THE ENGLISH FLOWER GARDEN by William Robinson, was first published in 1883 and republished a number of times afterward. The current version available from Amazon is a reprint of the 15th Edition Robinson edited shortly before he died in the 1930s. This new reprint of the 15th Edition contains the "Botanical Revisions" prepared by Graham Stuart Thomas for the 1984 Edition, as well as a Forward by Henry Mitchell, and an introduction by Deborah Nevins.The book is set in old style type and contains numerous black and white illustrations--etchings of photos and prints of sketches. Some of them are a bit grainy, but many are not, and even the grainy ones have their good points. The content of each photo is quite interesting, and the sketches provide the "personal" touch one seldom sees in text books these days.In one print, taken at Gravetye Manor over 100 years ago, a climbing tea rose clings to a bamboo split-rail post fence surrounded by bush roses. In another photo, pots of 'Chimney Campanula' guard an old Jacobin chest sitting in a hall at Staunton Court. Sketches and photos are used to illustrate flowers all through the last half of the book--a flower dictionary with anectdotal and literary "blurbs" written by Robinson himself.Mitchell says Robinson "for all practical purposes invented gardening as we know it." Robinson's garden, 'Gravetye Manor' is a hop, skip and a jump from Sissinghurst, but few know of it's existence. Yet, Robinson is the "grandfather" of Sissinghurst, because Gertrude Jekyll who helped Mrs. Nichols design Sissinghurst, was Robinson's disciple. She literally followed in his footsteps and emulated his style.Robinson found most of the gardens of his day deplorable (19th Century Victorian). Those of the wealthy were modeled after the French and Italian formal plan, loaded with clipped Yews and bedded out every spring with ribbons of color provided by geraniums and marigolds. The walkways were lined with ornate scupture and surrounded by towering "imprisoned" evergreen shrubs and trees including clipped Yews which he loathed. He said these gardens reminded him of graveyards.His ideal was the cottage garden. He considered the garden a sacred space. He said one had to visit the houses of the poor to find truly beautiful gardens. Henry Mitchell reflecting on this says, "The thing that separates the true gardener from the mere architect or designer (and there is something extremely suspicious in the airs they give themselves nowadays) is that the gardener stands in awe before his violets, while others think of them in terms of [sic] plant materials."Robinson's ideas grew out of the Romantic movement of the late 18th and early 19th Century. His designs and thinking were reflected in the Arts and Crafts movement based on the importance of reconnecting to nature. His contemporaries in thinking were Ruskin, Morris, Stickly, Frank Lloyd Wright, and others we identify with this movement. I read this brief history of Central America while touring through 4 of these countries. It was very informative about past Mayan culture, but also the recent events which many of us in the US were unaware of while the civil wars raged in CA. I highly recommend it.

Summarising such a culturally dense region into 300 pages is impossible but well done with some nice side bars for interesting characters along the way. Always want to read more but then it wouldn't be `a brief history` would it?

Please remember to check your child's computer access. This was a very complete book and I agree with other reviewers that it is a good source of information... however my child google terms shortly after reading this book, and I did not realize that my safety settings do not block google images. :( Not too much harm done (I think!), but thought I should warn other parents... I explained to my child that computers save browsing history so people can see what others have searched/looked at, that there is inappropriate and harmful content online, that computers can get viruses or other issues when inappropriate links are opened, etc. But first I did freak out (while trying not to show it), so I hope this helps other parents! Also, if anyone has comments on this for how to handle, I would appreciate any suggestions (can you reply to a review? hmmm), thanks!

Please note that this book does not hold back when talking about sex nor does it hold back with its pictures. You need to decide your comfort levels about sex and what you feel is appropriate for your children.I found this book to be very informative and written at a level for preadolescent kids to be able to easily understand. It's laid out with illustrations and small comics in a way to help keep their attention. It does show naked bodies, genitalia , people having intercourse, and so forth. It covers a variety of topics that are important in today's world such as no means no, how to stay safe online, be careful what you text and email, and of course, safe sex practices.

I am amazed at how much I enjoyed this book. It's a great tasteful presentation of the human body with lots of scientific information on how babies are made all the way through childbirth. Surprisingly, it didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. It has short easy to read paragraphs, comic strips, and lots of diagrams. To me, it seems most age appropriate for ages 10-12, though every family/situation is different.*Let's be honest, what you really want to know about this book: how it defines sex!! So here it is: "When a woman and a man want to make a baby, they hug, and cuddle and kiss and feel very loving, and get very close to each other - so close that the man's penis goes inside the woman's vagina. When this happens, it is called "sexual intercourse."" No technical diagrams, just a picture of a man and women in bed kissing under a blanket with hearts in the air. It also very tastefully covers homosexuality in terms of love, and briefly touches on masturbation: "touching or rubbing the private parts of your own body because it feels good is called masturbation...every family has its own thoughts and feelings about masturbation. Some people and some religions think it's wrong to masturbate... most doctors agree that masturbation is perfectly healthy and normal - and cannot hurt your body."Hope this helps you decide if this is the right book for you!

So, for other moms/dads out there needing to have "the talk" with their child, I highly recommend this book as a guide. I'm a nurse, so i can talk alllll about anatomy and processes, but i wanted something with pictures i could use to facilitate that would be better than what i could draw and not so real that she'd be grossed out. I bought this book over a year ago waiting for the moment I'd need it. Well, today, it was finally time to address some of my 9yr old daughter's questions. What i like about this book is that it's worded so well that a child could potentially read it on their own, although i recommend reading together. We read through the first half together, saving the growth of a baby in utero for another time. I would summarize/ elaborate sometimes and answer any questions that came up, but to honest, this pretty much answered her questions. Plus, some of it is written in "comic book" style, which she loves reading and kept her attention. It even has a chapter on good touch, bad touch. We did read through the parts that discussed homosexuality and masturbation. I feel like it's important for her to understand. I also used those parts as a way to discuss how others may feel about those topics. It is a lot of information and I am sure she isn't going to remember it all, but I told her where I would keep it if she ever wants to refer back to it. Great tool!

Kindle edition - This edition is easy to read and is well illustrated. This is the first cookbook I have purchased in the Kindle format. I was a little apprehensive about it after reading some of the other reviews. The recipes are easy to follow and the measured ingredients appear in ounces and kilograms. Not all variations of the recipes are illustrated, but all basic recipes are illustrated. The table of contents easily directs you to the different recipe sections. The recipes are fabulous and each recipe lists the equipment you need. The author stresses the need for quality ingredients and provides the product names and sources for purchasing them. This information isboth practical and thorough, especially regarding flour types. I love this cookbook! Be warned, while some of the recipes assemble relatively quickly, others require some time. None of the recipes are back-breaking or highly stressful to make. Just enjoy the process!

We visited the Model Bakery on our trip to Napa 3 years ago. Since that time, we have longed for anything close to their phenomenal cinnamon rolls and sticky buns.NYC bakeries not even close. Food Network recipes falling short one after the other.Then we got word about their new cookbook. We preordered, and in our first weekend, made and devoured our first batch of cinnamon rolls. They were fantastic and as good as we remember having at the bakery.This Connecticut family is very happy and cannot wait to move on to those sticky buns.

If you are a novice baker, this book isn't for you. Having said that, considering this was written by a professional baker, the recipes are easily followed by a seasoned baker and/or someone who wants to up their skill level.

The croissants worked wonderfully for me, I've made them several times and each time they get better. Looking forward to trying other recipes. Only reason this doesn't get 4 stars is that I want a picture with each recipe. I'm a visual learner and I really needed to see for example, what the Danish should look like.Just made the English muffins. They tasted fabulous, everyone loved them, but they don't look like the cover of the book. I'm going to see if I can get a welder to make me some 4' rings and try again.

This book has been so wonderfully researched and written as to put it well into the "if I could only have one book" category. The author, who operates a large bakery, emphasizes simple, fresh, high quality ingredients, good basic equipment and sound techniques to reproduce her commercial success in the home kitchen. Her attention to effective time and space management is particularly noteworthy. I have never read a better cookbook.

Worth it for the plum galette recipe alone. We have eaten at the Model Bakery a few times, so I was excited to find a cookbook for their recipes. I am used to writing all over my recipes, so I had to get used to baking from recipes on my laptop, but I liked that I could bookmark it as a favorite and add my comments electronically. It's a brave new world!

Bought the book for the English Muffin recipe, but first tried the Chocolate Rads cookies. Made for my husband's Easter basket. Wow! If you are looking for a molten chocolate cookie, this is it. Can't wait to try the muffins.

Don't hesitate: Buy this book.Many baking cookbooks are encyclopedias of a thousand or more of recipes; in contrast, The Model Bakery Cookbook features a limited selection of 75 recipes, with the key difference that these are the time-proven recipes actually used in this famous Napa Valley bakery. A majority of the recipes in the book are accompanied by beautiful photographs, well-written step-by-step preparation instructions, helpful tips for the home baker, and explanations as why certain ingredients (e.g. butter versus oil) are called for in particular recipes. These recipes are the obvious result of 30 years of trial and effort as evidenced by words to the effect of, "if you're thinking about reducing the amount of sugar in this recipe, be warned: we've tried" and "you can freeze this", "when you're at the grocery store, don't confuse Marzipan with Almond Paste", and so forth. To me, a neophyte baker, reading these hints is like standing in the Model Bakery's kitchen as the baker reveals their secrets of the trade. In fact, about a fourth of the book is instructional and advisory in nature -- and I love it!At the request of my preteen daughter, the first thing I made from the cookbook were pecan encrusted Sticky Buns -- which are about the best danged things I've ever tasted. Prior to this cookbook, my level of kitchen skill was about sufficient to fry an egg and flip pancakes on Sunday mornings; now, thanks to the well-written and detailed explanations in this cookbook, I was kneading up a batch of schnecken dough like I'd been doing it all my life... this cookbook made it so easy!My only criticism, echoing that of other reviewers here, is that the type size is way too small when it comes to fractions; I literally needed a magnifying glass to read whether the recipe called for 1/3, 1/2, or 2/3 of a cup of this or that -- a major oversight by the authors and publisher Chronicle Books. The font size issue notwithstanding, the recipes in here are treasures.My daughter loved the Sticky Buns. At this moment, she's flipping the pages deciding what dad's going to make her for breakfast next Sunday. I secretly hope she chooses the English Muffins which look amazing!

Forget the stickers, this is great cheap gift for Harry Potter lovers of any age. The snitch is very well made and is accurate size wise. the wooden stand is stained, and it makes a nice addition to a bookshelf or desk. It's probably one of the cheapest and best made movie props that I have ever bought. I plan to buy again in the future as stocking stuffers and add-on gifts for fans of HP

I have been looking for a good snitch for my collection but reluctant to buy as i wanted something good and its so cheap. So UNBELIEVABLY happy with my purchase! Would recommend to amy harry potter FANatic like my self! Would give 10 stars if i could !! 10/10 amd the sticker book was a BONUS :)

Overall I was a bit disappointed when I opened the box and assembled my snitch, however the object is growing on me even with its imperfections. Certainly not for anyone wanting a very accurate replica, but a reasonable (albeit a bit on the high side for price given the quality) desk trinket for any Harry Potter fan to own. After joining my University's Quidditch team I wanted a Snitch of my own- this doesn't quite hit the mark of my expectations, but will do.Cons: I received two "Right" wings, which makes the Snitch appear strange when displayed in any formation. This bothers me the most!Paint job -especially around the midline where the two halves are sealed- is rough.The wings are a bit on the geometric extreme, but for production purposes understandable. Silver color isn't too bad, but a tone between silver and gold (such as a sandy gold) might have looked more accurate.Though the kit really isn't about the stickers, it is notable that the stickers have nothing to do with Quidditch- they contain a portrait of Harry, Cedric, and Draco (from the movie) and each house's crest as well as the Hogwarts crest. Though I like the crest stickers, Quidditch ones would have been fun.Pros: The ball is weighted, allowing it to be displayed with or without the stand in the proper orientation.The stand is a nice touch, and at the end of the day even though the design on the snitch isn't quite the same as the one in the movie, it's undeniably a Golden Snitch!

This is probably one of the best investments Ive made yet in Harry Potter Memorabilia. Its regulation size and looks real !! I too have been looking for a nice snitch for my collection and just couldnt find one that I liked. There are several ones out there, but they end up looking like a toy. This is well made, it has some weight, and the wings are stunning. You have to put the wings in the snitch, and they even give you a display stand. You just can't beat this for the price. Im ordering some to give as stocking stuffers for my Hogwarts pals. Its the perfect little gift for the Harry Potter fan.

This was the perfect edition to a Harry Potter bookshelf I was working on for my kids. I needed something small that fit in the space I had. I've gotten a lot of compliments on it. The best about it if the snitch. It's definitely a much better quality than I was excepting.

This is a great snitch replica. The only thing I don't like is the seam on the ball part, but it's really only noticeable up close and not much of an issue. It's something to be expected at this price point. Other than that, this is a great product to add to your collection. The stand is made of real wood and the sticker book is a nice little bonus. The snitch sits nicely on the stand, without tipping from the weight of the wings. The nine dollar price tag on this is worth it and I'm very happy with my purchase.

Pretty decent product. I wish it was a little more gold. It’s a bit dull in color but my son thought it was cool because it made it look old. It is good size. I used it as a cake topper and it spanned almost the entire diameter of the cake which was 8 inches. Cheaply made, but it’s inexpensive so you get what you pay for. Served it’s purpose perfectly.

Fully Illustrated snippets of history presented in a most engaging manner complete with a brief quiz at the end. To have artwork along with factual info on a subject I might not ordinarily pursue made it all the easier going down. I did have to resort to a pan-and-scan technique by zooming the book to 150% so as to make the wording more legible on my black-and-white kindle but still glad to have been able to read this book and given it ends with Lenin's death and the words "Joseph Stalin persuaded everyone that he should be the next leader of the Soviet Union, but that's another story..." I guess it's a good thing I'm wanting to own them all. Very good book!

As a person with the Russian background, I found this book detailed, exciting, interesting and very engaging. It's not easy to write about the Revolution in Russia (for kids), but this book successfully proved it's possible! We loved it!

Exactly what my grandson was looking for. Very pleased. The seller was a pleasure to deal with. Quick delivery. Highly Recommend!!!

This series is a cute idea, but it needs editing. The writing switches tenses and contains grammatical errors.

My 9 year old son is a total geography/history nerd. He usually read and re-reads books like this multiple times. However, he told me he did not like book at all. He looked at once and has not picked it up again. He said the book did not give enough information about the Russian Revolution and was very boring. I give it two stars instead of one because at least they attempted to make a children's book on the Russian Revolution. I have not been about to find another child appropriate book on the matter.
