenes look at this particularly American tradition of sitting on Santa's lap and asking for stuff...Part of the fun is hearing the reaction of the New Yorkers who have to wait in line, pay for Santa photos, and generally go mad in the Christmas frenzy that Macy's embodies. And Sedaris, never quite who he seems to be, has the nasty tone of his commentary down perfectly."."..Sedaris has as much fun as is humanly (or elfishly) possible in his behind-the-scenes look at this particularly American tradition of sitting on Santa's lap and asking for stuff...Part of the fun is hearing the reaction of the New Yorkers who have to wait in line, pay for Santa photos, and generally go mad in the Christmas frenzy that Macy's embodies. The stories in this book have all been previously published, so if you're a fan of the author, they won't be new to you. I don't usually seek out "humor" books, since many of them seem to take the business of being funny way too seriously. So I've been seeing references to Sedaris for years, but never read any of his stuff. My loss. If these stories are typical, he's both funny and thoughtful, which is a nice combination. The opening story "SantaLand Diaries" is the story that put this author on the map when it was read on NPR. It's the sort of "autobiographical fiction" (i.e. based on his life, but exaggerated for comic effect) that Sedaris does so beautifully. It's a classic.Sedaris admits to some exaggeration, so maybe writing stories about holidays is a natural fit for his talents. Americans take their celebrations very seriously indeed, with the result that observing behavior during holidays is even more entertaining than observing behavior the rest of the time. Holidays bring out the crazy in all of us. Ask any cop or ER nurse or Mall Santa. Even normal people go whack-o.I loved the Christmas letters that spiral out of control. I howled at the critiques of children's holiday productions. Naturally, your own offspring (or grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc) are charming, talented, and delightful, but who the hell thought we'd want to watch those other boring brats? But my favorites were "Dinah the Christmas Whore" and "Let It Snow" because of the glimpses into the strange family that shaped this author's twisted outlook on life. His family may have been "Southern by the Grace of Greyhound" but they fit right in. Anyone who grew up in a dysfunctional family will recognize the characters and situations. Those of you who grew up in a normal family don't know what you missed.I think most of these stories are ones I would enjoy re-reading and the collection is a great introduction to this author's writing. After all, this is a man who's been called "one of the funniest writers alive." By The Economist. And if people who write about the economy don't know great humor when they see, I can't imagine who does.

I like David Sedaris. His off-beat humor matches up with what I think is funny. I don't like it so much when he ventures into fiction, although I have to admit his Six to Eight Black Men and The Cow and the Turkey were spot on. The Monster Mash just didn't click with me, but the SantaLand Diaries was worth the price of the book.Sedaris is meant to be heard, and I can hear his voice reading these short stories as I read them. His unique speaking voice and writing voice are unmistakable. Nobody sound just like David Sedaris. Funny and poignant, both voices combine into a reading experience like none other.

As someone who gets depressed this time of year, and I know I'm not alone in this - this is my antidepressant! How can I be sad at all the signs of Christmas while I'm laughing my butt off with David Sedaris as an elf with me? Best to listen to it read by Sedaris himself, (he reads his work SO well!) but I have heard it so many times that when I read it I can almost hear him speaking in my head. I used to listen to it on the car between Thanksgiving and New Year's, and it really helped. Buy it for the people you know who get sad or just don't like this time of year!!! I do have a complaint with Amazon though - my copy, shipped along with another book, arrived bent! I'll try weighing it down with a stack of heavy books to weigh it down and hopefully straighten it out, but they should have shipped it differently - maybe between 2 sheets of heavy cardboard or something. But I highly recommend the book - one of the funniest I've ever read!!!!

I don't share much of a background with David Sedaris, I'm not from a "middle class" family, I have no college education (IVY LEAGUE even, c'mon), no one in my family has had anything to do with the arts, I'm an only freakin' child, I'm born bred and have always lived in the North West, I don't even have a passport let alone the means to live in any country I please... The list could continue and for some readers things like this make Sedaris' writing out of reach, even insulting. The thing is though we seem to have absolutely nothing in common we do have one thing, tiny as it may be, we the commanality of being human and living during this particular era. That is what connects me to him and his writing, his humble humanity. He knows he isn't a beauty queen, he consistently blunders through life making mistakes, playing the fool even and yet he has this amazing ability to WRITE about it, to share it with thw world and make fun of himself OUT LOUD to millions of readers. I love him for that, I love him for the fact academia hasn't sapped the humanity out of him and made him feel blunder proof or at least made him a blunder snob, hiding behind eight letter words that no one knows the true meaning of, ducking behind an Ivy league education.I picked this particular book up because my best friend is in the hospital, has been, will be, for a while. I have learned that he CANNOT handle being alone so I sit there, hour upon hour and try to read him to sleep. Sedaris' short stories and essays are perfect hospital food right? The problem is reading them aloud for the first time is hard because he makes laugh out loud (and not many do)so in the quiet hospital corridors one room is bellowing with laughter, from me, from my sick friend who really shouldn't be laughing right now, it hurts him, but he won't let me stop. A nurse cruises in inevitably when I am reading something that out of context seems dirty, it becomes even funnier. My context of reading this particular Sedaris book aside it is really a very funny, charming piece of literature that connects with the reader on many levels. The parts that others seem to be offended or put off by, I say read them with zeal, be happy that someone out there is making enough money off being a boob, off proudly being a boob to travel to Japan and France and across the U.S. and is taking the time (for money maybe but whatever) to share his experiences as a pretty much average Joe with us. Be happy to read from someone who relishes in the oddities, who isn't always tring to make you sympathetic and tearful. It really is a rare quality. You will find that most contemporary memoir(ish) literature relies on human empathy and sad, sad, sad, SAD parts of life. It's nice to take a break and read from someone who can tell you abot his mother dying of lung cancer in one paragraph and have you giggling in the next.Comedy or Tragedy, life is what you make of it. Trust me I have my own fair share of the comedically tragic, but when my friends can laugh at the crazy things I say and do when I am hallucinating because Lupus is attacking my brain I am way better than when they are crying over it.David Sedaris has the ability to make you laugh over things that put another way might make you cry. AND he has inspired me to REALLY quit smoking, I am done with cigarettes.
