This was a wonderful book that I absolutely couldn't put down. I live in Pittsburgh and have been to all of the sites discussed in the book but, more importantly, the author wrote a seamless story intertwining history and fiction to tell the story of a fascinating man who gave so much to the world. I am now inspired to read even more about Andrew Carnegie and the history of steel making in our country and in Pittsburgh specifically.I am an avid reader of historical fiction and believe that I have learned a great deal from reading books like Carnegie's Maid and highly recommend it to others who like a little fiction mixed into well researched history.

Perhaps a very Pittsburgh book, too -- right down to foregoing love in favor of duty, and love transmuting into ideals.When I was a child in Pittsburgh, the main Carnegie Library was a temple to learning -- no expense spared in its majestic construction and every book cherished, no matter how obscure. I used to make the series of trolley journeys from my suburban home to the university district to visit it every other weekend, just because it amazed me that I was welcome in such a palatial and scholarly environment -- everyone was. It was its sheer magnificence that began my fasciation with Andrew Carnegie. I also adored Pittsburgh -- a very complex place, for those of you who don't know it.So of course I wanted to read this book, and that side of me was gratified to come away with a better understanding of the young Carnegie and Pittsburgh in the time of the Civil War -- with an intriguing description of New York in the same time period thrown in.This book is not a literary masterpiece, but it is competently written from the POV of a ladies' maid -- a narrow view of the world, but one which serves the purposes of the book very nicely. The characters took on reality for me, and the small domestic view of some of the great robber-baron moves of the day, and of the building of the country's infrastructure, was engrossing. So was the description of the living conditions of laboring-class immigrants and Irish tenant farmers during the time of the great potato famine, which came to vivid life. And the story arc was quite satisfying -- and the farthest thing imaginable from predictable. I'll be re-reading this book in future.

The whole book seems contrived to show that a (fictional) young woman made Carnegie a great philanthropist, although he'd already decided to be one at a young age. It's also a bit boring.I realize that being a servant in the 19th century was miserable work, but how many times must we read that Clara brushes Mrs. Carnegie's hair 200 strokes at night and rubs in rosewater lotion and buffs her nails? Darns her silk stockings? A servant's work was certainly repetitious, but the writing doesn't need to be. I felt as though the author just copy-pasted those passages in as filler.Similarly, all the details that Clara instantly grasped about the insider trading and M&A activity among robber barons was too technical for my entertainment. One of Clara's big victories in the books is when she suggests to Carnegie that he sue for patent violation. A modern female lawyer (such as the author) might think of that. There's no way a simple Irish girl would have heard of it - I don't care how many poetry books her father somehow found for her to read. That's the lawyer talking, not the Irish maid.I did leave wanting to read a good, non-fictional bio of Carnegie. His life story must be fascinating. Why did he live with his mother until his 50s and only marry after her death? Very Freudian!P.S. For Downton Abbey fans (every review seems to mention DA), please remember that DA begins when the Titanic sinks in 1912. Carnegie was already elderly when the Titanic sank. This is about a very different era.

Too much romance for my taste, but the historical portion was pretty good!! I couldn’t put it down. Without all the romance, I would’ve given it a 5 star. Andrew Carnegie was a complex individual with his business acumen, philanthropy, and (very interestingly) his late in life marriage to a very young bride. The description of Pittsburg was quite fascinating.

This is a nice story about how Andrew Carnegie changed from a “cut throat” businessman building his fortune, to one of the greatest philanthropists in history. It’s an interesting story that moves quickly. I enjoyed it.

the main problems i have with this book are that the title is extremely misleading - it should be more like "a short catalog of glass items in our museum and some very scholarly attempts to get another publication," or something very similar. it's nothing, and i mean nothing, like a history of glass - not even an artistic history of glass. it was prepared by numerous authors and it appears that the editor didn't give sufficient direction, since the text is pretty disjointed. also, the language is very erudite and, to be entirely honest, duller than dirt. i'm pretty sure that all of the authors are scholarly people, who have published peer-reviewed articles in their respective trade journals, and who saw this book as an opportunity to add one more publication to their bibliographies. unfortunately, this is not the same as writing for the general public.the photographs are good. however, the photographer(s) is/are not specifically mentioned, even though there's a page and a half of credits.

I bought this for my Uncle as a Christmas present after a visit to Corning Museum of Glass this past summer. he wanted a book that detailed the history of glass. This was a homerun- he loved it!!!! Only recommendations to the publisher- add a glossery and index for reference.

Great tree guide -- our family loves the beautiful color photos of tree leaves and the descriptions are brief, accurate, and interesting. It is bound like a stack of paint chips a designer might carry around -- with one post at the bottom so that each page fans out. The only annoying thing about this is that the top edge of each page is literally shaped like the leaf it features, which means that the tops of the pages can get caught on each other when you try to fan it back in. In our family, this is a small issue that we are happy to live with. We take it with us on hikes and camping trips and use it to identify trees (and all the leaves our daughter loves to collect whenever we are outside). If you are looking for a convenient North American tree identification guide that is well-designed, in color, and easy to travel with, this is the one!

My kids and I really like this booklet. We take it on walks to identify trees in the neighborhood. We try to memorize all the trees we've ID'd and then test ourselves without consulting the book. Then we get pissed cuz we screwed up and we walk to a tree that we can positively identify- either a maple or a dogwood. Always- it's either a maple or a dogwood (cuz they're easy). But hey, we be tryin'. And that's way better than watching rich kids play with toys on YouTube 🙄

I think this is a great starter ID guide and there is a lot to learn. I like the way the information is laid out, that they show the leaf, fruit and bark. The reason it gets a lower rating is that the die cut leaves are way too fragile for every day or traveling use. We have been keeping in the box it comes in but it is a hassle that it is not more durable. I like to throw my guides and binoculars in my backpack and go, and this doesn't hold up.

Great field guide, my kids had these when they were little. Now they are grown up and wanted to know how to takecare of their trees in Texas. Cool product!!

I would use this "guide" more if I could ever find what i'm looking for, but they are organised alphabetically and not by type or shape. Although the cards provide great information it is difficult to find what tree you're looking at with these. They could be unscrewed and used differently, and there is an index. Kids think they're fun because of the leaf shapes and design, but they quickly get frustrated flipping through them. it's also hard to close because of the various leaf shapes. Overall it doesn't get used much because more often than not it doesn't have what i'm looking for, or enough trees to be worth using as an identification tool. If you want to teach kids basic trees this could be good, but I would start with what's in the yard, and only half of those are in this book.

This set is awesome. Much easier to identify leaves than from a book. Great gift for any age.

Fandex really draw people in, which is what we were looking for. This tree one is great for comparing leaves.

I've used these before and these are just as nice as the ones I had before. Easy to use by a wide range of ages. Informative, colorful.Highly recommend.

Rabbi Yosef Adler offers readers the Passover Haggadah together with comments that he heard from Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik. These comments are a collection of short sermons on various parts of the Haggadah, a book recited during the evening Passover Seder, a book that contains readings recalling the enslavement of the Israelites in Egypt and their exodus under the leadership of Moses. The word Seder means "order," referring to the order of the readings and of the many practices that are part of the Seder meal, such as eating matzot (unleavened bread), moror (bitter herbs), and stimulating children to participate by encouraging them to ask questions. Rabbi Soloveitchik very frequently refers in his comments to statements made in the legal rulings of the great sage Maimonides (1138-1204).The comments include: We need to not only perform the Seder practices but also understand them; we must "learn, study, and analyze the events surrounding the slavery and exodus from Egypt." One lesson that the Seder teaches is to appreciate time and use it well. There is a difference between slaves owned by individuals, such as the biblical Joseph and his owner, and slaves owned by a State, such as Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and the Egyptian slavery. God is called "Makom," Place, according to Rabbi Soloveitchik because the word suggests a hidden God. There is significance in why tradition states that the Israelites were redeemed from Egyptian slavery after 210 years of enslavement rather than 209 or another number.Rabbi Adler includes laws about the holiday in Hebrew and concludes his Haggadah with seven pages of his own ideas about the Haggadah in English.
