Review

"This book presents a good cross section of theoretical and practical material, providing the student with a good grounding in the fundamentals as well as examples and opportunities to practice solving engineering problems related to fracture. I especially like the historical approach taken in this book, which shows how the field has developed rapidly over the past 75 years. This gives the student an appreciation of how recently the field has emerged and how it is still evolving."― Michael H. Santare, University of Delaware, USA

I live and work as a Catholic deacon in southwest Honduras. I’ve been here for more than eleven years and thus I have lived through much of what Dan Frank writes about in her recent book, The Long Honduran Night: Resistance, Terror, and the United States in the Aftermath of the Coup.I have not found many books written in English on Honduras and so I welcome this book. It is not a history per se, but it’s a work that combines research, advocacy, and personal experience.Events are often related in a vacuum, with just statistics. Dr. Frank includes her own experiences accompanying people in Honduras and advocating for Honduras in US, even in the halls of Congress. This, very often, helps give a human face to statistics. The work is clearly critical of the Honduran government and the US support of its repressive tactics, as well as of the Honduran political, social, and economic elites. This generally does not become an ideological rant, as I’ve found in some writers. I think her reflection on her many experiences with Hondurans provides a buffer to that temptation. Her work is very well documented, with numerous footnotes. This book helped me to reflect on these years in Honduras. I live in a relatively peaceful part of the country which, as I understand, lacks a long and deep history of political radicalism, like what can be found on the northern coast and in the larger cities. So I didn’t experience the repression to the extent that she did.The book is worth a read – though I wonder if it will be understood well by those who don’t know the history of Honduras of this epoch. We still need a few good histories and social analyses of the last twenty years of life in Honduras. Dr. Frank’s work is a start.

I have been waiting for this book for years, waiting for someone to tell the story of the coup and everything that came after. Dana Frank has done a wonderful job, weaving the story of her own political awakening and development into that of the Honduran people who have fought so bravely and beautifully against an illegal and murderous regime. Buy this book!

If you are interested in knowing about the migrant caravans, this book gives you a history of the first large caravans that came from Honduras. Today we have similar caravans from Guatemala, coming here for similar reasons. If you want to know the full story, and not just what you hear in sound bytes, read this book.

Very dull and disappointing. This is supposed to be a "deeply personal" account but Frank's only first-hand witness is to protest marches in Honduras (during her occasional visits to the country) and lobbying efforts in Washington. Otherwise she just describes communications she got from other people about events in Honduras and relies extensively on secondary sources such as newspapers. None of the activists she met in Honduras come alive as people and I got unbearably weary from the constant barrage of acronyms. Frank is an academic. She would have been better off writing a scholarly monograph about Honduras than attempting -- and failing -- to produce a piece of personal reportage.

I liked to read the truth of what happened in Honduras during the Obama Administration

Very informatic , great to know

to understand what is happening at our southern border and to understand how Congress makes foreign policy. While some of the material is necessarily grim, the author's emphasis on her experience, and on the heroic resistance, make the book a surprisingly lively read.

Radiobiology for the Radiologist

Review

“This is the definitive resource for the study and application of radiobiology to diagnostic radiology and radiation oncology. The value of this book to both these fields is readily apparent considering that the first edition, published in 1972, was written by the current senior editor, Dr. Eric Hall. Hall (subsequently Hall and Giaccia) has served as the leading textbook of radiobiology used by generations of radiologists and radiation oncology residents. This edition continues to provide a contemporary update for those seeking an understanding of radiobiology with a focus on its application in medicine. The purpose is to provide a thorough introduction to radiobiology for resident physicians in radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation oncology. The book is the definitive resource for these purposes and an essential addition to the library of all residents in these fields. The online format will be of great value to the majority of readers who prefer ebooks to print books, particularly the residents who are the primary audience. The book is geared to resident physicians but none-the-less is a highly valuable resource to practicing physicians and other researchers seeking understanding of radiobiology. The authors are pre-eminent authorities in this field. As with prior editions, the book is extremely well organized, including at the end of each chapter a "Summary of Pertinent Conclusions" section highlighting the concepts and key points. The book is divided into sections for students of diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation oncology (chapters 1-16), followed by a section specifically for students of radiation oncology (chapters 17-28). There are numerous figures in all chapters that significantly complement the written text. For nearly 50 years, this has served as the definitive textbook of radiobiology. The authors admirably provide timely and essential updates which continue to make this book an essential addition to the library of any individual interested in radiobiology or any institution which serves such an audience.Beyond being a definitive resource on this topic, the authors elucidate the details of the many aspects of radiobiology in a concise yet complete manner. Well done!"Weighted Numerical Score: 95 - 4 Stars!Doodys Publishers' Club, June 2018

This textbook was used for a graduate-level course I recently completed in Radiation Biology, part of a Masters Degree program in Radiation Health Physics. The material is thorough and begins with the fundamental physics and chemistry that are necessary to understand the effects of radiation on cells, continuing to cover the radiosensitivity of cells at various points of their mitotic cycles, the impact of oxygen levels in cells, radiation dose levels and effects, treatments and historical exposures, and much more. The text is generously supplemented with illustrations, photographs, and charts. Each chapter concludes with a 'summary of pertinent conclusions' which help to reinforce the key concepts covered. For students with the necessary background this is a very readable text, and it could be used for self-study or reference. In my case it supplements lectures that I find invaluable in learning the information and concepts that are conveyed. The first section of the book, comprising chapters 1 through 16, are intended for students of diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation oncology. The second section continues into more detail on clinical aspects of radiotherapy and treatment, for students of radiation oncology. The text is now in its 8th edition, updated in October 2017 by the original authors, Eric Hall of Columbia University, and Amato Giaccia of Stanford. The first edition of the book was issued in July 1972, nearly 47 years ago as I write this review.A particularly welcome feature of the hardcover version of the text that I purchased is that it includes (at no additional charge) an 'enhanced eBook' that can be downloaded and accessed from computer, tablet or phone. I have downloaded the text myself and it is completely equivalent to the hardcover and easily navigated, although personally I much prefer reading the textbook itself. Still, I have the book on my phone and should I find myself wanting to refer to it when away from my office or computer, it is right there with me and can be easily accessed and searched. This is considered to be one of the key reference texts for this subject material, and is regularly found on the bookshelves of professionals in the field. The longevity of this text and the fact that the authors have continued to keep it updated over the years give me great confidence in it as a foundation for my own studies and work in this area.

Adding my review of Let's Explore the Australian Outback: Australia Travel Guide for Kids as an ebook, so bare with me. I downloaded this instantly from amazon after purchase, to my cell phone to use with my free kindle app on phone. Unfortunately, my actual Kindle Fire was having difficulties and I could not download to it. So my review is based on using a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone screen. This is a well written short book on Australia. The paragraphs are short and to the point, making it an easy read for all ages. Children can understand the text in this ebook easily. It is interesting information, making learning about Australia fun and exciting. The pictures used in this book are actual photographs of Australia. Each photo is highly detailed and of great quality. The photos help the information link together for the reader. I enjoyed looking at each photograph while reading the information provided.Overall, this book flows well, and contains a great deal of information about Australia and its cities. The photos in this book are beautiful and interesting to look at. I enjoyed reading this book, and recommend it to anyone to read and learn all about Australia.I received this ebook for free or a discounted price to offer my honest opinion concerning this ebook. My review is based on my personal trial of this ebook. I understand the importance of an honest review to help other consumers make an educated purchase. I hope you have found my review helpful.

This book about the Australian Outback really has awesome pictures in it. Very high quality pictures, some of them will just take your breath away. After looking and reading this book about Australia, people of all ages will probably want to go on a trip there. I' ve always wanted to travel to Australia, because of back pain I can't sit that long to travel. Ever since I was young, I've had an interest in Australia.Probably because my Grandparents and a few other people I know, have been there and have said how Wonderful it is. The book was interesting and educational. One of the things I found out was about the Kakadu National Park, it has over 280 bird species which is about 1/3 of the birds in all of Australia. I was hoping for a picture of some of the birds. The book had a nice picture of Kakadu National Park, but No Birds.Another interesting thing I read about in this book, was about the Nullarbor Plain, there they have up to 100,000 wild camels! These camels were used to build railroads. The camels were then abandoned after they were done using them. That sounds so sad.In the Australia Outback book, there was a cool picture of a cave like dwelling, called a Dugout, that people actually live in! In the town of Coober Pedy, people living there do that to stay out of the "Scorching Heat". I didn't know, until I read this book, that the Outback takes up the most area in Australia. I also learned that in the Outback, that there are plenty of flat lands, as well as rock formations, and at least one mountain range. To me it looks like mostly dry plains. That kind of surprised me, I thought Australia was greener than that. The book, Let's Explore The Australian Outback is interesting, educational and fun. This is a book I'd want to pick up and look through more than just once.** Disclaimer I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review here.** I hope my review helped in some way.

This was pretty well-received among the adults of our group because of the fantastic pictures and little tidbits of information, although there was frustration the book was so short. The 7-12 year old children interested in geography loved the pictures and the feel that Australia was exotic, but were mostly bored by the blurbs and also wondered if these were the only notable parts of the Australian Outback or if there were more. 13 to about 25 loved the pictures, was frustrated by the short length, also wondered if these were the only notable parts of the Outback and felt the information shared per place wasn't boring but wasn't detailed enough. There's some truly spectacular pictures in here and some credit has to be given for that. But the book doesn't effectively capitalize on the interest these pictures generate. Including more info about how the Aboriginal people, later colonists and modern Australians interacted with this land would've helped hook everyone and answer a number of questions asked by the various age groups. Beyond info about temperature info was desired about what was native and introduced plant and animal life like in each of the areas in the book. Everyone loved the tidbit about camels, but wanted more info on animal and plant life. Lots of comments centered on this book being far too sparse with info to feel like you'd actually explored the Outback like the title states. This gets such a high star rating because the pictures captured everybody's interest from 7 on up and because there were a few tidbits, like the one on camels, that were especially interesting and illustrative of life there. I received this book at a free or discounted rate in exchange for my honest review. To clarify how I view the rating system, five stars = A, four stars = B, three stars = C, two stars = D, and one star = F. The Road to Little Dribbling: Adventures of an American in Britain, by Bill Bryson

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of January 2016: The Road to Little Dribbling comes twenty years after Bill Bryson’s Notes from a Small Island, in which he first described his love affair with his adopted Great Britain. That first book was laugh-out-loud funny, and so is this one. It opens with Bryson describing (hilariously) the perils of growing older, eventually revealing the author’s successful passing of the Life in Britain Knowledge Test (thus, making him a British citizen). The rest of the book follows that pattern: Bryson describes getting older, and he describes Great Britain via a trip he took across the 700 mile long island. While he tried to avoid places he visited in Notes from a Small Island—he does revisit Dover—those who read the first book will enjoy a welcome sense of the familiar—even if Bryson appears to have grown a little more cynical and angry with age. But give the guy a break: the world is changing, even his beloved “cozy and embraceable” island. And as he writes in the book, “I recently realized with dismay that I am even too old for early onset dementia. Any dementia I get will be right on time.” --Chris Schluep

Review

Praise for The Road to Little Dribbling:"Although he's now entering what he fondly calls his 'dotage,' the 64-year-old Bryson seems merely to have sharpened both his charms and his crotchets. As the title of The Road to Little Dribbling suggests, he remains devoted to Britain's eccentric place names as well as its eccentric pastimes." —Alida Becker, The New York Times Book Review"[Y]ou could hardly ask for a better guide to Great Britain than Bill Bryson.  Bryson’s new book is in most ways a worthy successor and sequel to his classic Notes From A Small Island. Like its predecessor, The Road to Little Dribbling is a travel memoir, combining adventures and observations from his travels around the island nation with recounting of his life there, off and mostly on, over the last four decades.  Bryson is such a good writer that even if you don’t especially go in for travel books, he makes reading this book worthwhile."—Nancy Klingener, Miami Herald"...Bryson’s capacity for wonder at the beauty of his adopted homeland seems to have only grown with time.... Britain is still his home four decades later, a period in which he went from lowly scribe at small-town British papers to best-selling travel writer. But he retains an outsider’s appreciation for a country that first struck him as 'wholly strange ... and yet somehow marvelous.”—Griff Witte, Washington Post“Such a pleasure to once again travel the lanes and walking paths of Britain in the company of Bill Bryson! He’s a little older now, and not necessarily wiser, but he’s as delightful and irascible a guide as anyone could ever wish to have, as he rediscovers this somewhat careworn land and finds it as endearing (mostly) as ever. It’s a rare book that will make me laugh out loud. This one did, over and over.” —Erik Larson, author of Dead Wake and The Devil in the White City"There’s a whole lot of “went to a charming little village named Bloke-on-Weed, had a look around, a cupof tea, and moved on” in Bryson’s most recent toddle around Britain. Writing 20 years after his bestselling Notes from a Small Island, Bryson concocts another trip through his homeland of 40 years bydetermining the longest distance one could travel in Britain in a straight line... This being Bryson, one chuckles every couple of pages, of course, saying, 'yup, that sounds about right,' to his curmudgeonly commentary on everything from excess traffic and litter to rude sales clerks. One also feels the thrum of wanderlust as Bryson encounters another gem of a town or pip of a pub. And therein lies the charm of armchair traveling with Bryson. He clearly adores his adopted country. There are no better views, finer hikes, more glorious castles, or statelier grounds than the ones he finds, and Bryson takes readers on a lark of a walk across this small island with megamagnetism."—Booklist, starred review"Fans should expect to chuckle, snort, snigger, grunt, laugh out loud and shake with recognition…a clotted cream and homemade jam scone of a treat." —Sunday Times"At its best as the history of a love affair, the very special relationship between Bryson and Britain. We remain lucky to have him." —Matthew Engel, Financial Times"Is it the funniest travel book I’ve read all year? Of course it is." —Daily Telegraph  "We have a tradition in this country of literary teddy bears—John Betjeman and Alan Bennett among them—whose cutting critiques of the absurdities and hypocrisies of the British people are carried out with such wit and good humour that they become national treasures. Bill Bryson is American but is now firmly established in the British teddy bear pantheon... The fact that this wonderful writer can unerringly catalogue all our faults and is still happy to put up with us should make every British reader’s chest swell with pride." —Jake Kerridge, Sunday Express  "The truly great thing about Bryson is that he really cares and is insanely curious... Reading his work is like going on holiday with the members of Monty Python." —Chris Taylor, Mashable  "There were moments when I snorted out loud with laughter while reading this book in public... He can be as gloriously silly as ever." —The London Times  "The observation, the wit, the geniality of Bryson’s inimitable words illuminate ever chapter." —Terry Wogan, Irish Times  "Everybody loves Bill Bryson, don’t they? He’s clever, witty, entertaining, a great companion... his research is on show here, producing insight, wisdom and startling nuggets of information... Bill Bryson and his new book are the dog’s bollocks." —Independent on Sunday  "Stuffed with eye-opening facts and statistics..... Bryson's charm and wit continue to float off the page....Recognising oneself is part of the pleasure of reading Bryson's mostly affable rants about Britain and Britishness."  —Daily Mail"His millions of readers will probably enjoy this just as much as its predecessor." —Observer"We go to him less for insights—though there are plenty of these—and more for the pleasure of his company. And he can be very funny indeed. Almost every page has a line worth quoting." —Glasgow Herald"At last, Bill Bryson has got back to what he does best—penning travel books that educate, inform and will have you laughing out loud... I was chuckling away by page four and soaking up his historic facts to impress my mates with. Sure to be a bestseller." —Sun"Bryson has no equal. He combines the charm and humour of Michael Palin with the cantankerousness of Victor Meldrew and the result is a benign intolerance that makes for a gloriously funny read." —Daily Express

By giving Bill Bryson 3 stars, I feel like I am committing a heresy but I've thought about it long and hard and 3 stars is all this book warrants. I love Bill Bryson's writing, especially his travel writing, but this book is just not up to his standard. It feels like it was thrown together simply as a money-making exercise. There is no underlying thread to the book, there is no journey. It's a series of day trips to places he would have been going to anyway. The underlying theme is supposed to be the "Bryson line" but he barely refers to it after the first few pages and the only places he really visits along the line are the two ends. Most of the other places are nowhere near the line. He also includes a lot of material from other books, either it was in the book or it was stuff he had left over after finishing the book. I'm sorry Bill, you can do (and have done) better than this.

Bill Bryson may be wearing out his welcome. My English friends call him "Bryson the Curmudgeon." Unhappy with the US, he becomes a UK citizen and spends his time in rapture over the countryside and scathing about the people. This follow-on to Notes from a Small Island becomes what PT Barnum warned about: "Never follow an elephant act with another elephant act." In places Bryson is dead-on accurate. I know because I've visited some of the same out of the way places and pubs. But in other places he's simply mean. Maybe it's creeping age.

A very good opening and close were largely out of synch with the rest of the tone of the book. I have read and enjoyed many of the author's books beginning with Notes From a Small Island which I purchased at a small independent bookstore in Manchester England. Time has not mellowed the author, I did not find him to be a "playful curmudgeon" but rather too often being a grumpy old man. I also thought that someone who has so much respect for the English language could find other ways to voice displeasure rather than curse words and foul language. It's unfortunate that so many interesting observations about his adopted home have to be tainted in this way. It makes his apparent affection for the place expressed in the last few pages less believable, or maybe understandable.

I've greatly enjoyed many of Bill Bryson's prior works, but this one left me concerned about the drift to curmudgeonly thinking from focusing on what he doesn't like more than what is likable. Also, often politics enters many of Bill's books but never to this extent. The section on immigration Bill, sadly, embraced a straw man argument to stake out a position no one disagrees with.Being a logical person myself, seeing this descent into the illogical abyss left me wishing I had read a different book.Still, it's got 2 stars because there was a lot of interesting information. I've made 6 trips to the UK and I was often taking a new tidbit of info Bill exposed then looking up more information. My wife is determined to see the Ridley Mounds described in the books. I wonder what future generation will completely misinterpret the structure. This begs the question of how much guessing do we do looking at the many ancient structures. Was it really a super religious site, or someone's fanciful whim, or something in between.I just found it hard to enjoy the fun information combined with the straw man arguments pushing a liberal perspective yet at the same time bashing the actions of liberal government.

On the one hand he is a very funny and entertaining writer; no one can make me laugh out loud while reading the way he can. Also, he is so compelling in his praise and vivid in his descriptions; I really want to visit the places about which he writes. On the other hand, the angry old man stuff gets tiring. His liberal use of the word "idiot" evidences a real inner anger he ought to get under control. A poor government worker just doing their job by enforcing a rule isn't just wrong in Bill's eyes; he is an idiot...some lower being to be scorned for doing his job. It is an attitude the author has, and it is both tiring and troubling.I finally figured it out, though. I love travel because of the people on the way that I meet. Bill loves travel despite the people on the way that he meets.

From the Back Cover

She is a peasant. She is a student. She is a soldier. She is a goddess. When Rin aced the Keju—the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to study at the academies—it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who always thought they’d be able to marry Rin off to further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was now finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard—the most elite military school in the Nikara Empire—was even more surprising. But surprises aren’t always good.Being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Rin is targeted from the outset by rival classmates because of her color, poverty, and gender. Driven to desperation, she discovers she possesses a lethal, unearthly power—an aptitude for the nearly mythical art of shamanism. Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of a seemingly insane teacher and psychoactive substances, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive—and that mastering control over her powers could mean more than just surviving school. For even though the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The militarily advanced Federation occupied the Nikara Empire for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most of the people in the Empire would rather forget their painful history, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away.Rin’s shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god who has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her her humanity. And it may already be too late.

First the good parts:- Solid, enjoyable world-building, with the competing philosophies of shamanism, the push towards modernization and conformity, and the historical ebb and flow of power and subjugation being the standouts. I found myself oddly intrigued by the history of martial arts.- The military portions, while exceedingly brutal (do NOT mistake this for YA and give it to your child -- hell, even if you're an adult be prepared for graphic violence, including sexual), were a lot of fun. There's a mix of practical warfare, including chemical weapons and incendiary devices, with magical stuff that was honestly pretty engaging.- A common problem when you bring gods and magic into fantasy is "Why is there any conflict if the characters are this powerful?". That is not present here. The consequences of trying this are shown, and they are BANANAS. It's great.- If you like characters who are allowed to be horrible people, then you will not be disappointed here. I saw another review that said the heroine seemed insane by the end. This is a feature, not a bug. Between the very graphic war crimes and what we learn of the human relationship to the gods it's amazing anyone is still remotely functional by the end.- You get to the end and it's like...wow. This can't end well. I consider this a plus.Weak points:- Did feel like the first book could have been condensed. The primary conflict didn't come into play until 40% of the way through, after which the military portion kicked in and carried it through to the end. (Oddly you could conceivably start with Book 2, since it even included its own prologue.)- The style may be hit-or-miss for some. It lacks the stuffy tone of Tolkien-esque Epic Fantasy, which I appreciate, but occasionally veers into Quippy Territory. Depending on your preference this may be a pro or a con.- Very particular point: May read a little weird if you're a Japanese-American. This is influenced by real atrocities committed during the Sino-Japanese War, so if you're not willing to think about that ugly bit of history just skip it entirely, but oddly what bothered me more was that the Japanese proxy race were described in the same generalized terms of hive-minded fanatical hordes that were used to describe Japanese-Americans during World War II. There's a touch at the very end that indicates the culture isn't uniform evil, but we never seen anything to challenge their depiction as anything but sadistic monsters. There are also some textual reasons to present them as one-dimensional, and it may be challenged in the second book. Obviously this didn't keep me from enjoying the book, and it may not bother others at all, but if you do happen to have this background and just wanted to settle down and enjoy some Asian-inspired SFF do not be thrown. All in all, a little bumpy but intriguing enough that I'll be checking out the sequel.

I finished the book several days ago and I'm still disturbed by it. Although the protagonist is a young woman, this is not a YA book. The first two thirds of the book lure you in and make you invested with the characters. Rin Fang is a war orphan in the Nikan empire, whom the state has placed with an abusive family. Faced with the prospect of an unpleasant marriage, she becomes determined to take the civil service exam and earn a place in a service academy. She sets her sights on the most exclusive one because it's free for those who earn a place. She studies obsessively, burning herself with candle wax to stay awake, and wins through. At the highly stratified academy, she's an outcast because she's a dark-skinned peasant with no connections, having only one friend. This part of the book covers her education and development as a student, and it's leavened with bright sparks of humor. The setting is derived from China in the first half of the 20th century, mostly, and a pantheon is described as well, the nature of religious belief and the gods are important.. There are enough changes to the setting that it isn't a direct copy. World-building is limited in the sense that it's already familiar, it's not extensively original. This is not a criticism; the author's skill is such that it all feels fresh and the characters are vivid; it's easy to get on Rin's side. The characters aren't idealized or almost perfect with a few small flaws; they're allowed to be well rounded with good and bad traits. There isn't much character development, but that also makes sense since the students are being indoctrinated into a certain mindset and their concentration is on their studies. The last third of the book is... harrowing. If this is the first of three books, I'm not quite sure that I can take the remaining two. This third of the book focuses on the invasion by the Mugen Federation, the analog of Japan, similar to Japan's predation before and during WWII. Three specific atrocities have been adapted for this story: the comfort women, Lab 731, and the rape of Nanjing. The book is dedicated to "Iris," who I take to be Iris Chang, the author of a history of the atrocities in Nanjing. I've read that book and after reading this book, I can say truthfully that for me the fictionalized account is more disturbing because of the way the characters respond. The writing is so vivid and haunting that it's almost like you're there with Rin and her cohorts. You're with them as they come across the atrocities. It's not enough that the city's inhabitants were killed, it's the creativity displayed that will turn your stomach. The violence is present and brutal, but it's not gratuitous. And you see how soldiers respond to exposure to these sights. While these horrors are awful enough, it's the unraveling of our characters who are confronted with them and what they do that is heartbreaking. What happens to Rin is believable because it's a logical outcome from what she's experienced and endured and the power she can command.. Possible spoiler: Her revenge is catastrophic and you could draw a parallel with the atomic bombings too, just even more devastating. This is an extraordinary book, but at the same time I can't say that I'm glad I read it because the depiction of war is so heavy-hitting and brutal. It is definitely worth the read, but be warned; this isn't a book you can finish and set aside, forgettable.

The reality is, no review I write can come close to capturing the sheer experience of reading The Poppy War. It is dark, brutal, and oftentimes, presents moments that will make your heart ache and your core hollow. If you are looking for a light-hearted beach read, this is not the book for you. However, if you want a story that can give you a taste of the pain of warfare, and introduce you to characters that will haunt the depths of your mind for years to come, you need this book on your shelf.
