Pros:- One of the most interesting military novels I've read in years- great action scenes and plot, up until the ending- see below- Well-developed characters- Very good writing style, with only a few minor editing errorsCons:- Some of the military jargon was over the top and acronyms not explained- PC inclusions added nothing to the story- it was as if the author felt he needed to check a few liberal blocks:- One of the main characters turns out to be gay and one of the female is either Lesbian/Bi/ or Questioning. He got four of the 5 LGBQT blocks checked, but their sexual orientation had absolutely nothing to do with the story line in any way.- Climate Change/Global Warming. Minor spoiler: it was all about Russia running out of water in the near future due to CC/GW. We are to believe that all the lakes, rivers, and snow in Russia will no longer exist in the near future. Really?- Spoiler: The contrived ending that convinced a Russian General who was winning the war to call off the war because of one small child after a cell phone conversation with the embattled U.S. ambassador to Russia. Ridiculous.

FX Holden is a find. The intelligence required to keep the reader buried in all the military lingo, technology, thinking, culture, geo politics, and personalities to such an unrelenting degree is humbling. This book achieves all that while still being an action thriller. Quite a feat. At the end of the book, he informs the reader that the inspiration for the book is "Dawn Attack" by Brian Callison. Sounds like something worth looking into if you like this book. I checked into his other works (experiments) on Goodreads. A Sci-fi book and a cop story. I'm reading them both. The cop story is funny so beware, humor is a subjective thing. What has me laughing out loud might leave you cold. The Sci-fi story starts off with a straight forward death of an alien. I'm still reading. Both seem interesting. Very talented guy.

It is extremely rare for me to read a book of fiction written by a woman; call it sexist if you wish, but that's just the way it is (I don't think for a moment I'm the only guy who feels this way). This book is an admirable exception. It held my interest from beginning to end with clever and very well written scenes right through to the final one.

Beautifully paced and edge of your seat exciting. You don't need to be a technology whizz to enjoy this cleverly plotted and brilliantly executed story. The characters are complex, believable, likable (even the bad guys) and well developed as the story progresses. I confess to skipping some of the technical descriptions of the various aircraft and weaponry but the story holds it own and then some. I hope FX Holden is busy writing the next book. I hate waiting. Highly recommended.

This is not my normal go to topic. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters. The military aspect was interesting and the action was good. I kind of glazed over some of the areas discussing military rank and procedure. If you like this style of book than it is well worth the time reading Bering Strait.

This is probably the best book I have read in several years.The author has made a very informed, very convincing future extrapolation of present day weaponry in 2035, and wrapped it into a chilling realistic war plot between the U S and Russia with no punches pulled.Excellent characterizations, excellent plot development, excellent dialogue.Six stars!

Holden crafted an excellent story with great action and even has developed good characters and shows a solid grasp of current and projected relations between us, USA, and the Evil Empire currently run by that terrorist dictator Putin. Holden presented aircraft and avionics and Electronic Warfare technology in an exce.optional way. Holden has written a story that deserves to be a movie. Of course I am one who gravitatess to stories where Russia is an enemy after all my family has fought the Russian monsters for generations. Looking forward to Holden's next book.

This is a very interesting story of a situation that might occur in the future. It is told in a wonderful style giving the story from both sides. It also combines very different perspectives from different type of military personnel. It is a truly gripping story that will leave you think "What if?". Very well written.

The life expectancy of members of most minority groups in the United States is shorter than it is for white Americans. For example, the gap in life expectancy between black Americans and white Americans is about six years. Against this bleak backdrop, a group of scholars assembled by the Institute of Medicine has taken on the issue of racial disparities in health care. In Unequal Treatment, they deal with several questions. In the United States, are there disparities in treatment between patients who are members of minority groups and those who are not, when both groups have similar access to care? If so, can we determine what underlies these disparities and what we should do about them? The medical literature reviewed in this book should convince even skeptics that members of minority groups receive treatment for their health problems that is different from the treatment received by others. However, determining whether these differences exist when all patients have equal access to care is a thornier issue. Two approaches are commonly used to analyze this problem: one is to examine the treatment of patients at a single location; the other is to investigate the treatment of patients who have the same insurance. Unfortunately, both of these experimental designs fall short of the ideal condition, in which all patients have equal access to the same range of services and expertise. As a result, no one can be certain whether disparities in treatment reflect unequal treatment of two groups of patients with equal access to health care or unequal treatment of two groups owing to a difference in resources, such as the availability of subspecialists and well-stocked pharmacies. After careful consideration of the evidence, the editors favor the former explanation: unequal treatment despite equal access. They ground this view in well-described and engaging theories about the roles of race, nonverbal communication, and inferential thinking that invisibly alter the clinical encounter between a patient who is a member of a minority group and a physician who is not. They conclude that "stereotyping, biases, and uncertainty on the part of the healthcare providers can all contribute to unequal treatment." This conclusion is important and remarkable, in that it redefines the problem of disparities in health care as a problem not of uneven access but of moral failure. In this context, the editors' recommendations make sense. Poor treatment of minorities should be considered an abrogation of civil rights. Doctors' understanding of their minority patients should be enhanced through educational programs on disparities in treatment and on cultural competency. The medical profession's myopia regarding minority issues should be addressed by enriching the physician workforce with more members of minority groups. I believe, however, that if we focus our attention on eliminating racial disparities, we will fall short of our aspirations. Decades of research have shown that the care received by patients who do not belong to a minority group is also frequently of poor quality, meaning that by aiming for parity we aim too low. An alternative is to focus purely on maximizing the quality of care received by underserved populations. Our success in this endeavor would be reflected within these communities, rather than measured by comparison with other populations. We could provide additional reimbursement to physicians who treat underserved patients, rather than threaten them with charges of civil-rights violations. In England, the National Health Service has experimented successfully with a deprivation payment system. According to this system, general practitioners who work in underprivileged areas of the country receive additional reimbursement for the care they provide, in part on the premise that the barriers to providing optimal care are greater in such areas. We could also target the specific conditions that most impair health and economic viability in minority communities. Currently, childhood asthma is rampant in inner cities and has severe economic consequences for affected families: every exacerbation requires both the child and the caregiver to stay at home, thus impeding the child's educational success and the adult caregiver's professional success. Harlem Hospital, in New York City, has engaged in intensive community outreach that has mitigated the burden imposed by this condition. If our aim is to follow Harlem Hospital's lead on a larger scale, it will be better served by educating doctors about the strong relation between poverty and environment than by educating them about the relatively weak relation between skin color and treatment preferences. A good read on some of the many problems we have in the US health system with strategies to improve.I enjoyed reading it.

Most of the information in this book is available online. I bought it because it was required for a college course, then I never even opened it.

This is a really important national study of health disparities in the US - mainly health disparities between African Americans and Caucasians (but other ethnic groups are occasionally mentioned). It shows that African Americans experience higher rates of certain medical conditions than other ethnic groups (e.g. diabetes), but also identifies clinical and practical barriers and forms of discrimination which result in inferior treatment. Importantly, it does not address inequalities which stem from discrepancies in insurance coverage -- this is a major limitation, I think.A word of warning - this is published by the National Institutes of Medicine, so it is incredibly academic - there is a comprehensive, but somewhat excessive, literature review of some topics that lasts 126 pages. Useful for public health/epidemiology students (particularly grad students), but not for the general reader.Although there is an Executive Summary at the beginning, it is also written in a very academic, rather than accessible, tone. So I would suggest the intended audience is really public health/epidemiology professionals.

Recognize this book is over ten years old - provides a historical account of interest to those in health policy or public health. The material is over 10 years old at this point the statistics are dated. A classic read and sadly, the disparities still exist.

I have been fortunate enough to have had a few encounters with ECK Masters myself in the physical over the years. These are experiences you never forget.This book is full of such stories. The stories are amazing, touching and uplifting.The appearance of one of these Saints in your life is always a blessing and often miraculous in its timing and purpose.This book brings home the reality of these experiences. It makes you look back on your own life to recall meetings with strangers that you may examine in a whole new light.It also shines a positive light on the path of ECKANKAR. Anyone curious about this unique religion would be well served by reading this worthwhile book.

This is a wonderful book that introduces the seeker of God to the spiritual giants who are ECK Masters. The author, Harold Klemp, choose to mention only a few and to give examples of those who seek Truth and God. Those ECK Masters that are mentioned are known to many who have had experiences with them regardless of faith. There are many more than are in the book. But,I consider this book to be an introduction to the ECK Masters NOT a comprehensive book of all the ECK Masters. It's a wonderful book as an introduction to the ECK Masters and to the Eckankar religion. I highly recommend it.

I've worked with these masters for many years. They are real. My life changed dramatically when I discovered the Eck Masters via "The Spiritual Notebook" by Paul Twitchell. They are indeed WONDERFUL, beyond words, for the deep love, healing, insight about past lives, and protection that came to me as a result of working with them.

Wow, I love it. Combined with the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad, you have a complete source of the ECK Masters that are available to assist you with Soul Travel and exploring all of the planes of existence. The ECK Masters can personally help each of us return to God and become Co-Workers with God. Wonderful stories of the Master's lives and examples of their assistance with everyday problems of life on the physical plane.

I have this on my Kindle, which I love. Each evening at bedtime, I listen to one of the ECK Master stories and practice the exercise to meet with them. The result is a richer dream life and a greater awareness of the help, guidance, and protection that surrounds me every moment of my life.

We were very much looking forward to add this to our Olivia library - but are quite disappointed.This book offers poor choices for counting and A LOT of the drawings are taken from other Olivia books. Besides a great cover, there is hardly new content in here (only the 4 aunts and 8 cousins). The re-use of images feels random and it misses all the wit other Olivia books have.Here are the things to count:1 - Ball (image taken from "Olivia" - when Olivia is on the Beach.)2 - Bows3 - Cans of paint (showing the cans from "Olivia" - when Olivia paints the wall.)4 - Aunts5 - Books (image from "Olivia" - when Olivia wants to read 5 books for bedtime.)6 - Teeth (image from "Olivia" - when Olivia scares Ian away, wearing a paper bag with a scary face)7 - Accessories ???!! (to me a shirt is really a piece of clothing and not an accessory..)it feels like "7 random items"8 - cousins9 - toys (there are multiple balls in here, plus a baseball and bat.. which counts as two items.. )10 - Olivia's (also images from "Olivia")We love Olivia but this book really disappoints and it seems like the publisher is just "milking the cash-cow".I would skip this book. Unless you like to hear your toddler try to read out the word "accessories".

A perfectly adorable book for those tiny little ones we love so much. The thickness of the board book makes them more durable, but it introduces young children to the ways of handing a book properly. This book is great for learning numbers, words, and amounts to 10.

Also for the great granddaughter.

Disappointing--no plot, no story, just illustrations with number. It isn't what I thought I would be getting, which, I guess, is my own fault. I love the other Olivia books and when I saw this, I bought it without checking it out first. I won't make that mistake again!

This book is just a compilation of pictures lifted from the other better Olivia books. It doesn't really tell a story or make the counting fun or interesting in any way. It misses the spirit of Olivia and seems like a half hearted cash grab, a definite low point on the Olivia franchise. You can have more fun counting things in the other Olivia books while reading a story.

Grandchild's mother suggested this title. It has cute Olivia illustrations by the author and it may help the child develop understanding of quantities.

This was the perfect book for my little granddaughter who just turned one! Since it's a board book, the pages are easy to turn. So when her mom handed it to her she sat there in the chair looking at it, and turning the pages, by herself! It was so cute! It is a simple counting book - 1 Olivia, 2 Olivias, 3 Olivias, etc. - they're all doing something different. It's very cute and this was a great price for this book!

If you like the Olivia series of books and you are looking for some fun pictures for the kids to learn counting, this is a good one.It's short and sweet. I would prefer to have bought it used. The original Olivia book is the best one, simply entitled "Olivia".

This is a very nice hard-cover book that measures 10 1/4" high, 8 1/2" wide, and 1" thick. Table of Contents has lists for Classics, Fish, Meats, Spices, Cooking in Advance, Cooking for One or Two, Cooking for Friends, Baking, and Basic Skills, and also contains an Index. Lots of huge color pictures with a total of 320 pages of fantastic information on Ramsay's excellent food. I gave this to my sister for her birthday and she was more than ecstatic......made me look good!! Highly recommended.

I own the more famous Salt Fat Acid Heat (more famous in the cookbook world, that is) and then this cookbook by Gordon Ramsay. Ramsey's book is superior, and I have worked through both books. His recipes are simple yet elegant. He elevates everyday ingredients. Please excuse any typos as this is voice to text. Gordon's recipes and techniques are accessible. The ingredients that he asks you to have in your pantry, you should already have if you are a home cook.I am of course referring to:Salt and PepperCumin,Turmeric,Garam Masala,CorianderGingerGarlicOlive OilRice VingegarBalsamic VinegarBasics like lentils, flour, olive oilThese spices are used fairly commonly now whereas perhaps in the 90's they were not. In fact, those are pretty basic spices for today's home cook. H Ramsay's recipes are simply classy. He can elevate even something as simple as green beans. And believe it or not, with this book you will actually be superior to many chefs at restaurants. Prepare to feel better about yourself, prepare to feel classy. And to save a ton of money. This book will make you feel great, but you really need to take your time with it and read the recipe slowly and read his suggestions and the introductions to the chapter slowly. I would recommend a slow work through of the book for 3 months, followed by daily reference use of the book for a year to get its full benefit.

I'd like to mention that the ULTIMATE COOKERY COURSE and HOME COOKING books from Gordon Ramsay are almost the same book! The second book is in fact an adaptation for the US market.This review is in fact NOT a review or an evaluation of the books. It's only showing the numerous but minor differences between them:- the first book is the original book published for the UK market (august 2012), the other is an adpatation for the US (april 2013)- their covers are slightly different but images, texts, page layout, recipes are EXACTLY identical. There is even a matching page to page- the original uses metric measures (grams, millilitres, cm), the adaptation uses imperial measures (cups, ounces, pounds, inches). Both use tsp and tbsp for small quantities- the original uses °Centigrade with gas level, the other °Fahrenheit: 200°C/Gas 6 becomes 400°F- some ingredients are named/translated differently: double cream becomes heavy cream, caster sugar becomes sugar, spring onions become scallions, pak choi becomes bok choy, coriander becomes cilantro, kale becomes swiss chard, plain flour becomes all-purpose flour, fillet of beef becomes beef tenderloin, tenderstem broccoli becomes baby broccoli, chillies becomes chiles, cep mushrooms become porcini, demerara sugar becomes brown sugar, courgette becomes zucchini, cornflour becomes cornstarch, icing sugar becomes confectioner's sugar, bicarbonate of soda becomes baking soda, biscuits becomes cookies, pudding rice becomes short-grain white rice, etc.- material is named/translated differently: roasting tray becomes roasting pan, cling film becomes plastic film, hob becomes stovetop, fish slice becomes fish spatula, square tin lined becomes square pan lined, proof paper becomes wax paper, tins become cans, muslin becomes cheese cloth, heavy-based pan becomes heavy-bottomed pan, griddle pan becomes grill pan, grill becomes broiler, etc.- techniques are named/translated differently: fry becomes sauté, etc.- also: flavoursome becomes flavorful, navarin of lamb becomes lamb stew, Arabic restaurants becomes middle Eastern restaurants, scum becomes foam, popular fish becomes overfish fish, etc.- the converted quantities in the adaptation are approximative and not always well rounded: 400g asparagus becomes 1 lb, 50 mL sherry vinegar in a vinaigrette becomes 1/4 cup, and probably most conversions of ingredients in metric measurements to cups, etc.- the adaptation brings sometimes nice but little corrections in the codification of the recipes- the adaptation has more entries in its index- etc.If you ask me which version I prefer ? The pictures of the food look beautiful and hopefully I can make mine look half as well. I plan to buy his other books and have them all for reference. It's great for new beginners also.

Got this book as I wanted to expand my cooking skills and get some new dishes into my repertoire, and it certainly did the trick. I'm now eating a lot more exciting food everyday, and I've saved a lot of money doing it. A lot of the essential cooking techniques are described in great detail as well. The portion sizes are mostly pretty accurate too.

I enjoyed this a lot. I can't wait to try another book. I was a bit worried- my skill level is that of a five-year-old- but even I could cook the recipes. My daughter and I like to cook together, and she is a huge fan of Master Chef JR so this was a perfect activity for us.

Measurements are completely off by a long shot. Also, not in Gordon Ramsay’s words meaning someone else wrote it or else the recipes would not have so many mistakes. Also, even after following the recipes to a T and having to change the improper measurement conversions, the end results don’t taste anything like a recipe you would expect to come from Gordon Ramsay. It all tastes good but definitely no wow factor whatsoever. Sad because I had such high hopes for something coming from Gordon Ramsay.

Very informative book with several interesting, challenging, rewarding, and tasty recipes that will last you for years. There's not a single bad recipe in this book as far as I've made yet. All recipes mostly use common household goods and appliances. Furthermore, some of these recipes are on his YouTube channel, so you can get a quick look at the steps needed if you're more of a visual learner.
