This was my third Lipman. I also met Elinor Lipman on the book tour for the first two books I Can’t Complain, a delicious book of essays, and The View from Penthouse B. To say we had a wonderful interaction is an understatement, she was SIMPLY DIVINE! The Family Man is a wonderful comic novel that keeps the reader tucked into bed or lounging on a couch even when one isn’t doing that. Instantly I fell for the character of Henry who is a (in my opinion) contented homosexual. I loved having a contented homosexual. His budding relationship with Todd made me swoon. The over the top characters of Denise and Thalia only made me love this book more. Elinor Lipman truly knows how to write a wild madcap comedy and make it wonderful and delicious and not mundane or lame.

I loved this book from its first pages. The main character, a gay man who only came to terms with his sexuality after a failed marriage during which he'd adopted his wife's daughter after her first husband died, is completely endearing and engaging. I really wanted to keep reading and find out what happens as he tries to re-connect with this "daughter" after losing parental rights when he came out and his ex-wife remarried. The plot may not be completely plausible, but the characters are so believable that it really doesn't matter. A delightful story about charming people.

The premises was so good I was excited to start reading it. The story was okay but to me the characters were underdeveloped and the while the story started out well it then began to drag only to have a quick tie up loose ends finish. I hate to make negative comments because I know the writer worked hard on it. I wouldn't say don't read it because there were fun parts. I would just say keep your expectations low.

A great concept but sorely weakened by making too many of the characters caricatures. Leif, Denise, especially Leif were not believable. The mother~daughter relationship was not at all developed. Also, I did not enjoy the cavalier and disdainful treatment of autism. the subject could have been sensitively represented. Todd and Henry are the most realistic characters and their relationship is treated as any other. There is no drama, heavy stereotyping or even complex layers to the relationship, making it normal. It is the only aspect of the book that works as I imagine the author intended. The book is not written for a reader seeking an entertaining or "meaty" read.R

My favorite novelist. I have read and enjoyed everyhing she has written.

Sometimes you want a book that makes you feel good. This book made me feel good by the end. Through circumstance and life in general people have grown apart. A father and step daughter are reunited and a wonderful tale is woven. By the end I still love the characters I enjoyed from the beginning and that's how I like my stories. Great summer read!

Light and enjoyable read that starts out great and stumbles about half way through. I really liked the how the author created the protagonist and his new relationship with his step-daughter. Unfortunately, a trumped up romance between the daughter and movie star sends the book quickly down hill. Would have rather explored Henry's (the protagonist) relationship with his quirky, opinionated therapist. Now, THAT would have been a good read....

Ever since my days of only reading books with pastel covers and subsequent introduction to Isabel's Bed I have been a die hard Elinor Lipman fan. I've read everything she's published, own them all and love them all. I can very safely say she's never written a book-much less a chapter-that I didn't like.When I started "The Family Man" though I thought that was all about to change. Lipman's normal writing style is very descriptive-lots of explained body language written into the text and historical background on characters and tons of detail about clothing, food and architecture. When you add in her slightly soap opera-ish plots with all of their melodrama and black humor you get these perfect, fun books with fast paced plots that aren't too serious and oodles of characters to fall in love with.But Lipman's latest book is different. For one thing, "The Family Man" is about ninety percent witty dialog (all well written) with very sparse descriptions of anything-including the characters emotions. And then there's the plot-the reuniting of retired gay lawyer Henry Archer with his once upon a time adopted daughter Thalia after her second adopted father's death 24 years after he gave up a custody battle that had him painted as unfit because of his sexuality-and the subsequent changes in his love life and general happiness and interest level afterward. I know it sounds complicated but it's really, really not. This is a very simple book. The writing style is simple, the plot (which is barely even there, it's more of a gradual progression of events with a total lack of conflict) is simple and while the book does come off as rather charming it's almost a compete 180 from Lipman's other books. The whole thing kind of has the feel of a novella too it (think "Shopgirl" with less emotional depth and poignancy) including the length. Despite its deceptive 300 page total this is a very small book with large text and huge margins.There's nothing really bad about this novel, but it really was not what I expected from Lipman. It's true that I've always enjoyed her books written in first person better than those written in third (and this one is in third) but that's not even really the issue. This book just reads like a different author altogether wrote it. As it stands on its own it's a cute, charming little book with a lot of snappy talk too it that I did enjoy but it doesn't really compare to Isabel's Bed,The Inn at Lake Devine or The Pursuit of Alice Thrift.If I'd never read anything else by Lipman I'd say four stars, but with my experience of her other novels I have to admit to being disappointed by this one with its lack of detail and emotional characterization.Three stars. I'd wait for the paperback version folks, or get this one from the library before committing to buy.

I bought this as a gift for a friend but am considering getting it for myself as well. As a cook one can always learn more about any subject and this book is one of the best fundamental baking books that I have seen. Great pictures illustrating what to bake and how to bake it. I did not bake anything out of this cookbook, but my brother has and he recommended it highly and has been using it at least once a week to bake something, mostly cakes, with great results.My friend has 3 daughters and she really enjoys teaching them to bake, that is why I got this for her. It is a great book for that purpose and they were really thrilled with it.

This book will make you fall in love with baking. The recipes are detailed with lots of pictures. My favorite is the cake with raisins, I made it the other day and it was gone within minutes. I have many dessert cookbooks, but this one beats them all with its neat design, beautiful pictures and delicious recipe variety.

A gift to my aspiring baker granddaughter, who is 11. She loves the book! She appreciates the photos of each step & how the finished product should look! Can't wait to try the goodies she is planning on making!

I love Jane Horby's writing style and the layout of her cookbooks. The recipes are clear, easy to follow and most importantly, delicious! This is definitely a cookbook with a European/British flair, which was a nice addition to my Southern cooking staples.

I first checked this book out from the public library and liked it so much I bought my own copy. I have been baking for about 4 decades, since I was old enough to stand on a chair and help my mom, and therefore cannot comment on the utility of the beautiful step-by-step illustrations. However, the many large color photographs are inspirational—definitely answering the "what to bake" question in a way that is often more compelling than smaller food blog photos. I have tried three different cake recipes from the book. All have worked perfectly as written and all have received rave reviews from guests and family. Ingredients were not hard to find in my small city grocery. This is definitely a fun book to browse when the urge to bake strikes!

Purchased as a gift for an accomplished, frequent baker. I was afraid the book might be too simplified for her, but it wasn't. There are a nice mix of easy and challenging recipes to please any baker.

Easy to follow instructions on really awesome treats!

A big fat book that is very comprehensive and up-to-date. Expensive like all school textbooks are. Required reading for our nursing school. A bit difficult to carry around in a book bag with all my other nursing books. Perhaps someday all higher education classes will be using digital versions of these books, which will be good for the environment and on students' backs!

I bought this book because it was recommended for learning dosages during nursing school. I got a lot of use out of it and it definitely helped me to learn medication dosages. The practice problems are the best workout for the brain and there are plenty of them in this book. Helped me pass the dosage test with a 100%!

Very helpful!. It teaches you how to do the problem step-by-step with different ways. The answer key also provides directions on how they came to that answer. I'm now a dosage calculating pro!

Using them with my 4yr old. Perfect. Lots of cards, great price, better than brick and mortar retailers. Highly recommend to help identify letters/words/numbers.

Slightly misleading. Theread are 240 cards in this deck but probably 20 pictures repeated on all the cards. I was hoping to use it for words, letters, then numbers later...but definitely not going to work for now. They are not hard and fairly flimsy for anyone who is looking for something that will last.

Good Quality. We have only used the ABC cards but it does appear to come with a step 2 and 3 that are more complex. Son loves them. Pictures are easily recognizable.

Pulled these out asap and was suprised to learn ny kid knew more words and letters than i thought. These were exactly what I was looking for.

The intended purpose of the card is as stated, however, the cards themselves were flimsy and not durable. Too many to laminate to make it worthwhile.

meh. Not the comprehensive guide I was hoping for. More of a high-level overview. I didn't end up referencing this book at all when building a 370hp/440tq 351W. Kind of a let down.

I guess the third times a charm. After ordering both the other higher rated Ford small block books found on Amazon, only to find extremely outdated info, I finally found what I was looking for. The other two were so bad I found zero use and returned them each time ordering another looking for up to date info.Things like EFI, GT40P heads, intakes, injectors were not to be found in the others at all. This one however is very up to date with all that stuff. It also gives you comparison info, injector ohm info, EVERYTHING about the MODERN Ford small blocks. This is going to be read from front to back many times.I have to hand it to Amazon too. They accepted my two returns in a row with no problems or questions until I found what I was looking for. If you're looking for the best of the best, this is it. The most useful info I could find in one place by quite a bit.I won't be returning this one. Finally have a smile on my face as I build my modern 302 motor to drop in my jeep and abuse off-road.

Great fun. I loved spending time in the author's company while reading this book AND I am sure I would enjoy recreating (some segment of) his journey, BUT I'm not so sure I'd want to go with him. As I like to note:1. There is no travel writer like a British travel writer.2. There is no eccentric like a British eccentric.These two facts are not unrelated.This is NOT the Japan of "Lost in Translation" or "Black Rain". This is a walk through the homely and homey back side of Japan, a counterpoint (more than a foundation) to the glittering Tokyo of popular western imagination. If you enjoy a book that takes you, not to the hotel lobbies and museums and oh-so-mystical touristic shrines, but to the fraying everyday, if you enjoy seeing a behind the stereotypes of a culture, this is fun stuff.That said, this book dates from 20 years ago, and I'm afraid that the scenes of back-of-beyond-Japan that the author describes have now faded from this world. So, all the more reason to climb into this book as a time machine! Also it's a great cross cultural study... I especially enjoyed the scenes he recounts where, after 10 minutes of conversation in Japanese, he is told "no, we can't serve/house foreigners, as we don't speak English". The author's reply "but we've been speaking in Japanese for 10 minutes" usually does not save the day for him. Been there, done that... as we used to say, 20 years ago.

Alan Booth walked the entire way, alone, from Cape Soya, on the far northern tip of the island of Hokkaido, to Cape Sata, as the title states, at the far southern end of the island of Kyushu. The subtitle states that it was a 2000-mile walk but he kept track of it in the local (and global) measure of kilometers, and felt it was a bit more, at 3,300 km. He therefore walked across three of the main Japanese islands (which included the main one of Honshu); he did not cross the fourth main island, Shikoku. It took him 128 days; he timed it right in terms of weather, starting in June in Hokkaido, with some snow still on the peaks, and ending in the October, as the leaves were turning, and it was becoming colder, in Kyushu. He never states the year; one reviewer suggest 1977, another, the early `80's. Clearly it was before 1986, when the book was first published.It is a marvelous guide for non-Japanese on what to expect in the rural areas of Japan. Most certainly, he is "off the beaten track," never traveling through Tokyo or Kyoto. It is also about Japan, not Alan Booth "finding himself." Knowledge about the author comes in bits and pieces, almost incidentally. He was in theater, and moved to Japan in 1970. He married a Japanese woman, and does speak the language (despite what some natives think!). Like a good Englishman, he drinks beer, and the references to this vital "foot gasoline," as he says, are frequent. He never once mentions drinking water! Almost always, he stays in one of the local inns, called "ryokans"; generally, it is possible to walk from one village to another, all of which seem to have them. He is offered numerous rides, in automobiles, which he always declines, usually to the amazement (and sometimes the anger) of the driver.He commences his book by saying that it is absurd to try to make sweeping generalizations about 120 million people. His meetings are the chance encounters of the road, generally quite brief. They are a wide spectrum, the good and the bad, but in general he does experience "the kindness of strangers," particularly towards foreigners, though he makes the exception for young boys, who tend to jeer at him, and wishes for more encounters with young girls, who are invariably polite. He has a wry sense of humor, most often conveyed when he tells anecdotes involving speaking Japanese with someone for 5-10 minutes, and yet they are still reluctant to let him stay in their ryokan, because he does not speak Japanese, and, of course, could not eat with chopsticks! "What was I speaking, Swahili"?Booth does "nuance." There are many "Japans." For example: "Crossing from Niigata to Toyama had reminded me a little of crossing from Yugoslavia to Austria: from a land of calloused laborers to one where slightly obese people consume cream pastries and have safe-deposit boxes in air-conditioned banks." Ever observant, he highlights some of the cultural differences; consider: "....I couldn't help noticing how different was the determinedly sanctimonious atmosphere that pervades most Christian churches from the breezy nonchalance with which visitors treat the religious monuments of Japan." Generalizations, there are a few: "And then the litany began: tiny country, no natural resources, misunderstood by everyone..." Booth even has observations about one of the classic divides between men and women: Why men don't ask directions! And the answer is: more often than not, the person questioned doesn't know, or gives the wrong directions!Booth left us far too soon, dying of colon cancer, in his 40's. In his legacy he has also left us Looking for the Lost: Journeys Through a Vanishing Japan (Kodansha Globe) which I intend to read. I envy his journey, and loved the way that he told the story. With his inspiration, perhaps I can emulate 7-day segments, with a few being in the national parks. 5-stars, plus.

But not only did he decide to walk the whole way he also decides to stick to the back roads, the rural areas of Japan, to get in touch with the real Japan and to stay only in Japanese style inns. In some places he is treated like family and in other places like an invader. After spending seven years in Japan, having a Japanese wife and learning about Japan you would think a walk, even if it is a hard one, would not be so bad. But in some cases it is terrible.He runs into silent tramps, barking dogs, snotty high school boys, polite high school girls, nervous inn keepers, loud businessmen and giggling maids. He makes mistakes, he founds wonderful discoveries and he founds sad scenes of life and death in 20th Century Japan. Did he learn anything? No. Did he enjoy himself? Yes. Yet, no matter how hard he tried, much of the time he was treated like a foreigner.

Only part-way through this walk but even now it is like those characters Alan met and even Alan himself, are alive and are right this very moment, interacting with each other as I look on as a movie camera recording the scene.A truly beautiful glimpse of Japan which even today, may be experienced as Alan did, simply by allowing Kami to flow without obstruction.

Alan Booth was a true master of the genre. It breaks my heart twice that he died too early: once for the tragedy of a man leaving a family behind, and once for an author of this quality leaving an audience wanting more. No doubt that if he had lived, he would have continued to fascinate us, entertain us, teach us with his prose.I've lived in Japan twice and am preparing to return for a third stay. Booth nails it right down.Mr. Booth, wherever you are, you done good.

I am moving to Japan and this book as wonderful to read.
