Eurasia Group founder Ian Bremmer, Deutsche Bank Chief U.S. Economist Joe LaVorgna, and Citigroup Vice Chairman Peter Orszag were among those giving it a thumbs-up.”—Bloomberg Business“The material in Superforecasting is new, and includes a compendium of best practices for prediction… The accuracy that ordinary people regularly attained through their meticulous application did amaze me… [It offers] us all an opportunity to understand and react more intelligently to the confusing world around us.”—New York Times Book Review"Tetlock's thesis is that politics and human affairs are not inscrutable mysteries. Instead, they are a bit like weather forecasting, where short-term predictions are possible and reasonably accurate... The techniques and habits of mind set out in this book are a gift to anyone who has to think about what the future might bring. In other words, to everyone."—The Economist"Tetlock’s work is fascinating and important, and he and Gardner have written it up here with verve."—The Financial Times“Superforecasting is the most important scientific study I’ve ever read on prediction.” —Cass R. Sunstein, The Bloomberg View"Just as modern medicine began when a farsighted few began to collect data and keep track of outcomes, to trust objective 'scoring' over their own intuitions, it's time now for similar demands to be made of the experts who lead public opinion. It's time for evidence-based forecasting."—The Washington Post"Superforecasting, by Philip Tetlock and Dan Gardner, is one of the most interesting business and finance books published in 2015.” —John Kay, The Financial Times"One of Tetlock's key points is that these aren't innate skills: they can be both taught and learned... Tetlock's 'Ten Commandments For Aspiring Superforecasters' should probably have a place of honor in most business meeting rooms."—Forbes"The key to becoming a better forecaster, if not a super one, according to Tetlock is the same as any other endeavor: practice, practice, practice."—The Street"In this captivating book, Tetlock argues that success is all about the approach: foresight is not a gift but rather a product of a particular way of thinking... In each chapter, the author augments his research with compelling interviews, anecdotes, and historical context, using accessible real-world examples to frame what could otherwise be dense subject matter. His writing is so engaging and his argument so tantalizing, readers will quickly be drawn into the challenge - in the appendix, the author provides a concise training manual to do just that. A must-read field guide for the intellectually curious."—Kirkus Reviews, starred"Tetlock and Gardner believe anyone can improve their forecasting ability by learning from the way they work. If that's true, people in business and finance who make an effort to do so have a lot to gain — and those who don't, much to lose."—The Financial Post"Superforecasting is a very good book. In fact it is essential reading — which I have never said in any of my previous MT reviews... It should be on every manager's and investor's reading list around the topics du jour of decision-making, prediction and behavioural economics."—Management Today"I've been hard on social science, even suggesting that 'social science' is an oxymoron. I noted, however, that social science has enormous potential, especially when it combines 'rigorous empiricism with a resistance to absolute answers.' The work of Philip Tetlock possesses these qualities."—Scientific American"One of the best books I've read this year... Superforecasting is a must read book."—Seeking Alpha"Keen to show that not all forecasting is a flop, Tetlock has conducted a new experiment that shows how you can make good forecasts, ones that routinely improve on predictions made by even the most well-informed expert. The book is full of excellent advice — it is the best thing I have read on predictions, which is a subject I am keen on... Gardner has turned the research into readable examples and a flowing text, without losing rigour... This book shows that you can be better at forecasting."—The Times of London"We now expect every medicine to be tested before it is used. We ought to expect that everybody who aspires to high office is trained to understand why they are so likely to make mistakes forecasting complex events... Politics is harder than physics but Tetlock has shown that it doesn't have to be like astrology."—The Spectator“Philip Tetlock is the world expert on a vital subject. Superforecasting is the wonderful story of how he and his research team got ordinary people to beat experts in a very serious game. It is also a manual for thinking clearly in an uncertain world. Read it.”  —Daniel Kahneman, winner of the Nobel Prize and author of Thinking, Fast and Slow“Superforecasting is a rare book that will make you smarter and wiser. One of the giants of behavioral science reveals how to improve at predicting the future.”—Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Originals    “The best way to know if an idea is right is to see if it predicts the future. But which ideas, which methods, which people have a track record of non-obvious predictions vindicated by the course of events? The answers will surprise you, and they have radical implications for politics, policy, journalism, education, and even epistemology—how we can best gain knowledge about the world. The casual style of Superforecasting belies the profundity of its message.” —Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of The Better Angels of Our Nature“Philip Tetlock’s Superforecasting is a common-sense guide to thinking about decision-making and the future by a man who knows this terrain like no one else.”—Ian Bremmer, Bloomberg Business’ Best Books of 2015 “In this accessible and lively book, Tetlock and Gardner recognize the centrality of probabilistic thinking to sound forecasting. Whether you are a policymaker or anyone else who wants to approach decisions with great rigor, Superforecasting will serve as a highly useful guide.” —Robert E. Rubin, Former U.S. Treasury Secretary   “How well can we predict the future, really? There is no better way to answer that question than to read this book. You will come away disillusioned about the ability of experts, but also enlightened about how the best forecasters do it—and maybe even hopeful about your own prospects.” —Tyler Cowen, Director of the George Mason University Mercatus Center and author of Average Is Over   “For thousands of years, people have listened to those who foretold the future with confidence and little accountability. In this book, Tetlock and Gardner free us from our foolishness. Full of great stories and simple statistics, Superforecasting gives us a new way of thinking about the complexity of the world, the limitations of our minds, and why some people can consistently outpredict a dart-throwing chimp. Tetlock’s research has the potential to revolutionize foreign policy, economic policy, and your own day-to-day decisions.” —Jonathan Haidt, New York University Stern School of Business, and author of The Righteous Mind  “[Superforecasting] shows that you can get information from a lot of different sources. Knowledge is all around us and it doesn’t have to come from the experts.”—Joe LaVorgna, Bloomberg Business’ Best Books of 2015   “Good judgment and good forecasting are rare, but they turn out to be made of teachable skills. By forcing forecasters to compete, Tetlock discovered what the skills are and how they work, and this book teaches the ability to any interested reader.” —Stewart Brand, President, The Long Now Foundation   “Philip Tetlock is renowned for demonstrating that most experts are no better than ‘dart-throwing monkeys’ at predicting elections, wars, economic collapses and other events. In his brilliant new book, Tetlock offers a much more hopeful message, based once again on his own ground-breaking research. He shows that certain people can forecast events with accuracy much better than chance—and so, perhaps, can the rest of us, if we emulate the critical thinking of these ‘superforecasters.’ The self-empowerment genre doesn’t get any smarter and more sophisticated than this.” —John Horgan, Director, Center for Science Writings, Stevens Institute of Technology   “Superforecasting is the rare book that is both scholarly and engaging. The lessons are scientific, compelling, and enormously practical. Anyone who is in the forecasting business—and that’s all of us—should drop what they are doing and read it.” —Michael J. Mauboussin, Head of Global Financial Strategies, Credit Suisse“[Superforecasting] highlights the techniques and attributes of superforecasters—that is, those whose predictions have been demonstrated to be remarkably accurate—in a manner that’s both rigorous and readable. The lessons are directly relevant to business, finance, government, and politics.”—Peter Orszag, Bloomberg Business’ Best Books of 2015   “There isn’t a social scientist in the world I admire more than Phil Tetlock.” —Tim Harford, author of The Undercover Economist   “From the Oracle of Delphi to medieval astrologers to modern overconfident experts, forecasters have been either deluded or fraudulent. For the first time, Superforecasting reveals the secret of making honest, reliable, effective, useful judgments about the future.” —Aaron Brown, Chief Risk Officer of AQR Capital Management and author of The Poker Face of Wall Street   “Socrates had the insight in ‘know thyself,’ Kahneman delivered the science in Thinking, Fast and Slow, and now Tetlock has something we can all apply in Superforecasting.” —Juan Luis Perez, Global Head of UBS Group Research

Super Forecasting: The Art and Science of Prediction by Philip E. Tetlock and Dan Gardner is a rather timely book about polls, statistics, politics, news, media, and more. This book delves into how the pollsters and surveys make their predictions and how they disseminate their findings to the public. The 2016 presidential election is one in which the pollsters seem to have royally screwed up. It seems that no major survey or poll predicted the outcome that occurred. This book sheds some insight into how so many seemingly scientific polls could have been wrong all at the same time. This book is written in a way that anybody can understand, no Master's degree in statistics or math needed. It was well-written and explains that forecasters are fallible too. This book also provides guidance on how statisticians and forecasters can get better results. This sort of 10 step program (there are 11 steps) can be applied to other issues in life as well. This book is also extensively annotated, with references at the end for those looking for more technical details.I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

There are two kind of pop-science books; one deep and thoughtful based on years of research, one quick and dirty written by a ghost-writer. This book is of the latter kind. Tetlock wrote Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know? about a decade ago. That book was deep and thoughtful. I had expected his new book to be an update with ten more years of research and consulting. Sadly, I am greatly disappointed. The book could have been written totally without additional research input. It starts with a couple of chapters of the history of the standard controlled experiment. There is about 50 pages of real content in the 330 pages of the book. There is a lot of content directly lifted from the web (e.g. Fermi-forecasting, Auftragstaktik) - kind of Malcolm Gladwell style, some insight and some misinterpretation. The style is **extreme pop-science**. What do I mean with that? Far too many pages, plentiful descriptions of minute irrelevant details of individuals (so called human interest points - I guess that is what they teach in creative writing), never any figure or number (e.g. 67% is changed to two thirds), all difficult material removed or put in a footnote. And how come a book with two authors use the pronoun "I" all the time? The researcher has run a forecasting tournament for several years. He has loads of data, but he does not provide any analysis in the book. He refers to his research in footnotes, but no explanation or description at all. Instead we get statements like 80% of superforecasters are more intelligent than average. What is wrong with running a regression to find out what characteristics are important? Why spend five chapters going through the characteristics of superforecasters? In the end, apparently, two characteristics stand out. (1) Continual updating of forecasts, (2) Being intelligent. That fact is told after around 200 pages of tedious writing. Wtf? I can reluctantly accept dumbing down the book, but it is inexcusable that the footnotes does not include some further help to the reader that wants more depth. The author likes to give minute details of the superforcasters. Personally, I don't care that Brian likes Facebook updates of cats, that John is retired because he is sick and that he now likes to collect stuff or that Steve is and old colleague of the author that likes opera. Who reads and enjoy this written muzak? It goes on chapter after chapter. We "meet" 15-20 superforecasters. There is a lot about the superforecasters in the book, but the title of the book is "Superforecasting". This is a seriously misleading title. It makes you believe that you will learn tools to become a great forecaster. You get some, mostly general, points in an eight page appendix. With the researcher's experience, I would have expected a lot of practical advice. What is good about the book?(1) The key message that experts are lousy forecasters and do not want accountability is very important, but that was already in the author's earlier book.(2) Some useful anecdotes that you probably should pick up if you are teaching/presenting on the topic.(3) Odd bits of information. I liked the discussion of how the German military used what we consider modern management already 100 years ago. As mentioned earlier, there are 50 pages of really good material in the book.I bought the hard-cover edition. If you make notes with a normal pencil, be careful because it easily pierces the paper. The book is worth two stars. If you are en educator and want a few anecdotes, read the book. Others should give it a pass. Instead sign up to the author's forecasting tournament. You learn more by trial and error learning. I signed up two years ago and it is a useful experience. You can also check the video features on edge.org. Then spend time reading better books. A few rigorous pop-science books:* Another forecasting perspective is Steenbarger's Trading Psychology 2.0: From Best Practices to Best Processes (Wiley Trading). It is about trading in the market, but it covers many of the topics from a different perspective. Worth reading his earlier books too.* And if you haven't read Thinking, Fast and Slow, that is a more important book (but also too fluffy for my linking).* You should also read Taleb's The Black Swan: Second Edition: The Impact of the Highly Improbable: With a new section: "On Robustness and Fragility" (Incerto), but don't buy his fluffy version of the same topic Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets (Incerto)

The book offers insights into one of the most important aspects of professional performance, being able to predict the outcome of future events - which is of course impossible in most cases. The book does, however, come with very valuable insights - and unless you are familiar with these already - could make you a better forecaster. The key points I found from this book is to force yourselves to explicitly state your forecast, preferably in numerical probability, so that you can easily judge and learn from them when the facts are given. Keep an open mind (ridiculously obvious?). Separate known statistical content from case specific guess work - ie what is general in a case and what needs specific analysis?Although the information provided might be very useful, and I do not regret the read - I think the text is far too verbose and much of the content either repetitive or not very interesting. I kept thinking about Nassim Nicholas Taleb's entertaining books on randomness when reading, until his name appeared in an endless chapter on the critics of the author's work. If you haven't read Taleb's books, read them first - and save this one to your retirement days.

I (Matt) have really enjoyed reading Super Forcasting: The Art and Science of Prediction by Phillip E. Tetlock and Dan Gardner. It's a fun book for taking a dive into forecasting .I enjoyed reading about how forecasters related to weather, politics, stocks, etc. are often considered professionals even though they may actually be amateurs. I also liked learning about how even though these people are often very bad or unreliable at forecasting, it is in many ways a skill that can be learned. While it definitely leans more towards pop-science than going academically deep into the presented topic, I feel like I learned some new information from this book.I do wish there was less fluff and I often found myself wishing for deeper analysis of the years of research the authors kept referencing. If you enjoy books like Moneyball or Freakonomics then I would recommend this book to you.**I received this book from Blogging for Books for free.**

Amazon.com Review

Oprah Book Club® Selection, February 1999: Originally published in Switzerland, and gracefully translated into English by Carol Brown Janeway, The Reader is a brief tale about sex, love, reading, and shame in postwar Germany. Michael Berg is 15 when he begins a long, obsessive affair with Hanna, an enigmatic older woman. He never learns very much about her, and when she disappears one day, he expects never to see her again. But, to his horror, he does. Hanna is a defendant in a trial related to Germany's Nazi past, and it soon becomes clear that she is guilty of an unspeakable crime. As Michael follows the trial, he struggles with an overwhelming question: What should his generation do with its knowledge of the Holocaust? "We should not believe we can comprehend the incomprehensible, we may not compare the incomparable.... Should we only fall silent in revulsion, shame, and guilt? To what purpose?" The Reader, which won the Boston Book Review's Fisk Fiction Prize, wrestles with many more demons in its few, remarkably lucid pages. What does it mean to love those people--parents, grandparents, even lovers--who committed the worst atrocities the world has ever known? And is any atonement possible through literature? Schlink's prose is clean and pared down, stripped of unnecessary imagery, dialogue, and excess in any form. What remains is an austerely beautiful narrative of the attempt to breach the gap between Germany's pre- and postwar generations, between the guilty and the innocent, and between words and silence. --R. Ellis

This is definitely one of those books that haunts the memory. It stays with you days after you read it. It's philosophical in tone.I think Hanna was a victim of circumstances & that Michael was to harsh in his judgement of her.At the beginning of the book she shows great compassion as she helps a vomiting Michael & walks him back home. When it is later revealed that she picked the weaker children to read to her before they were put to death, I think she was trapped by the horrible circumstances & reality of the Nazi regime, & that making their lives a little more livable before their untimely deaths was the only thing she had in her power to do to show compassion. There is also a lot of symbolism in the book. For example: Hanna is illiterate at a time when Germany's average citizen had a Bachelor's degree. As for her anger toward a young Michael Berg during their vacation, I think this was do to a feeling of helplessness. Put yourself in her shoes for a moment & imagine not being able to read at all. You are 100% reliant on your lover to read the signs to get were your going & thus to get back from whence you came. You can't even order from a menu. You wake up miles from home & that lover you are reliant on to read signs & order food has vanished & left you a piece a paper with writing on it, & you can't read it. You must feel stranded & hopeless. Thus when the young Mr. Berg returns he is surprised by an understandably irate Frau Schmidt. She is innocent to an extent, & her more guilty ex-coworkers get much more lenient sentences by contrast.Where does guilt begin or innocence win? I think that is an unanswerable question, & one for the history of not only Hanna, but all of mankind throughout all of history.

If the purpose of this book is to make the reader think about guilt and conscience, it succeeds. But it's so much more complex than that. If you loves someone who is guilty of something horrible, does that make you also guilty? Does guilt for smaller things equate to or trump guilt for more horrible things? How do we look on our past or the past of our parents' generation? Where in lies absolution, if it exists? This book is moving, romantic, sad, upsetting, and ... poignant. All of which seem unimportant, really, but this is one of those books that ought to be read, including by you. It's not just about 'Vergangenheitsbewältigung," really, but about our care and lack of care for other human beings. Which, really, is the crux of life, no?In another way, this is a book about books, not in a primary way, but in a secondary way that is quite beautiful, even if it isn't the point. The author says,"The tectonic layers of our lives rest so tightly one on top of the other that we always come up against earlier events in later ones, not as matter that has been fully formed and pushed aside, but absolutely present and alive.” It couldn't be more true.

This is one of those books I truly enjoyed reading. It has become one of my favorite books. I love the writing style. Michael (the main character) takes you on a journey with his story. I felt every emotion, every frustration and his anger towards society. Michael was a brilliant man whose only weakness was a woman 19 years his senior. Michael is very young, 15, when he starts to have a relationship with Hanna. I understand a lot of people considered Hanna to be a pedophile. If the role was reversed and Michael was a young girl and Hanna was an older man, the man would have been considered a sexual predator. But, reading through the book, you don't get that from Hanna. I felt Michael's love for her surpassed any obstacle that tried to keep them apart. I assumed if Hanna did not die, Michael would have still loved her and given her the world. Age did not matter in this book. Reading through Michael's view point, you as the reader did not care that there is a huge gap in age. You wanted Michael to find peace and he would never find peace if Hanna was not in his life. Hanna was Michael's everything and he couldn't understand why; maybe it’s because Hanna kept Michael alive. Michael had something to live for. He was constantly sick. I think Michael was much stronger then Hanna. She was weak and she did not know how to open up. My heart broke when Michael entered Hanna's cell and found a picture of him graduating and he couldn't breathe, all he wanted to do was cry."As she spoke, I had continued to kneel, my eyes on the pictures and notes, fighting back tears".I got the same emotions when (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollow) Professor Snape found one of Lillian's (Harry Potter's mom) letter and her handwriting and Professor Snape broke down in the room and started weeping. At that moment you felt the unconditional love Professor Snape had for Lillian. What kept Professor Snape alive was Lillian) what kept Michael going throughout his life were Hanna and her memories. Michael had unconditional love for Hanna and I think she knew that; she did not want to burden him with her illiteracy.“She learned to read with you. She borrowed the books you read on tape out of the library, and followed what she heard, word by word and sentence by sentence.I fell in love with this book from beginning to the end.

I purchased this Kindle book in January 2017. THE READER isn’t the type of book that I normally read so it sat unread until I noticed that it was the oldest unread book in my Kindle library. Last week, I decided to read it.I had forgotten what THE READER was about. When I started reading it, I thought I had gotten a new version of SUMMER OF ’42 by Herman Raucher with its forbidden love. I wasn’t too impress. I almost thought about giving up on the book. After reading about 1/3 of the book, it changed to something totally unexpected - The Holocaust, German guilty and atonement, war crimes tribunal, war crimes defenses (“I was just following orders”), illiteracy, etc. The last half of the book had me totally engrossed and mesmerized. The ending was a tear jerker for me. This is one of my TOP 100 books; and one that I will probably re-read.

I'm old enough to have learned my fishing tactics from Ray Bergman's "Trout", and to have read "Matching The Hatch" in its first printing, Mind you, I will not be throwing out Flick, Marinaro, Caucci/Nastasi, or Swisher/Richards, but I will now be turning to The Bug Book most of the time, because it is that thorough, that concise, and that good.

A well written book with terrific photography, I'd recommend it for anyone starting out with fly fishing and tying. Terrific explanations of the terms, and reasonably complete coverage from West to East, that applies not only in the US, but much of Canada as well.

There is no getting around it. If you are a fly fisher and/or tier at any level of expertise you need this book.Paul Weamer does an outstanding job of organizing this book into easy to digest segments and covers everything from the different types of waters to the stages of key insects in our beloved trout’s diet.He also nails the explanations perfectly without getting dry, boring or overly detailed. Buy this book, you need it.

Amazing book. Good explanation of bug hatches and detailed information for understanding the mayflies, caddis flies, stoneflies and more. Highly recommended for every fisherman.

This book is so general that I found rather unhelpful. I would only recommend this for someone who has zero knowledge of fly fishing that needs an introduction to the terminology. I would contest that for someone who has a year or more of fly fishing under their belt that this book likely has very little that you aren't already familiar with.

Well made, Good book on a subject where things can get quite technical fast. Great photography, clearly depicting what a fisherman needs to be both informed and using the right thing at the right time.

Although I’ve been fly fishing for a while I still found this book was helpful. Filled in some of the gaps in my knowledge. Great photos. Well written clear prose style.

Fantastic book and very well written and packed with loads of information.Well worth the cost (minimal) and a must read for all us dedicated fly-fishers from coast to coast.

This book is a very easy to use reference book. It should be called Quick and Easy Lookup Medical Transcription Guide: Do's and Don'ts. It is just an amazing book. I purchased this on Amazon not expecting too much because I have the 3rd edition of AAMT Book of Style and also the Workbook which are both excellent, but for a few cents (yes cents), I decided to try this. However, to my surprise it follows the same standards as the AAMT Book of Style, and it even has quite a few samples of medical documents. It is a very good reference book and you can find anything you want in the blink of an eye. This will be added to my library of MT books and will be used as much as the others.Let us not forget the Do's and Don'ts because this is a great aspect of the book. Just think of a MT question and the answer is before you. I know I am reapeating myself but I embrace anything that will make my life easier and this is one of them.

I wish this was out text book for my class. So full of much needed information and small enough to take to work. A wonderful guide even though it's a little older. I highly recommend this book.

This is like a bible for the medical transcriber. When you do diversified work in the medical field sometimes you forget the format to use and this book gives that to you in easy reference form. There are so many other things this book offers in a concise way. It comes highly recommended.

This book is awesome for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, it's very comprehensive--containing grammar, spelling, medical transcription-specific info, frequently misused words & sound-alikes, lab values, and much more. This is my bible, even though it hasn't been updated for a while and is definitely due. I can't wait for the new version to come out!The spiral-bound version is a real bonus because it's so much easier to use and not lose your place.

The book condition really met my expectation which I'm very surprise especially for a cheap price. You have my trust.

I used this book in my medical transcription class in college. We used it alot this semester and i learned things that i didnt know before. the book itself was in good condition.

Do NOT purchase anything for Medical Transcription!! Please!! This is an almost defunct career choice. As a 37+ year veteran in this field, almost every job has been absorbed by the new computer policies of the Obamacare regime. Almost every transcription job has been cut. There are no jobs, so it's not wise to invest in any tools to do this job. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on anything related to this field. It is just about impossible to get a job and there are people with YEARS of experience all over the country who are out of work. I know of one facility that went from 40 transcriptions, down to 3, and that is just one facility!!

I am a new MT and have found this book very helpful. The table of contents (listed alphabetically - nice) is on the back cover that folds over, which I have found easy to use. I LOVE that it is spiral bound, as it only takes up half as much space on my desk. It also includes appendices for items such as problem words, genus and species names, commonly used abbreviations, etc.

Home and shipboard cooking using the freshest ingredients from port to port. Reading this cookbook is an adventure into the lives of the ships Captain and the Chef on the Hudson River. Beautiful photos artfully taken with a history of sailing on the Hudson and the East Coast.

Several years ago a friend and I sailed on the J & E Riggan, one of the Maine schooners, owned by Capts Anne Mahle and John Finger. She was the chef, the food was superb, all cooked on a wood stove on the schooner. This cookbook is full of her recipes. I've tried several of them and they are just as good as I remember. The cookbook also has stories and history of the schooner. A great cookbook. Even better, take a schooner cruise on the Riggan along the coast of Maine, it will be a favorite trip.

This is a great book. Food tastes great. Had a chance to taste some of it on the windjammer cruise they have.

One of my cooking bibles. The recipes are straightforward and delicious, especially Annie's "Cheesy Potatoes"! I'm a sailor, too, and my hat is off to her to make such great food aboard their schooner.

great Maine recipes! Most are fairly easy to bring together and fun to make ! Unfornunately , Price of lobster is sky high at the present time

This was a happy surprise in my Christmas stocking this year, after my mother ran into the author at Barnes and Noble. I'm so glad she snagged me a copy, since I'm not quite sure what I'd do without this cookbook in my home. This is one of those cookbooks that you don't know if you should put in your kitchen with the rest of the cookbooks, or out on the coffee table so that everybody can enjoy it. This book features wonderfully sophisticated home-cooking style recipes, breathtaking photos from the J&E Riggin, the Maine Windjammer that's currently cared for by the author and her husband, and oodles of stories about the Windjammer, their voyages, their history, and the ideas behind these recipes. This cookbook has the feel of a family journal or photo album, which is really a great feeling that is lost with a lot of cookbooks. So often these days when you buy a cookbook, it feels like the recipes featured in it are made once or twice in a test kitchen before getting a rubber-stamped approval to be shown in their mass-produced cookbook. But you don't feel that with this book. You know that these recipes were made dozens, maybe hundreds of times to hundreds of hungry people before being collected and featured in a cookbook that feels like should be a personal family cookbook, not something you can just pick up at a bookstore. I love that feel. There are a ton of recipes in this book, not different versions of the same ol' meals that you can find in any cookbook. Unique recipes, ones that I've never seen on paper other than from my mother's handwritten recipe cards. Recipes like German Apple Pancakes, Roasted Mushrooms and Artichoke Sauce, Nectarine-Blueberry Bread, Ginger Shortbread, Black Bottom Banana Cream Pie, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Pork Pot Pie, Lemon Lobster with Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Wassail Bowl Punch... I could go on and on. Amazing. And this recipe book is a "from scratch" book, which I think is such a blessing, because there is nothing more frustrating than buying a cookbook with 100 different ways to prepare a can of "cream of chicken" soup and a can of refrigerator biscuits. This is a cookbook for cooks, and those of us who wish we were. We need more cookbooks out there like this. There is next to nothing wrong with this cookbook. The only observations I have made is that sometimes I need a little more description on the making of a recipe (for example, a notation the dough will be runny, lumpy, etc) as there have been a recipes that I made where the consistency or appearance wasn't quite what I expected. Also, it is obvious that some of these recipes were reduced from a recipe that made more servings for more people, so some of the seasonings and ingredients have to be tweaked for a more intimate setting. No big deal, just something to keep in mind.I love this cookbook. My favorite recipes thus far include the German Apple Pancakes, Pork Pot Pie, Rita's Double Toffee Delight, and the Wassail Punch. Even as we speak I have a batch of Double Toffee Delights filling my house with its delicious aroma. Every time I use this book, I remember Maine vacations, fine meals, happy memories... It's the best investment in a book I think anybody could make. This cookbook is a must-have for anybody. I can't say enough wonderful things about it.

I am one of those gen-x cooks who can make the basics for dinner and dessert. But, ever since I started using this cookbook, I have not only been preparing good wholesome dishes for my daughter and I, but have found myself trying new things. I am not known as the cook in my family, but having tried out a few recipes at family get-togethers, my family now wonders what I will be making next (and did she really make that?).I can follow a recipe as long as it is easy to make, and with this book it's not only easy, it's fun. I love reading the overall story of Anne, her husband Jon and children, Chloe and Ella. It adds a very personal touch to something that I used to think of as "a book of food to make".Not only are the recipes great, the photos in this book are so fantastic-giving you a real sense of being in Maine on a windjammer. It truly makes me want to go sailing again. I especially enjoyed the section called 'A Week at Sea'. How much better could life get-spending a whole week relaxing with the wind in your hair, taking part of hundred year old traditions, and eating some of the most delectable food you have ever tasted?! I don't think it can. Having sailed on the J&E Riggin myself, I can say with absoluteness that the mouth-watering cuisine that folks can have onboard, they can also have at home with this book.Anyone that either buys a copy or receives one as a gift will from that point on consider this their favorite cookbook- I sure know I do!

I was really glad to receive this cookbook as a gift as I have found it great fun to use. I think the layout of the cookbook was very well done as well as the color of the pages. . not something you see very often in a cookbook. The pictures are really beautiful and catch the feeling of the sea. I enjoy the margin notes in each section as well as, for example, in the Meat Section, Anne's description of the dinner menus she serves on board or under Yeast Breads her suggestions on proofing, flour vs water, etc. I found these very helpful. My one suggestion would be that if you weren't familiar with yeast breads, you wouldn't know how hot the "warm water" should be. Possibly if a temp. was added indicating that the "warm water" should be 105/110 it might be helpful. Also, after you make muffins some indication on whether they should be left in the pan or taken out. I loved the Blueberry Lemon Bread and so did some of my friends and especially Dana's Maple-Dill Dressing . .yum-o! I like to be able to make quick and good meals and this tops my list.

“Brilliantly written… Sweetbitter is the Kitchen Confidential of our time.”—Gabrielle Hamilton, author of Blood, Bones & Butter and Prune, New York Times Book Review“Danler’s sexy, astute debut is really a love story about the addictive pull of restaurant life… Anyone who’s ever tied on an apron will think, “Finally, someone wrote a book about us.” And nailed it.”—People (book of the week)“An unpretentious, truth-dealing novel… about hunger of every variety. Ms. Danler is a sensitive observer… and gifted commenter on many things. Sweetbitter is going to make a lot of people hungry.”—Dwight Garner, New York Times “… perfectly captures the raw possibility of a young woman’s first year in New York, opening up to a whole new world of wine, food, love and heartbreak.”—Mackenzie Dawson, New York Post     "...a raw, shucked, pungent, wild love story."—Marie Claire "Danler... quickly draws you into the sparkling surfaces and the shadowy underbelly of the city... [Tess's] insatiable hunger for tactile, sensual satisfaction dares you to tag along. The journey is high-minded and dirty, beastly and bountiful."—Elle “Danler’s ravishing debut is like inhabiting the heady after-midnight hours of a city drunk on its own charms… [her] descriptions of food and drink go beyond mouth-watering, verging on orgasmic… a first novel [that] tantalizes, seduces, satisfies.”—Leigh Haber, O Magazine

I loved this book, really loved it, but it isn't for everybody. Unfortunately, there are many negative reviews by readers who never should have read or tried to read this book, and it is the fault of the publisher. In boldface on the Amazon page: "A thrilling novel of the senses...Perfect for readers of Kitchen Confidential and Blood, Bones and Butter." Ummm, no. This book is nothing at all like those books - if anything, it is more closely related to Salinger's Catcher in the Rye.What this book is not:It is not an inside look into the secrets of Union Square Cafe, one of Manhattan's top restaurants. The protagonist isn't ever in the kitchen. Also, it is not a "small-town girl struggles with the big city but stays true to herself so she can conquer her career and get the dreamy guy" book. It is definitely not a beach read. What this book is:An exceptionally well-written story of a smart but very troubled woman struggling to establish a life and make personal connections, and mostly failing. She comes of age the hard way, taking her lumps brought on by bad decisions and a toxic environment. She lacks the family support many take for granted, and her loneliness is expressed on almost every page. The pain and dysfunction are so intimately rendered, I would be shocked if the author didn't live much of it herself. Some reviewers have criticized the lack of development of supporting characters, notably the love interest, Jake. This may be a valid critique, but I am going to argue that this may by intentional by the author. A central struggle in this book is the narrator's inability to form true, enduring interpersonal connections that extend beyond the moment, despite her desperation to do just that. The secondary characters are seen through the narrator's eyes, she never gets to see their hidden selves. The aren't well developed because they never let her in.Some reviewers have also complained that there are no likable characters. If you need a hero protagonist who does always the right thing, this is not the book for you - this a grown-up book with realistic people, who (gasp!) make bad decisions. There are multiple accounts of drug use and sex, and if reading about that upsets you, then this won't be for you. But this is not a book about drugs or sex, and both appear realistically, not gratuitously. Not every book is for every person. I loved this book, and will be thinking about it for a long time.

Not worth it![Updated review: 2018]After watching the first episode of the new Starz series based on the book, I felt compelled to elaborate upon my original comment/review.As a current professional in the service industry, it pains me to see how both the book and the show portray the reality of working in a restaurant. Simply put, it is not realistic and is very unfocused - for instance, while it might be plausible that in some alternate universe a new hire would be tasting oysters for the first time in the walk-in with another server/bartender who just so happens to know how to perfectly shuck said oyster, it is, in my opinion, unrealistic that they would have the time to do so given the fact that just seconds before, service was to begin in 7 minutes.A few other things that the show (not book) got right/wrong:* the maitr’d addressing the staff as “friends” - no, does not happen (unless this is common in NYC restaurants)* Tess being tasked with filling the salt shakers as everyone else eats family meal - this is extremely unrealistic even in very upright/pretentious places (usually they have you complete a shift known as a “stage” and then decide to move forward but you are usually not tasked such as this)*Tess’ obvious unease and discomfort came across very realistically and did show how overwhelming beginning to work in the industry can be*Simone’s comments and general attitude were very realistic (every restaurant has that one server who’s been there for 1,000 years and basically runs the others or inspires fear/awe)Will be interesting to see how the series plays out but it is generally enjoyable, if not wrought with many flaws.

I love the language in this book. I love the POV. It's deeply self-conscious, which strikes me as intentional. I find the distinction between the MC's dialogue and her "in the future" reflection sophisticated.Yeah, there's drugs 'n' sex 'n' the headiness of being young. You are not wrong if that doesn't all resonate with you. But the achievement is lovely for those who do identify.Beauty, overblown self-focus, achy freedoms. I'll take it.I'm not a server, BTW. Just an anxious millennial who kinda feels it and likes seeing it laid out in text.

Eh. After hearing and reading all the great reviews (NYTimes, NPR), I really really wanted to like the book and felt some affinity towards the narrator, but couldn't help but feel exhausted at the end of the book (by my responsibility in finishing it!). Seemed like a millenial voice that I ultimately couldn't connect with, but I can't say it wasn't a good beach read.

Ugh.How is this a good book?First part - liked the writing. Beautiful, beautiful writing. But the truth is - the character is dull. And her love interest is even more dull. In fact, quite creepy. Don't understand her. Can't relate. Not interested. I actually wished she would either just shut up or even describe her apartment more. That is how -yawn- she is.The most interesting character is Simone. She could be the entire novel. She inspired, she provoked, and she still baffled - even at the end.Liked the very beginning and towards the end, but a good chunk was insipid. How this book inspired a television series, or discussion, or even a newspaper review - I'll never know.Book tells me there is still hope for those who dream.

If you have been a fan of Human Design or Gene Keys, this is a Great book to add to the collection. It gives fabulous visuals of each of the 64 combinations of Lines. Timely in making available a deeper understanding for each person who is investing in understanding the complexities of the world as held in the topography of their personal energetic fields.

Well-written. Makes a challenging subject accessible. Best of the books that I’ve read about Human Design. I recommend this book to all seekers.

I was disappointed in this book. I have the author's previous book, which I like a lot. I was expecting the same level of substantive content in this newer book. It just doesn't have this. It is mostly graphics. It gives only a brief sentence usually on the lines on each of the gates, and the source of the information seems to be based on Richard Rudd's transcendently amazing book The Gene Keys, which I have. This seems like a better introductory book to leave around on your coffee table so visitors will ask leading questions.

Another easy to read book from Chetan. Great explanations about the lines. Easy to read and to understand. Looking forward to his next book.

Excellent!

Good , book.

Perfect for what I needed!
